The service was terrible!
It was a slow Saturday night because of the weather. My girls and I thought it would be a great opportunity to go to open sesame to avoid the long wait. This place dose not do reservations!

Nice place delicious food and the people are really friendly. Prices are good, for the kind of food. If you have not been there you are missing big.

The only word that i can think of for this amazing. It will be the best food u have ever tasted in ur entire life. Service is great. My only complaint is that the place itself is somewhat limited on space. Other than that go eat there now."

This place was recommended to me a few years ago by some friends that said it was a great place to eat on 2nd St. Since it's a 5 min walk from my home, I decided to see what the hype was all about. I left there disappointed. I gave it a try a few months later and the same. It is the most mediocre place in Belmont Shore. When it's busy there, everyone blocks the sidewalk and you have to almost shove people out of the way to get by. Plus the manager walks around like he's a big shot which shows that he's really an a--hole. And to top it off, they opened up another one down the street where the Steakorama used to be (R.I.P.). Great. Two restaurants that serve the same boring and over-rated garbage.

Pros: none

Cons: where should I start?

The place comes off as classy, even expensive... But if you know what to get-- you will surely get full without paying for full price.

Plates are huge!!! So try ordering sides and appetizers as part of a meal... We often get the fried potatoes (best seller!) and hummus (with their unlimited supply of pita bread)-- is a meal by itself. Order sandwiches or shawarmas instead of a whole plate... You'll save almost half, while still satisfying your hunger.

They also offer HALAL meat for our Muslim brothers and sisters.

Great spot!

Just look at all of the other ratings... this place is great. If you never had or just love middle eastern cuisine, this is the place to go. If you are new to middle eastern cuisine, then get the chicken tawook plate. If you know what you like, then go for it... you will not be disappointed. They are so popular, they had to open a take out location down the street to move the traffic away from their front door. THEY ARE THAT GOOD!!! Oh, make sure that you get extra "garlic sauce". It is heavenly!!!

What great find! If you like mediterrain food this is the place to go. We sat at the counter and watched as all the food was being prepared. Everything looked great. The service is fabulous. We asked so many questions re. the dishes before we ordered. Our server took time with us and made great recommendations. The is very small. I would not recommend this for a large party.

The food is delicious and reasonably priced. I can't get enough of their garlic sauce and pickles! The place is always busy, and parking on 2nd Street can be tough at peak times.

The food was great. From the Spicy Hummas to the Shredded Zucchini to the Arayes. I loved it all. Although I thought it was more Greek than Lebanese, I would definitely go back. The restaurant is very small and cramped, and the wait long. But the servers are nice and knowledgable about the menu selections, and you can stroll around the shops until your buzzer goes off to alert you that you'll be seated momentarily.

I went to Open Sesame last night (on a Wednesday) and it was about a 20 minute wait...not too bad. We just occupied ourselves with the window shopping on 2nd Street. I had been here once before and my 2nd visit was just as enjoyable. I tried the fried potatoes for the 1st time and they were FANTASTIC! Mixed with garlic, cilantro and lemon....such a great flavor...I could have eaten a whole plate of just those. I got the CHICKEN SHAWARMA PLATE which I didn't enjoy as much to be honest. I would recommend going with the CHICKEN TAWOOK PLATE which was much more flavorful and appetizing.

I will continue coming back here again and again!!

We were a party of three once again but remembered from our last visit the terrible experience we had, so we told the staff there were 4 of us. They told us the wait would be 45 minutes. So we were expecting about an hour wait. We were apprehensive but decided to wait anyways. We headed up the street to window shop and low and behold, the beeper went off! It had only been 20 minutes! We were pleasantly surprised considering our hunger was like a bear that had been in hibernation too long. We were seated at the center table that could have seated 6. We felt bad so we told the staff that our "fourth" would not be arriving. So we offered to move to another open table. They were thankful and we were happy that we were seated! Finally! The service is not up to par, but since the food is so amazing, this place keeps me coming back for more. What is their secret ingredient? Heroin?! Nevertheless, the chicken is flavorful, the rice is fabulous, and dont even get me started on the hummus. To Die For. Literally. Yum. Delicious. Excellent. What more can I say? One must have a sense of humor, lots of patience, positive attitude, and perhaps even a bit of the Secret ingredients. The Law of Attraction responds to whatever vibration you are sending by giving you more of it, whether its positive or negative. It simply responds to your vibration. So you if you go there with a positive attitude, you will no doubt have a magnificent experience. Cheers!

First of all, I am not from Long Beach. I was visiting SoCal a couple of months ago when the friend I was visiting decided to take me to this restaurant. (She was actually going to take me to another mediterranean restaurant right across the street but they were not open yet even though it was a few minutes past their opening time.) I liked it. Food was good and cheap. I had the kafta plate and I enjoyed it. It was so much though that I could barely finish but I did, since it was delicious.
Atmosphere was nice. Service was kind of slow, our waitress took forever to give us our check even though it wasn't that busy. Still I would recommend this place.
BTW, I really like Long Beach. It was one of the few places in SoCal where you would actually walk around and not have to take a car.

I recently had the pleasure of dining as this delightful restaurant on 2nd street and wow what a great evening we had. The food is fantastic, authentic, delicious and very, very affordable. The decor was beautiful and unique. There was a really nice vibe about the place...good music, atmosphere and happy looking people. Our server was very professional and friendly. To the owners of Open Sesame...Bravo...I can't wait to come back to dine at your restaurant!

Our group of 3 arrived at the restaurant on a weekday night and were told the wait would only be about 20 minutes. We got our "beeper" and headed across the street to the bank. Then popped into a little shop nearby. About 20 minutes had passed and we went to see if we could get seated. There were even more people waiting at this point. We waited, and waited, and waited. At this point we were waiting for 50 minutes. We noticed that a party of 4 that arrived AFTER us were seated BEFORE us.
Now were were upset. So my very diplomatic friend went to talk to the hostess, who was not very helpful or sympathetic. So he called for the manager. The manager explained to us that it was easier for them to seat a party of 4 before a party of 3 because they party of 4 would have been waiting longer. He ignored the fact that we arrived much earlier than this party of 4 that were seated. The manager said that he was waiting to seat us at the table of three in the corner but there was a couple sitting there that had just begun their meal.
By this time we had wasted one hour and never got seated. We left and went to a fantastic Greek restaurant up the street. When Open Sesame's competition opens up across the street in a few weeks, we will definitely be going there instead of here. Too bad because I heard the food is good. They need to reevaluate how they treat their customers because I am not coming back and I will tell all my friends about my experience with their rude behavior.

THIS WAS MY ORIGINAL REVIEW BACK IN 2006:
"I have visited this place numerous times over the years at the urging of my friends. Unfortunately, and probably due to the carlessness and greed of the owner(s), the quality has diminished. The food there does not taste authentic. The shawarma is too oily and overcooked. More importantly, they use Soybean and other cheap oils on all of their foods INSTEAD of Olive oil.

Moreover, they deceptively state that they use Olive oil on their menu (see references to olive oil and "natural ingredients"). I confirmed that this was not the case by asking the waitress. She came back after consulting the chefs and told me that they do use soybean oil in all of their food including the tabbouleh salad!!! Ridiculous. This restaurant disgraces lebanese food. I would not recommend this restaurant."

THIS IS MY CURRENT REVIEW IN 2008:
Since my initial writing, it seems that the owner has made some improvements with the food quality. As a result, we are currently pleased with the food they offer and have returned on a few ocassions. I have personally tried almost all of their dishes and prefer the Chicken Tawook plate and the Kafta Plate.

I went here on my birthday because of the great reviews and was sorely disappointed. We had reservations but were seated right next to the door on a cold day. The hostess kept holding the door open making us freeze. The Beef and Chicken Shawarma were overcooked, dry, and flavorless. The beef kabobs were a little better, but still disappointing. The only good food was the rice. Service was ok.

I used to be a big fan of Open Sesame, but haven't been lately because the service and food has steadily declined. The food just hasn't been as a good, and lately the service has been terrible. The last time a friend and I went for lunch we were the only diners on the patio; the server rarely came around, and when we wanted service I had to go inside the restaurant to track someone down to help us. As it got a little busier, we were specifically told that we couldn't bring our (quiet!) dog anymore because it was turning customers away (even though the restaurant was still only half full). 2nd St is very dog friendly, but not Open Sesame, even outdoors on the patio.

Open Sesame has great food, it's that simple. I've ordered many different items off of their menu and have never been disappointed. The would have received five stars if I was reviewing only food but I must admit that when they get really busy their customer service goes right down the drain. I can understand issues popping up but a few times it was so bad my party and I left and walked to another restaurant... which was disappointing because we love the food. Try to get there at an 'off time' or an 'off night'.

Open Sesame has to be one of my favorite restaurants on Second Street in Long Beach. Everything on the menu is simple, tasty and served in large portions. My favorite items on the menu are Zatar (Lebanese pizza) and hummus. The hummus is the best that I have ever tasted, as it is fresh and moist. I sometimes go there for pita and hummus.
The meat dishes are nice however the chicken shwarma is a bit too salty for my taste. I think that since the chicken is so salty that it would be better served on a bed of greens without a dressing.
The staff is always young and some forget what is going on but overall, they are pleasant and willing to please. The kitchen is open and clean. The restroom is clean as well however with the two restaurants being side by side, they need yet another stall.

The management has been improving the food quality recently. I must say that their shawarma is fantastic, and has become sort of a standard for other restaurants to emulate. Very highly recommended. Great lebanese food.

This food is very exotic and full of rich flavor. I have been there a few times and always leave very satisfied and full. I usually get the chicken skewers over a bed of rice and a side of the potatoes, also to drink I'll get a Jalab. Its delicious. The only set back is that this restaurant is as big as my kitchen and you have to walk through the cooks area to get to the restroom. If your looking to break from your typical mundane bland food try this place, it'll send your tastebuds into a whirl!

The food is here is incredible, though the quality is inconsistent during lunch. Dinners have always been excellent, in terms of food quality. The open sesame combo plate is a bargain for the heap of food given. The side of potatoes is to die for, as is the labne (yogurt dip). Also, they serve THE best hummus in America, with a drizzle of fragrant olive oil (which, I believe is the traditional way)! The only drawback is the crowded seating and the slow service. There have been several occasions when we've just not gotten some side dishes we've ordered. However, this place is a gem, and I won't stop going back.

Went there last night with a friend. She had heard from a co-worker about this place. The food was great! It's *very* reasonably priced, esp for the quality of the food. I had the Kafta plate and it was perfect. We're going back. :D

Went there last night with a friend. She had heard from a co-worker about this place. The food was great! It's *very* reasonably priced, esp for the quality of the food. I had the Kafta plate and it was perfect. We're going back. :D

Pros: Great Food, Small and Intimate

.

I've been to Open Sesame only once, but I'm still reeling from the experience!! The food is simply unforgettable! I had the beef kabobs with a side of cucumber yogurt. The presentation of the food was an added bonus, it looked just as great as it tasted! My best friend had the chicken shawarma and she STILL raves about it being the best anywhere! Her sister had the baklava for dessert! What a tastly, flaky treat! The staff are friendly and the decor was ethic and colorful. GO TO OPEN SESAME!!!
