I have been visiting noshi for the past 20 years,
but since 6 months ago I have noticed their quality of fish has gotten worse. during my last visit, My wife and I sat at the bar and we noticed that our susuiman( itamae) was serving us differently from the caucasian customer sitting next to us. we were getting worse sections of the fish, some pieces actually had
bad fish smell but the caucasian customer was complimenting the sushiman for the wonderful pieces
he was getting. no illusion here.
after this bad experience, we have decided not to return
to this restaurant anymore. sorry.

Why isn't there a zero stars option?

Once upon a time, Noshi was a fair option for low-cost sushi. Which, if you know anything about sushi, you know is virtually an oxymoron. If you're the kind of person who goes to all-you-can-eat sushi night, stop reading, as you'll eat anything anyway.

A friend dragged me back to Noshi last night, after a few years away. Long and short is this: when we ordered uni (sea urchin -- which when good, is probably the tastiest thing you can order), it was disintegrating. As in, I've had good uni (intense color, firm) and bad uni (stinky, wet), but I've never been served disgustingly runny, falling apart, crazily stinky, gotta be over a week old uni. You know, the kind that is fatal.

Which is bad enough. But even worse, when I complained to the chef, he tried to feed me some load of BS about how I was wrong, trying to cover up. He should have looked at it and apologized. I'm not wrong, a-hole. I know my o-toro from my chu-toro, and I know uni, and that uni wouldn't be fed to dogs. No, just possibly unsuspecting customers to maximize profit.

Let me take this moment to point out that I'm not the guy who waves his finger, or demands much of anything out of waiters or sushi chefs, and virtually always tips over 20%, often more. I NEVER post on these forums, but I genuinely believe as a service to public health that I had to.

If you know anything about sushi, IGNORE any of the positive posts you see here. I'm sorry, but you're better off with a Big Mac. At least it won't be fatal.

The service is hitt or miss...mainly miss. It's cash only...Hello IRS!!! They constantly ignore you and could care less if you like the food or not. They asked us if everything was ok? We said the Ikura was fishy. Their response? Oh, ok. Here's the bill. Didn't remove the item or ask if we wanted a replacement. It's been downhill for the past few years. Now it's near the bottom...won't be going back. Better places in Korea town.
And you better speak Japanese if you want to read the bill, otherwise put your trust in the couldn't care less staff.

Noshi is the place we go to when we don't want to take a risk and don't want to spend a lot. It's sushi is a 5/6 on a scale to 10. Like the natto rolls and dynamite too! Service is adequate. Good for kids. If you want the best sush and are ready to pay for it go to Maru in Valencia

Noshi has been our favorite Sushi bar since we first placed taste buds on it. Nowhere compares. Noshi serves the freshest fish and largest cuts -- no gargantuan masses of rice attached! Disclaimer: Noshi is for serious sushi eaters. If you are looking for fancy shmancy rolls or a trendy setting, you may want to consider going somewhere else.

We have been eating at Noshi for over 12 years. No frills and damned good fish that is always fresh because Mr. Noshi buys it himself. The staff have been there for a long time and they're always accommodating. It's cash only and there's no dessert menu but go have dessert somewhere else. Come to eat and marvel at the consistently good fish you'll get at this place. There's a long line during lunch and dinner but worth the wait. Try going in between these busy times and sit at the bar...do not expect to see fancy fusion rolls with 5-6 ingredients dripping in sauce that you don't know what you're tasting...just expect good straight forward sushi.

Cons: Bit of a wait during rush dining times

If you've ever wondered how decent sushi is supposed to taste like then go to Noshi Sushi. This is one of the only no-gimmick sushi places I know in Southern California. They serve sushi how it's served in Japan with a simple menu with simple dishes. You won't find Rainbow Rolls, Manhattan Beach Rolls, or other multicolored American born sushi here! The prices are CRAZY LOW too. The most expensive item on the menu is $10. We ordered three full sized dishes, a couple beers, and a few assorted nigiri and the bill barely broke $40. This place is awesome. The $3 Asahi is awesome!

Take it from a Japanese guy that has a very spoiled tongue.
The sushi isn't the best at Noshi Sushi but for the price nobody else comes close.

Have been coming year since the early 90's. Ambience-wise, it looks kind of like a converted coffee shop, but who cares? The sushi is always good and the price is very reasonable. Don't expect any creative rolls. Everything is pretty basic here, which is fine by me. I love the albacore salad and the spicy tuna is the best in town! Be forewarned - it's cash only, they stop serving at 9 pm and they don't take reservations.

I've been coming to this place for over 10 years. At least once a week. Lately, the sushi tasted fishy and the texture felt thawed. I thought that it was only a fluke so I came back 3-5 more times and it was consistently BADDDDDD!!! What happened? I'm very disappointed. I USED TO LOVE THIS PLACE!!! It's too bad, because everyone is so friendly. The price is pretty good. You get FREE miso soup & hot green tea.

My rating is F - (minus)...sorry Noshi

I'd visited here a couple of times recently and the fish were not that fresh. The "hamachi nigiri" tasted like it was a little cooked or left out for a while and it was kind of dry, then it daunted on me that it was due to a 'thawing' process; in other words, the sushi were not fresh and had came out from the freezer. This has happened twice in a 2 months period, maybe just my luck? I always liked Noshi and have been "paying their rent" here for over 10 years and felt quite guilty by reporting this. But being said, after all these years; I am the one who's spending the bucks here. *Probably* will return less often.

Well, reading most of the recommendations here I decided to try the sushi. LOVED IT! I'm soo tired of all these creative rolls out there... what ever happened to good ol' plain sushi. Well I found that here! The food was great, I would recommend the albacore tuna salad... not on the menu but I think they can make it. They made it for me... and it was soo good.. I mean I've never had this before anywhere else. The fish was great if you like dynamite.. they have killer dynamite as well as spicy tuna rolls.
I really don't go to a restaurant for its decor.. I'm sorry for those that do.. I actually go for the food and that's it. So if you're looking for good old fashion sushi/sashimi.. then this place is it. Be warned though: CASH ONLY.

this hidden gem, tucked away in an unassuming brown building on beverly and hobart, has a very devoted fan base...for good reason!! the fish is always fresh and MELTS in your mouth--particularly the albacore tuna and halibut. their rolls are huge and jampacked with the good stuff (not just rice). my favorites are the spicy tuna and yellowtail rolls. the no-frills ambience is very casual and comfortable, and all focus is on the food, food, food. another great surprise comes at the end of the meal, when you reach for the bill as you pat your satisfied belly and do a double-take-- $25 total for 2 ppl, for all that sushi AND more than just a few sake bombs!! take your friends/loved ones here, they'll thank you.

This is my favorite sushi place in LA. The fish is always fresh and the portions are always huge. You get even more if you sit at the bar. For people who say there is a limited menu or little selection, you can order off the menu all the time. Someone who reviewed Noshi earlier had it all wrong. There isn't a 3 role limit per person, there is a 3 roll minimum if you sit at the bar. This place isn't about ambience, it's about excellent sushi at excellent prices.

Tasteless miso soup (it's free tho), average tempura, Mexican restaurant decor. with Japanese posters, limited variety of sushi. Those were the bad things about Noshi Sushi. However, if you desire fresh fish at reasonable prices, this is a good place to go. It's a good sushi place for the budgeted minds.

I was specifically looking for a good sushi bar in L.A. that was open during the day on Sunday. After reviewing quite a number of restaurants on City Search, and reading the reviews tried Noshi Sushi. And every previous review was right on. The portions were very generous; and the prices were very reasonable. A friend and I ordered drinks; appetizer; a combo sushi plate and a variety of sushi on the side (which we took home) and our bill for both of us was $32.00 and with the amount of food we ordered this was excellent. I have not had sushi that much, but my friend is a big sushi eater and kept commening on how the sushi was very good. We were very very pleased and will definitely be back!

The first thing I noticed about this sushi restaurant was that their sushi chefs are indeed Japanese. I just can't go to a sushi bar and have sushi prepared by non-Japanese chefs. I'm not a racist but simply a traditionalist. I love their sushi and I would recommend the place to all my friends.

I've been here twice, and so far I haven't been let down. The tuna at this joint is so good, it just melts in your mouth. As far as the cut rolls go, I would recommend the Spicy Tuna Roll and The Spicy Scallop Roll (you'll need to ask for it spicy or it'll be a regular tuna roll). For the sushi, I would recommend the Yellow Tail and Tuna. Everything is so good. Be warned, if you ask for Iced Tea, they'll give you a Lipton Can. I happen not to like the taste of tin, but for those who don't mind, there you go. Service here is pretty good and the price can't be beat.

The signs on the walls say it all. Amongst the "Cash Only, No Babies Allowed, and Must Order a Minimum of 3 Pieces", the waitstaff scurries around quickly serving the crowded dining area. Waitstaff isn't superfriendly and not very outgoing but that's the point. You get seated, you order and you get your food. And the food is great. The fish was extremely fresh and served pretty traditionally. No fancy or specialty rolls here but that's okay. If you're in the mood for a quick sushi meal with no frills (and a great price) this is the place for you.

I've been here twice so far. The fish has been excellent each time. The prices are very reasonable - you can expect to spend $8-12 for a standard 8-piece sushi plate. During the dinner I had, there was free green tea as well (but during lunch it was nonexistent). Noshi is a very open space and not very refined in terms of decor, so you might want to go elsewhere for a romatic date, but if you're looking for good sushi at good prices with a bunch o' friends - this is the spot for you.

So far everyone I've brought to this restaurant has gotten hooked. The fish is fresh, and given in generous amounts. The sushi chefs are wacky, and the waitresses are speedy. And to top it off, it's cheap! Every now and then you'll see celebrities too! Noshi's is to die for!

Pros: fast, cheap, yummy

Cons: can only pay cash, closed on mondays

You can not beat the value or the service if you work nearby in Hollywood. Noshi has offered really fresh sushi at amazing prices for years. I've introduced plenty of colleagues and coworkers, all of who claim that they are "sushi snobs" and none have been disappointed. Large booths and quick service allow you to order, relax and stretch out while doing business if you decide to stay to make the most of a lunch hour.

Pros: Low prices, Fast, Fresh

Simple, when the fish is fresh you cannot go wrong. A special greating for any foo coming in or going out of the joint, gets the taste buds started. Make sure you bring your grub on. The tuna is so fresh that it melts in your mouth. The spicy tuna roll is on point. Keeping it real, this place is good and cheap.

Sushi Noshi leaves a lot to be desired. After reading so many raving reviews I was expecting quite a bit more. Fish freshness was an issue, as was the service at the sushi bar. They didn't really offer an sort of imaginative rolls either. Even the wasabi was subpar. Sushi is one of those things that it's not only OK to splurge on, but essential.

Since I can rack up a good bill, it is a hassle that they don't take credit cards (cash only). Good sushi at decent prices. There are better sushi in town but you will have to pay more.

Yes, Noshi Sushi offers low price sushi. But, really, when it comes to raw fish, wouldn't you rather pay a little more for quality?
