Used to be passable, now mediocre
by Bill B.
Las Palmas on College has always been a matter of convenience for me since I have a friend who lives right up the street. I've never found the food particularly tasty and it carries about a 30% premium due to its location on College Ave.
Today I decided enough was enough, though. I asked for a simple substitution of sour cream instead of guacamole and I was told it would be an extra charge and that substitutions were not allowed. That's strange - it was never problem the last several times. Moreoever, the girl at the counter was particularly short with me and didn't even look at me while ordering.
They also started adding a debit card fee of 55 cents. On a typical food order, that can easily be a 10% premium. Sorry, the banks are not charging 10% on debit cards. That's just gouging customers.
I got about five jalapenos on my nachos. I asked for a few more and she said, "that's what it comes with".
At that point, I said, "Wow, you guys sure got lame. I don't think I'll be coming back here." She just ignored me.
There are much better taquerias with better food and lower prices in that area. Las Palmas has lost my business.

Satisfying my belly for over 20 years!!!!

It's a shame that this place doesn't have another location in the SF. To my understanding there are several imitators like Charlie's Las Palmas and the Las Palmas Super Burrito but the food quality is nothing like the flavors achieved by the Originators. The first location was established in the Eastmont Mall during its heyday. The 2nd location on College Ave opened up about 8 years ago. i generally go to the College ave location since they've added several more menu items and from the looks of it are still adding a few more here and there. Occasionally I like to stop by the Eastmont Mall location to say hello to the owners and order the seasoned pork burrito, which happens to be gigantic. The Burritos there are even bigger than the ones served at College Ave if you can imagine it. I think its due to the fact that their menu is smaller there. In any case, I think this place is worthy of mention for several reasons. Food, portions, and quality are all very good and the value is unmatched. Their competition has tried imitating almost everything they've done and are still far from achieving that wonderful flavor... I often crave a burrito at least once or twice a week... sometimes three in a week! when the new location opened up i must've visited at least a dozen times that first month. After almost two decades of enjoying the grub served here i can earnestly say it's my favorite and most likely will be yours as well if you try it and find your perfect burrito combination. Mine staple dishes are (1) Las Palmas burrito with seasoned pork (or sometimes grilled chicken), refried beans, in a tomato tortilla and freshly made hot salsa. yum! you can even get it WET with a red sauce drizzled over th whole thing. (2)their Beef Nachos rock! (3) Cheese steak sandwich!!! no Kidding! the owners used to run a Philly cheesesteak restaurant and they decided to put it on the menu since people remembered how good it was. Damn, I'm getting hungery just thinkig about it! Well, I'm done for now cause I've got to get my Las Palmas fix! Happy Eatings from your friendly neighborhood epicurean, Mr. Q!
PROS: The Original and Real Deal LAS PALMAS - NOT an imitator.
CONS: Only two locations
