I used to visit Hideaway back in the 70's when they rented horses and have been a boarder at Hideaway Ranch since 1994. I am also good friends with the daughter of one of the original owners (Lloyd Callen). So, I've had a personal connection to this ranch for a long time. My horses and I have always had a great experience with past owners of the ranch and the current owners, Lee and Alice Tavare. Lee and Alice are exceptional caregivers and have always been friendly and very helpful in any way needed. My gelding "Magnum" will be 23 years old this July and is in excellent health thanks to the wonderful care of Lee and Alice. Over the last three years they have made amazing improvements to the ranch and it looks fantastic!!! It is quiet and beautiful at the end of Cull Canyon Road, and I always feel relaxed and at peace when I go visit my horse. The other boarders at the ranch are always friendly and take special care of their horses. I love to bring friends and family out to the ranch and share the tranquility and beauty of this "Hidden Oasis"!!! I also wanted to mention that Alice is a very caring and special owner/ranch manager who loves all the animals on the ranch. She cares for boarder's horses as if they were her own. She is always going above and beyond the call of duty as a ranch manager. The trails are fantastic and are connected to park trails that can go on for miles! Hideaway has a huge outdoor arena and a large indoor arena with lights. I highly recommend anyone who is looking for a special ranch, to look no further than Hideaway Ranch!!!

I won't add my voice in rebuttal to the one bad review. It's all been said. I've been at Hideaway for a year and I love it. I initially put my horse there to work with an excellent trainer. I have to drive an hour to get there. The training was a month last spring. I've not moved my horse despite the drive because I love it! The owners are wonderful and very caring for the horses. My guy was injured recently and Lee and Alice couldn't have taken better care of him if he was their own. He was put in a stall, at no extra cost to me, and cared for until he no longer needed stall rest. Lee actually stood there to comfort King so that he would start drinking water. King is a very, very, very happy pasture horse and wasn't in love with the idea of a stall, to put it mildly. The boarders who come to Hideaway on a regular basis look out for each others horses and are quick to help if it is needed. Alice has given me many useful horse tips in a kind and loving manner. I appreciate her horse wisdom. Hideaway has become a regular part of my social, relaxing time. A friend and I usually spend nearly a full day there. I maximize my time due to the driving distance for me. The barn, arenas and pasture are well cared for and kept very clean. By all means feel secure about leaving your equine baby at Hideaway ranch.

I can't believe anyone would write this about this place. The owners are great and they take impeccable care of my horse. I have been there for amost a year now and we do not plan on leaving. I would never let my horse be cared for by people discribed in the poor review. That place is my horsey home and we love it there. Obviously the person who wote that was asked to leave for very good reasons.

Hideaway Ranch is in a very beautiful, quiet & scenic location which suits both my horses & I completely. My horses don't colic (which happened in the past) & are just fat & happy out in the pasture. I never have any problems using the arenas or trail areas. It is true that the Ranch is being rebuilt but my horses don't require show facilities so I'm more concerned with them getting the proper food, exercise & attention. As a novice horse owner I've had to ask Alice's help on many occasions & she's always been gracious with her time & hands on with my horses.I don't know what happened with the one reviewer but it certainly hasn't been my experience. Perhaps the reviewer had some personality conflict because I didn't read any real complaints about the treatment of the horses - which is after all the MAIN concern. I'll save the fifth star for Hideaway when all the renovations have been completed!!! But I'm certainly not moving my horses - it's a special little Ranch.

Who would write such a scathing review about a place they were so unhappy with and not sign their name? Either a coward or someone who is fabricating this story to make themselves feel better. Maybe you were asked to leave the ranch because of abusive treatment to your horse(s), you didn't pay your board, you stole or you were a danger to others and their horses. Whatever the reason, your review is complete bull.
I have boarded my 2 horses at Hideaway Ranch for 3 years and couldn't be happier. Alice and Lee care for my girls as if they were their own. That goes for all of the horses on the ranch, not just mine. I have seen them go above and beyond staying with sick horses and their owners all night. If a horses behavior changes at feeding time or any other time, the owners is notified immediately. Then, the horse is cared for until the owner can get there.
Alice and Lee are very dear friends to me and it is because they care so much for me and both of my horses. I know if they need anything, it will be provided. They are well fed and very content. I have no concerns for their well being while in the care of Alice and Lee. As for the "run down" comment, they are making improvements on a daily basis and the place is a mere shadow of what they inheirated when the bought it.
The trails are amazing, the barn is immaculate and in good repair. If any problems arise, they are dealt with immediately.
I spent my teenage years at Hideaway, and I am so glad that I could return as an adult. It is my happy place and an oasis in a hectic world. I thank Alice and Lee for everything they do. I'm sorry the person who wrote the bad review was too narrow minded to see how wonderful this place really is. If your looking for a dressage or jumping barn, this isn't the place for you. But if you want a family atmosphere, come see for yourself and decide. Don't take the word of any one person

I've been boarding at Hideaway Ranch in Castro Valley for quite a few months and I couldn't be happier. It's a hidden treasure in the world of horse boarding, where my horse and I are part of a family rather than just another horse and boarder. Alice and Lee, the owners of the ranch, are exceptionally caring people who watch over my horse like he was their own. My horse has a tendency to get himself into trouble and on numerous occasions they have gone WAY beyond the call of duty to help me with him when no other boarding facility owner would bother. Alice and Lee are working hard to bring Hideaway back to it's place as a first-rate facility. They inherited quite a run-down barn when they bought this place and are constantly working to improve things, so what a previous reviewer said about the place being a bad choice is not so. If you want a place where both you and your horse will feel happy and at peace, Hideaway IS that place!

As being the owner of Hideaway, I know who you are, and you were asked to leave because of your abusiveness to your horses and your clients. You have the nerve to call yourself a trainer, more like a train wreck. To those of you who read these reviews please check out our website and read the testimonials. The web site address is Hideawayranch.us The ranch has been here for many years, but is in no way run down. I have never had any boarders leave in haste, only the ones that were asked to leave, for abuse or theft. When people can not leave their name when they write a review, can you really believe what they write is true? We are not chain smokers, and never smoke in the barn. If I was intolerant, it was against the abuse you dished out on your horses. As far as unforgiving people, you were spoken to about your abuse on many different occasions and given many chances to change your ways. You choose not to. The other boarders disliked the way you treated them and you were dangerous, which I had also seen myself, so if this is where the wife played favorites with boarders, then I must be guilty. As far as being bigoted, I would love to know how I was. As far as hindsight on your part goes, I would never let you board your horses here again.
