I went here for the first time last week and I really enjoyed the service and environment of the store. The prices are a little much but the food is quite exceptional.

Do not go here

by Natalie M. | insider Insider | Rank: 12,800

Its my second time to the place, I didn't like it at all. The Service was the worse service i had ever experienced. The Hookah was not a hookah, but it was I think made of some kind of meat or something, It had smell of meat....I wouldn't recommend it to anyone.

Really Great Experience

by serrafina

I've come to this restaurant a few times for bdays and fun dinner parties and my friends and I have always had a great experience.:) The food is really flavorful, prices are reasonable, and the selection is great. You end up wanting to try everything. The atmosphere is unique and friendly. Maybe it's because the waiters recognize us, but I've never had lousy service here. On the contrary, it seems like they want to join our party.:) It can strike some as a bit cheesy, but the belly dancing and music is fun. Especially when you get the guys in your group up and shaking their hips. Anyway, this place has yummy middle eastern food and is quite entertaining.:) Grab a group of your friends and check it out if you're in the mood for some belly dancing action.

Horrible service. They don't care about the customer at all.

by chrisS1974

I could not believe how little they cared about us. The manager, host, and waiter spent the whole night text-messaging, talking on their phones, smoking, and hanging out with friends - all while our needs went completely ignored. While the waiter was explaining the menu to us, his phone rang 4 times... that was just the start of the unprofessional service. We ordered drinks and they came 45 minutes later after we reminded the server 3 times. He seemed more interested in talking with his friends. Our 2nd drink order took over 1 hour to be served to us - not because the restaurant was full, but because the server simply didn't care.

When we arrived, we were promised that a belly dancer performs all night, every night, and that she would be on within 10 minutes of our arrival. We were there for 3 hours and there was no dancer. We spoke with a local dancer in San Francisco and she said that the Marrakech routinely cancels their dancers if the restaurant isn't full. We asked the host no less than 10 times when the dancer would start, and each time he lied to us and told us that she would be on in "about 10 minutes".

We arrived at 7:00pm and we did not leave until 10:00pm, and that was only because we insisted that when the 'server' brings the main course that he also brought the bill. We could not wait any more. We were sure that if we waited for them to bring us the dessert and tea that our $35.00 was entitled to, we would have been there well past midnight.

I hated every minute I was there because I knew that they didn't care at all about our needs, and I knew they were lying to us all the time about the dancer.

To the credit of their chefs: the food was excellent. But I assure you, it is not so excellent that you suffer their miserable service for the 3-5 hours it takes them to serve you.

I give them a F+. The only reason I don't give an F- is because the food was quite delicious. Bottom line: Horrible, horrible service with good food.

Pros: Nice decor.

Cons: Horrible service. Claim of daily dancers is a complete lie. Overpriced. Very very very slow. Dining there takes over 4 hours. Incompetent bar staff.

If you are an attractive young female, you might get OK service. Otherwise forget it.

by andreaSauer

The waiter spent the whole time trying to seduce a group of pretty young girls that were seated next to us. He pampered them, he brought them drinks, he took care of everything for them.

For us, he did nothing - we were ignored all night. We placed our initial drink order, which he didn't bother to bring to us until an HOUR later.

There was no belly dancer, even though they promised us repeatedly that she would perform.

I cannot recommend to anybody. The service was awful and the food was just as bad. Half of the reason I went was for the dancer, who never showed up. We were there for almost 4 hours before our meal was completed... this was a dining-out nightmare.

We will NEVER go back.

Pros: Attractive decor

Cons: Horrid service, gross food, incompetent staff, lied about belly dancer

Awesome Exotic Atmosphere~!

by samera

My friends and I came to Marrakech not knowing what to expect, we were just looking for a hookah bar. They were extremely helpful before we even got there- i got lost several times and had to keep asking for directions. The atmosphere was really exotic and relaxing... it was the ultimate experience for me. We happened to go on the night they had dancing, so after we smoked some hookah and ate some food, we danced to some belly-dancing beats and some hip hop beats. We actullay were expecting it to be expensive, but the prices were very reasonable. It was a perfect night out.

Pros: Best ambiance ever

Cons: none

Great food, horrific service!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

by bailando30

We paid over $400 for my mother's birthday dinner at Marrakech and the service was horrible. There were a total of 12 guests and we were seated in 2 different sections of the restaurant. Then, they only brought drinks for the table my mother was sitting at. When, I asked the waiter for our drinks he got upset and began yelling as to why we didn't all place our orders at the same time. I tried but it is hard to tell a waiter what you want in 1 second before they run off. This is not the first time this has happened here. This is our second time here and I noticed on other reviews, it took them a loooooong time to bring drinks to the table. The servers are rude and the restaurant is understaffed. Then, when we went to pay for our dinner they overcharged me $20 on my credit card. When I looked at the receipt, there was no dollar amount indicated and I did not notice until I checked my bank account at home. Make sure they give you a printed receipt with the dollar amount! They are a bunch of swindlers! When I complained to the owner, he told me he would send a new waiter, but it must have been our waiter's TWIN freakin' brother, because it looked like the same waiter (which it was) but this one actually had a fake smile this time! I loved the food and the decor, and the belly dancer, but I will NEVER return here again. They're not the only Morrocan restaurant in town. Next time, I think I will try PASHA restaurant.
Good eating!

Pros: Good food, excellent show, great decor

Cons: terrible service, overpriced servings, overcharging

Very Average!

by lisahazarika

This Moroccon place was just average for us. We were around 8 of us and had reservations for the night. After being seated promptly, we started off with the drink menu which took forever to come and especially for the second round; we had almost completed dinner when it was served. We decided on the ?complete dinner? for us. Started with the lentil soup which was good, and then the salad followed, which had eggplant that was very tasty. The Bastilla which is chicken and nuts filled fillo dough topped with powdered sugar which came out pretty well. Finally the dinners came, according to our taste platters. Most of it were average, like lamb with honey, chicken with lemon and olives, Cornish game hen etc etc. Finally the mint tea to finish off the evening.
Overall, we were not very happy with the service as it took them forever to bring our drinks, and finally to bring the check. The food was average and overprices. However the highlight of the evening was the belly dancer who performed at some point of time in the evening and the music started!

Pros: Belly dancing every evening

Cons: Overpriced, poor service, average food

Fantastic experience!

by jimblair

Our dinner at the Marrakech was just AMAZING! We enjoyed the 5 course meal from start to finish. We particularly loved the Bastila and our Lamb dishes. Their bread is also out of this world delicious. The belly dancer was fun and all the staff members were very friendly and helpful. We had our hands washed on the table with this special orange blossom scented water and they also gave us some at the end of our meal to keep our hands smelling nice. I highly recommend this restaurant for a fun, warm, romatic and delicious dinner.

Pros: Food, entertainment, service.

Cons: None

A dinner with Kobe Bryant!!

by mlikb

Oh my god. What are the odds of having dinner next to a star?!!! Kobe Bryant was there on a Saturday night with his friends, totally lounging Moroccan style and enjoying the belly dance moves. I walked up to him and took a picture. He also signed my purse and my firend's camera bag. Amazing!!
But I mean regardless, this place is awesome. Great food, great athmosphere and the service is great. We enjoyed every minute of our meal and I definitely recommend Marrakech for an out of this world dinning experience!!

Pros: Food, Ambiance, Service

Cons: None

Overrated! Bland, overpriced food, poor service

by robainya

My friends and I chose Marrakech as the restuarant for our monthly "supper club" primarily because of the rave reviews on this site. Unfortunately, we were sorely disappointed. The place was half empty, yet we waited nearly 20 minutes for someone to bring us menus and another 20 minutes for someone to come take our order, never got the bread we asked for with our entrees, and waited another 30 minutes for our check. The food was edible, but aside from the soup and appetizer spreads, was incredibly bland and uninteresting?and overpriced. All of the entrees are $25 if you order them a la carte, including the vegetarian entree?which is nothing more than a plate of couscous with some vegetables on top. The full dinner is $35 and comes with a cup of lentil soup, a plate of hummus and a couple other salads/spreads, bastilla (which was soggy and tasteless), and a piece of baklava. Don't believe the hype.

Pros: Convenient location

Cons: bland food, overpriced, poor service

A Moroccan Good Time

by kckraft

When I headed to Marrakech on a rainy saturday night I had no idea what to expect. After making my way into the shelter of Marrakech I was seated at a lounge-like seating area where the fun was only beginning. Music was playing and although the floor was empty, as soon as my friends and I jumped on the dancefloor everyone joined in and the restaurant was alive. If your looking for a good time and a welcoming environment head to Marrakech.

Pros: great group setting & ambiance.

Cons: Might take a while to get seated.

Fantastic Food

by MauiGirl25

This is a must-stop for me every time I'm in San Francisco. I am truly speechless as to why people are complaining about the price - hello you live in SF?! For $35 you get a 4-5 course meal that is honestly very delicious. The lamb dishes are fantastic - the eggplant lamb is a must-try! the service i've always had is great, though the wait between courses can be long at times depending on the crowd.

Avoid for birthday parties

by vkuznetsov

We celebrated birthday of my girlfriend there and had very awful experience:
- we made reservation in advance and had 18 people, but they put us in space that was not sufficient for such number of people. Half of seats were very inconvenient. I am healthy dude, but my back hurt after 3 hours of this seating
- they brought us 4 consecutive dishes. Between each dish there was pause of at least 30 minutes. We spent there 3 hours eating. I am sorry, my stomach can not handle this kind of meal schedule. After you eat appetizer you expect main entry relatively soon, otherwise you are not hungry anymore.
- music was extremely loud. It was impossible to talk.
- food was OK, but I think is overpriced.
- there was not enough food. We paid $55 per person, but many people were hungry.

One positive comment: girl who did belly dance was very good.

Pros: do not recommend

Cons: music is too loud, bad service, overpriced

Your own middle-eastern palace

by hyperstar

This place turns into a kind of unofficial club on Thursday nights (lots of dancing..some disco lights..one of the servers started mixing some Arabic music), and a more official one on Saturday (they have a cover charge..) Every other day of the week, it's nice, the service is amazing, the bread and tea are exceptional. They even come wash your hands with scented water. Dim lighting, lots of oriental decoration, cushions and carpets everywhere, very sensual and romantic (reds, blacks, purples, swirling patterns...). However, it's also great for a large group, or even if you just want to come in for some hookah with a friend (highly recommended, lots of flavors for only $15). The guys who run it are very friendly, constantly coming around to refill your tea or to make sure you are having the best time possible. The bellydancing is good, but can vary. It's, at the least, always entertaining.

Pros: Great service, great tea, good hookah, delicious food, great ambience. Good for a party. Bellydancers every night

Cons: Can be a little expensive...but it's sort of a nice place.

The BEST Moroccan experience!

by hollymint

I was a little reluctant to go to Marrakech at first, having red some mixed reviews about it and all. Bottom line, Marrakech is just an exquisite place for an out of this world dining experience. I am not sure why some people complain about the prices when you're getting a 6 course meal for like 30 bucks! It's San Francisco people...and it's a five star restaurant too. The food was just to drool over. LOVED their lamb and the home made bread. The waiters were just eager to please us at all times. Very friendly place! After the Belly dance show was over, the DJ was playing club hits and people were dancing and having fun. At the end of our meal they washed our hands on our table with orange blossom scented water and gave us desert and tea. Great experience! Don't listen to the mixed reviews, go there and see for yourself. It's really worth it!

Pros: Food, Service, Prices

Cons: Street parking

A journey to romantic Morocco

by rachelr415

We loved this place! The food was delicious and the place was just GORGIOUS! It's decorated with Moroccan arts and crafts, you get to sit on floor cushions and the overall color palette is red and gold. Very romantic! The service was very friendly and efficient. DELICIOUS FOOD! We partucularly enjoyed their Moroccan magic drink and the orange blossom water they sprinkle on your hands after you're done eating. My four year old daughter fell in love with their belly dancer, who invited her to dance and even taught her some moves :-) We had a magic night! Thank you Marrakech.

We had delicious hookahs after our dinner and we danced to beautiful music! Great Food, Great Atomosphere!

by redsnap

Ate here with my husband and aunt who was staying in Union Square. We wanted to dine somewhere nearby. Marrakech was an excellent choice - relaxing atmosphere, you could linger, it was a dining experience. The restaurant is decked out in full Moroccan theme. The have hookahs if you so desire. There is belly dancing nightly. Hands are washed a few times at the table. Some patrons can sit on the floor (on pillows) otherwise, there are corner tables for all to sit on pillowed benches. The food was soooo good and the staff was so attentive and sweet. We ordered Moroccan wine and 2 full meals to share, but they gave all 3 of us the starters that came with - lentil soup and salad/bread. We all had baklava for dessert too. We had left overs, so I suggest sharing. Apparently this is common. I will definitely be back!

Pros: Entertainment, Great for Groups, Delicious Food

Delicious and Friendly!

by food_genius

My friends surprised me with a birthday dinner at the Marrakech. Thought I was going there for hookah and drinks..., it turned out that a whole dinner feast was all set up to celebrate my big O. It was a blast! The service was kind and the food was simply amazing. The BEST Lamb in the bay area. Really! I am Greek and I know! Loved the decoration and atmosphere, the hand-washing ritual on the table-with warm orange blossom scented water, and of course belly dancing was just the cherry on the cake. My birthday gift from Marrakech was a Fez hat and a couple of their house special drink, the famous, the only: The Moroccan Magic Drink. All in all, I highly recommend this place for a special and delicious occasion in your life!

The new Hip place in San Francisco

by miloud

Marrakech has become the place to see and be seen. They offer a great after 10 p.m hookah menu loaded with interesting flavors and really cool exotic cocktails. The DJ spins great tunes every night, belly dancing shows, and live music on Saturday and Sunday. This place is happening is because of their great food, great service, awesome atmosphere, and their flexibility to play customers CDs. Customer is really KING at the Marrakech! So you see Russians dancing to their own tunes, then cool mixed Arbic music for belly dancing fans, then house music, then Salsa music...My group of friends now swear by Marrakech. We're really lucky to have found such a great spot in San Francisco!!

Simply put, the best 5 star dining experience I've had in a long time. And for a bargain! Now I want to go visit Morocco! Not only the food was amazing and flavorful, but the service was great and timing was impeccable. They were just all so eager to please us from the host down to the sweet bus girl. They handled a 40 people party like a peice of cake. Also, their hookah menu is just impressive. They've got all the falvors there ever could be from Chocolate fudge to, Jasmine & honey to, Anise to, Apple cinnamon...and the list goes on... They also offer a delicious speciaty drinks menu that's so exotic and fun. My favorite was Cleopatra's cosmo. I may just had too many ;-) Not to mention the great belly dance entertainment and the cozy romantic Moroccan seatting. We'll be back Marrakech!

The best place for a Moroccan Tagine

by henrylund05

My wife and I were in Marrakech, Morocco last spring for our honeymoon. We had the most romantic and exotic experience we could ever have wished for. Since then, we have been trying some Moroccan restaurants here and there in San Francisco to capture the flavorful and delicious Morccan dishes again. I have to say that Marrakech Restaurant offers the best Tagine and Moroccan bread in the city. Especially Lamb. Just deliscious! I highly recommend this place for authentic Moroccan cuisine. The prices are great beacause you get a whole 6 course meal including desert in your set menu. We loved the romantic athmosphere, the Morccan magic drink, and the lovely host who gave us a free hookh on the house!!

Maybe not the place for groups

by sassaphras

I heard this was a great place for a birthday party. I have to say I disagree. Everyone found the food to be pretty mediocre and very expensive for the amount we were served. The host told us that being served as a group would be less expensive. It was actually about 1 1/2 times the menus rate for an entire dinner and we did not even get all of the courses. Our waiter was also very rude - perhaps it was the heat, because the restaurant was also very hot and stuffy, so people throughout the place were very uncomfortable. The belly dancer was fantastic though. However, you may want to consider going somewhere else if you have a large group.

Pros: belly dancer

Cons: service, cost, food

Romantic Engagement Party

by beth_anne

I had my engagement dinner at Marrakech and my group and I were all pleasantly surprised by the quality and value of our meal. The drink selection was excellent and the quality of the appetizers, lamb, chicken were outstanding. EVERYONE in my group enjoyed all the appetizers, entrees and the desserts. There was live music and belly dancing which definitely brought lots of fun too the party. I hope more people check this place out. It's a place where the chic SOMA folks will enjoy, but I also had a few friends from the Marina who had a great time, too, and wouldn't stop raving about the Lamb! It's a surprising find and successfully pulls off chic, romantic, and delicious food...

Couscous Royal from a Moroccan's view

by tangierac

The service was good, but the food is not what I expected from a Moroccan restaurant named Marrakesh. This Marrakesh invented their own Couscous Royal because the Couscous we eat in most Moroccan cities doesn't come with Brocoli and Cauliflower. Couscous Royal from Marrakesh definitely comes with 7 vegetables and the main one for flavor and smell is cabbage and a lamb sausage called Merguez. The tea was terrible from a Moroccan perspective, need to use green tea with mint and orange blossom buds. Sorry but food I had last night wasn't at all Moroccan not we cook at home.

Pros: decor, Hand washing, Hot bread

Cons: Not Moroccan food, Bastilla was raw, way over priced

Good food and service, Tenderloin prices

by vassariggy

I didn't know what to expect when I walked through the ornate doors, surrounded by large decorations on the outside, into this Tenderloin spot. The interior decor is very nice, with the traditional low copper tables and couches: it looked like there was plenty of space for a group, esp. on a week night as we were the only two eating. After having our hands washed, we split one full meal and one additional entree. The food was delicious, absolutely a departure from the ordinary. Try the chicken tangine with preserved lemons. The service was outstanding, and the host was welcoming to the point where he wanted to make sure we returned. Dinner for two is not cheap, but you will pay for a very good meal and service.

Pros: Exotic Food, Attentive Service, Welcoming Decor

Cons: Location, Pricy for Two

Romantic and delicious!

by salwas

I had a blast with my fiance last Monday in this place. I am glad we have somewhere like this in san francisco. I loved the food and the service. The music was beautiful and we had great fun. I highly recommend this place for families, groups or just couples who are looking to experience something exotic and romantic. We also smoked Houka, which was a real treat after such a nice Moroccan feast!

Pros: Delicious food, Beautiful place, Full bar

Cons: Opens until 5 pm

Bad food.

by markncooper

The place is cool and would be great for drink with a large group but the food was so-so. When our entrees were brought to us they were room temperature. When asked if this is how they are supposed to be served the waiter said he didn't know...and then brought them off and re-heated them. We ordered off the ala carte menu, which included a large entree for $25, which was WAY too expensive. The housemade bread, as mentioned in other posts was good, but that was pretty much the highlight.

Great Moroccan food

by pamellala

My husband and I got married in this restaurant 3 years ago, and it was simply a fairy tale. We went back last week to celebrate our wedding anniversary, and we were so happy with our dinner at marrakech. The waiters were so professional and helpful, and the food was deliscious. The live band also played a happy anniversary for us in Arabic, and we danced sipping on our champagne glasses. They also gave us a Fes hat for a present!!
This place is great and I highly recommend It.

Pros: Romantic, Great food, Awesome service

Fun, tasty evening

by michelle.castillo

My lamb was so tender and delicious, and overall the food was very flavorful. The entertainment was fun and not too in-your-face, a problem I've seen at other Moroccan restaurants. The service was super prompt. Decor was cool, too. Another plus was that the tables were not too close and crowded together (again at other Moroccan restaurants, I've felt like I was being corraled in like sheep). I went with a friend but this would be the perfect group spot...something different and fun.

Pros: flavorful food, fun belly dancing, cool decor

Marrakech

by lima_bean

I have had the occasion to eat at a few different Moroccan restaurants, and have mixed feelings about Marrakech. The service was eager-to-please while they were helping you, but often disappeared and were nowhere in sight if you happened to need something. The decor was either gaudy or really authentic, or a mixture of the two, and was a bit distracting. Most importantly: the food. I tried the fixed, five-course menu, and was not too impressed with the lentil soup or salads. The hot, fresh-baked bread was very tasty, as was the entree my date ordered, the lamb with honey and almonds. The mint tea, served in glasses, was sweet and a nice end to the meal,

Pros: entrees

for fun but not food

by ariel1973

extremely slow service and main courses were overly sweet or too bland. the starters were the best part of the meal--the bastilla chicken pastry pie and eggplant and tomato dips with moroccan bread. entertainment was very good, but loud, and beware if you prefer watching to participating--you may be called out to dance!

Pros: entertainment, ambiance, exotic

Cons: , over-priced, no napkins
