Through my experience, this school isnt the best in the community. I have known many teachers their and I get an overall vibe that something is not right. Although there are some good things about this school. It is located right near Mira Costa high school so it makes it easy for commuting if you have children in both schools. Its layout is also nice and airy. One other thing is that parking to pick up your child is horrendous.

Moving my child into this school was a mistake.

I put my child in this school in the 3rd grade. She was heaviy shoved twice in line the first day of school right in front of the teacher, and when she went to the teacher for help, the teacher told her, "We don't tattle in 3rd grade." WHAT! She went back in line and got terrorized yet again. Well, I kept her in this school for 6 months, and had to pull her out.

My overall impression of this school is that the teachers are uncaring, overwhelmed and exasperated, and the principal has no interest in the parents or students. When I went to the office to tell him I was pulling my daughter out of school because she was not happy here, he simply stated, "OK," and turned around and went into his office. I found out from another parent that he had the same reaction to her when she pulled her son out of the school. There was no, "What's the problem." Nothing.

If you want overwhelmed teachers and bully's as playmates for your children, this school is for you.

P.S.
This school district requests $600 per student per year from you. I say request, but I want to say demand. Plus, you get a nice long list of supplies that are required the first day of school, like kleenex and paper towels. This extended list usually costs you about $60, and you need to replace supplies during the year as they are used up.

AND, if your child misses a day of school, they ask you to pay $35 per day...this is the money the State would have paid them if your child would have gone to school that day. I thought public school didn't have these kinds of fees? Especially since the homes in the area average over 1 mil, so you pay so much to the school through property taxes. There is even a roomer that they want to go to homes that DON'T have kids in school and ask THEM to donate $600 a year, because they say it's the school district that is making their homes more valuable. Hmm, maybe it's also because this is a beach community??

PROS: This school does do good on testing, but at what cost?
CONS: Teachers, principal, they ask for $600 per student plus supplies, more...

Pennekamp is a great elementary school for your children to go to. It's located near Mira Costa High School, right in the middle of a big residential area. A short walk and even shorter drive from most homes in the area, the staff and teachers are kind loving and very very good. Your kids will have lots of fun while getting a great education.
