If you love fondue, this is the place that you must go. The restaurant is kind of hidden in the office building. But their service and food is very good.

Always a fun place to go with friends. A big group is better so you can try more of the fondues. Do not skip the chocolate dessert fondue!

Dinner here is an experience, not only do they do fondue but they also have meals, so you can have your choice for a meal if you feel like fondue wont be enough. They specialize in cheese fondue but they have meat oil fondues as well which is like pretty much cooking your own meal.
Their dessert is a chocolate fondue with an assortment of fruits and marshmellows to dip inside the chocolate. The portions are large and they will fill you up. Love it, go once a year atleast.

Love this restaurant. Brings back memories of those fondue parties I used to have in the 1970s. Selection is great.

The Matterhorn has the most amazing fondue I have ever tasted. I lived in Switzerland for three years and moved back to the bay area and this fondue is the best I have tasted in the U.S. They provide Valet Parking and the service is great. Highly reccomend!!

This is one of San Francisco's hidden treasures, created by a charming Swiss couple who strive to bring the authentic flavors of Switzerland to their customers. The service is classic European -- very courteous, but not fawning or intrusive. The austere exterior belies the absolutely gorgeous interior decor -- the hand-carved wood panels, booths, and tables were fully constructed in Switzerland then shipped over to SF and reconstructed here. You'll see Swiss masks, the alpenhorns, and cowbells, and delightful stained glass windows. \r\n\r\nFor your first visit, try the classic cheese fondue, and leave room for dessert -- the Chocolate Fondue is to die for! (Note that it is only served with dinner -- you can't get it as a stand-alone.) The side dishes are worth trying -- especially the sausage and apples. The menu also includes some other standard Swiss/German entrees, and we've tried them with varying results -- all were nice, but the real reason to visit the Matterhorn is for the wonderful fondues. The fondue festival is accompanied by a very nice salad, tossed with a light viniagrette dressing. \r\n\r\nWe return for special occasions or to surprise our out-of-town guests with a real change of pace. Older children will enjoy the adventure, however, toddlers will likely need lots of entertainment and attention from parents, as the dinners are designed to be engaging and leisurely. \r\n\r\nWe really enjoy the ""Swissness"" of this place, which is incorporated from your greeting through the attitudes of the waitstaff, to the menu and decor. It is all the highest quality, and the owners want everything precisely correct. If you appreciate this attention to detail, you'll love the Matterhorn!

I enjoyed everything about our meal at the Matterhorn. There is a very good selection of wines available. The cheese fondue we had was tasty and fresh (the side of sausage was especially good and the side of apple surprisingly so). Our desserts were nicely decadant. Our waitress happily seated us at a quiet romantic spot when we told her we were celebrating our anniversary and the owner happily engaged with us. Heartily recommended to all - my wife and I are even planning on taking the mother-in-laws here!

It was nice to find a fondue restaurant in San Francisco. Parking was a little tough, but we were able to find a spot four blocks away. As we walked in, the atmosphere looked inviting--dim lighting with a hint of red glow; wine glasses and the smell of gruyere cheese. We stood at the front, like one usually does, and an older man approached us and asked, ""Reservation?"" ""Uh, no...."" The restaurant was half empty. The man made a huge fuss, as if he would have to go out of his way to get us a table. Well, he picked up the menus and seated us right away--of course. We ordered the cheese fondue, but the meat fondue looked very good as it wafted by. Next time we'll probably get that one. Our neighbors were mostly tourists or marina locals. People were nice enough--I think. In any case, the same man came by to ask us how we were and I asked for another half bottle of wine. He paused as if that wasn't his job and almost didn't acknowledge my request, but then he decided to take our empty bottle and hand it to one of the very nice waitresses. The bill was huge; the food was good and rich; the atmosphere was nice; and the ""vibe"" was not so hot.

Pros: It's fondue!

Cons: Price

After having real fondue in Switzerland last year, I can honestly say that this is the best fondue I've had in the states! There were many varieties of cheeses to choose from, but if it's your first time, try ""The Original"", it's made of Swiss and Gruyere cheeses and is superb! A huge basket of baguette bread to dip comes with the order as well. We also tried the meat fondue, where you dip raw meat or fish into boiling oil or veg broth. The meat cooks in 15-30 seconds, I swear! This is also delicious and comes with dipping sauces and sides of veggies, fruit and marinated olives I highly recommend this restuarant if you want authentic Swiss Fondue served in a warm and inviting atmosphere. Enjoy!

I was very disappointed with this restaurant. The ambience and the decor was very nice and cozy, but the cheese fondue was not good at all! You can't even taste the cheese in the fondue and it was extremely bitter and overcooked. It tasted like cheap white wine with burnt cheese. YUCK!!! On top of that it is way overpriced. Here is an idea for you fondue lovers. Go to your local grocery store, buy some good quality cheeses (look for the fondue recommended label), a bottle of white wine, a baguette and some garlic. Go home and make fondue yourself cause trust me it will taste much better than this restaurant.

My boyfrend & I return again and again to Matterhorn. The decor & ambiance make us feel like we've travelled to a cozy lodge in Switzerland for dinner! The service is fabulous- everyone is very friendly and warm. They have a large variety of fondues and everything we've tried has been delicious! The wine list offers a large variety of wines, including some great Swiss wines.

I dined at Matterhorn this evening, and had a horrible experience. We probably saw the waitress, all of 3 times at our table. She forgot part of our order and was nowhere to be found most of the night. We ordered the fondue for 2, and a bottle of wine... total was about $120, and definitely not worth the price. I don't mind paying for good food, but this was straight out of a dorm cafeteria.\n\nWorst of all, the place smells of old oil from everyone cooking at the table. My clothes and jacket have that burnt oil smell even hours later. Very gross.\nVERY DISSAPOINTED... spend your money elsewhere..

My husband and I love this restaurant! The food is excellent and there is plenty of it. It can get a little pricey with the ""add ons"" like chicken and shrimp but overall it's a pretty good value for the amount and quality of food.

I'm very surprised at some of the bad reviews. This is definitely not a place ""just for tourists."" My husband and I have both been to the Alps and we found this restaurant charming and authentic and reminiscent of our visit. The fondue was delicious, the service attentive, and the atmosphere adorable. Even my snobbiest of foodie friends swear by this place for fondue. Go and enjoy!

Just came back from Switzerland. The Matterhorn SF gives you a wonderful swiss experience. We always come with my 2-year old and the owner adores him. She actually walks around with him while me and my husband are eating. \nWe just love it.\n

As it is, I was at the Matterhorn last Sunday night. I saw only one small toddler in the Restaurant which was bothering everybody else, crying and trying to get out on the dining room floor. The parents seemed completely stressed out and did not bring anything to play for the kid. What a shame to pin your miserable planing on the Restaurant. I saw a bowl falling from the table and the mess under the table, oh my god!!\nSorry people but you should take full responsibilty for your actions! \nI got annoyed about this toddler myself and can not blame the Restaurant to protect their property when it is eaten at or spit over. Sorry, no..\nBy the way, the food and service was great as usual. Well, hopefully other parents read this and plan ahead for a nice night out.\n\n\n\n

We just came home from the Matterhorn very upset. Our food was actually decent, however, it was not worth the treatment. We made reservations at the Matterhorn with my young daughter based soley on the comment listed under the title to the resturant ""Specializes in Family."" The service was sub-par anyways, but when the manager came to our table and jerked a dessert menu from my daughter's hand and told her ""NO"" we asked for our check....only to be charged for dessert that had yet to be brought to our table. The waiter came out shortly after with the dessert and said ""sorry, she doesn't like kids."" Needless to say I would NOT reccomend this to anyone...family or not they are not professional or courteous and the food doesn't make up for it.

The food was well, but it is not so authentic as in Switzerland, also the waiters. The most negative points are firstly: it is too expensive. I'd expected for this price more quantity and better service. Secondly, the Service from the chief is very unfriendly. This could be really improved.\n

Based on other reviews we planned a birthday dinner for a party of four. Our server recommended we order one cheese fondue and one meat fondue. We followed her recommendation and also ordered several extra sides for dipping. We received our cooking oil and some of the sides (one was never served), but we had to ask for the beef that was supposed to come with it and then waited 15 minutes before it was brought to the table. The oil lost its heat quickly and was not able to cook all of the meat that we ordered. They offered to re-heat the oil saying it could only be re-heated once, but once was not enough to heat all of the raw meat. They are generous with the bread and water. I would not recommend this place!

When I read all the good reviews I was very excited to go the the Matterhorn. What else to expect than good food and service from the Swiss. Food was just wonderful presented and really fresh. The wine list is superb and so reasonably priced. Well done!\nThe waiter told me that the restaurant is open for 11 years now.. wow.. that means a lot in SF. \nIf you want great food, fun and a little bit of an european experience, that's the place to dine!

I've been dining at this restaurant for years now and tried almost every fondue and LOVED almost all of them. This is my favorite restaurant by far in San Francisco because of the food, the full bar, the wonderful wine list that the wait staff are happy to help with, and the service is always wonderful. \nI would definitely RECOMMEND ordering cheese, meat and chocolate fondue AND all the side dishes to dip AND trying a new wine. It may seem a little more expensive, but if you're going to go you might as well bask in the glory of what they have to offer. \nOn top of that it is a very pleasant, calm, european decor and has VALET PARKING!!!!! usually on weekend nights. this is pretty crucial on van ness. otherwise you can park south a few blocks at a pay lot.

This is a really cool place to check out, especially if you want something a little different than the norm. This was our first fondu experience, and it was made easier by a very friendly and helpful waitstaff. We started out with a bread and cheese fodue, then moved to cubes of meat that you dip in the hot oil for 30 seconds or so to cook it. Then you dip it in one of the many sauces they bring out for you. The main course also comes with a few sides. This is a great place for sharing. Pretty good wine list, and the decor is really great. You would never know from the outside. With wine, appetizer, main course and tip I think we spent like $90 for two people. We definitely left full and the quality was well worth it. Next time we'll bring along some friends.

We bring our nephew and niece here every time they come into town and they love it. This is the place the appreciate a true European experience. Bridgette is the wine expert and can guide you through a fantastic selection of wines to go with both the Cheese and other fondues. Take your time, enjoy the atmosphere, and soak in a bit of Switzerland.

The reviews hit it on the nose. Service is bad, but it's not intentional. They're robots, moving very fast, forgetting the essence of customer service. Nothing was explained to us. You get various condiments and sauces with your meat /cheese fondue. Would be nice if they pointed out some of the different sauces and advice on how to create delicious bites. Meat pot is too small for a group of 6. Colored sticks would be good so to can tell which stick belongs to you. Corkage is too much for the quality of service. No one refilled our waters until the very end when we had to ask. For a group of 6 you can only order Fondue, nothing from the appetizer /entree menu. Having never been to a swiss/german restaurant more options could have warranted a repeat visit. Good to try once, but not a repeat visit.

I tried Matterhorn for the first time and loved it. While dining there as a group may be the thing to do, dining as a couple works out just as well if not better. We started with a single order of the cheese fondue; it was good but perhaps a little too strong on the taste of wine. We continued to the thin slices of beef and that was excellent. Finally we ended the meal with some fruit dipped in chocolate and some coffee, quite the treat. The service was excellent and very helpful on the whole it was a great experience and we'll defiantly be back.

This place is over rated. Although the ambiance was nice, it took forever for the host to get my reservation info from me as soon as I walked in. I'd say I was waiting for a good 10 minutes for the host to come back to the front. (And the restaurant isn't very big). The beef fondue was a bit bland and cheese fondue was so-so.

It was an experience but I wouldn't go back. Service was very slow and the food wasn't as impressive as the restaurant was rated in this web site. I believe the quality of cheese could improve taste.

It was an experience but I wouldn't go back. Service was very slow and the food wasn't as impressive as the restaurant was rated in this web site. I believe the quality of cheese could improve taste.

Pros: Something unique

Cons: , Service, Food

.

I went to this restaurant with my Swiss boyfriend a couple of years ago and loved the place. We decided to go back a few weeks ago and found the food quality to be a lot lower. We had the traditional fondue and even I agreed it was very runny with too much garlic and alcohol. I decided to try the 'Belle Helene' for dessert and found the presentation to be good but, not impressed with the taste. Too expensive for the quality of food.

A group of 8 of us came to give Fondue a go. It was so much fun! We had an abundance of food -- meats, chocolates, fruits, vegetables, etc., and an immense variety of dipping sauces, all for you to prepare for yourself as you please, right in front of you. You could eat for an hour and never have the same bite twice. We brought a bunch of our own wine which was fun. Dinner ran about fifty bucks apiece but in my opinion was completely worth it. It was such a fun, interactive experience. Granted, the ambiance could use a little work, but we were so immersed in our own table it didn't matter. A great place!

Overall, the Matterhorn is a wonderful experience with professional waitstaff and a very kind and friendly owner. The food is good but it's a bit on the expensive side for our budget - meaning this is a special occasion rest. for us.

I had been hyping up fondue to my fiancee based on my experience at La Fondue in Saratoga. What a huge difference and disappointment! I felt like we were sitting in some fast food chain. The place was clean but had no ambiance. We only saw our waiter once and that was to place our order. He didn't even bother to offer suggestions or to further explain the our options. The food was average at best. I HIGHLY recommend making the trip to Saratoga (about an hour) for La Fondue. So worth it!!

Having had one of the best dinners of my life, I just wanted to say, that it is a shame, that most of the bad reviews for this Restaurant have to do with the corkage fee. If you can not afford to dine out, stay at home, and leave your cheap bottle of wine there too. \nHaving worked in the industy I feel for the Restaurant. So, disregard all the unfavorable reviews, they are mostly from disgruntled cheap and classless people, who should learn how to dine out!!\nGood job Matterhorn, you rock..

I have been to Switzerland many times. I love fondue, and I know how to make it and what most of the Swiss cheeses are. The ""traditional"" fondue at Matterhorn was terrible. It tasted extremely alcoholic, and was the consistency of broth. I honestly didn't even eat it. And the sliced apple was mushy. Obviously there is no quality control here. The corkage is $20--too much in my opinion. Our waiter was very nice, but the hostess (owner?) was unwelcoming. I won't go back.

We recently went for a friend's Birthday - the one tough part was we had 16 people and were seated at two separate tables. It worked out all the same - the Oh La La fondue was fantastic as were the beef and sausages. I would agree that the service was rather brisk but I think that's more a function of the staff actually being European where people are not ""overly-polite"" as most Americans (yes I am one) are used to. We had a lot of fun eating there and I think it would be a great place for a still getting to know you/second date.

I'm rather suprised at some of the ratings I've been reading here for the Matterhorn. The service on the many occasions I've been there has been nothing short of professional and courteous. It's brisk and efficient, but not unfriendly. I've had many of the cheese fondues, and the food is generally outstanding, though the desserts need a little work. This is a simple, straightforward fondue restaurant that is, according to Swiss friends of mine, almost exactly like one would find in Switzerland.

""Matterhorn Swiss Restaurant"" is the BEST restaurant that I have been to in a long time. I travel for my job and I get to enjoy restaurants all over the U.S. While in San Francisco, I heard about this place and thought I'd try it. Since I lived in Switzerland for a while, I knew what type of Ethnicity I expected. Well... needless to say, I got it. The hospitality that I received was the BEST I have ever seen. So many restaurants forget this great asset in employees. I am happy to say that I was deeply impressed with their service attitude. The food was also grate and was very delicious. I recommend the dessert. MMMMM good.

We chose this restaurant for a friend's birthday and it was a terrible choice. I would NOT recommend this restaurant. Our service was terrible -- it took at least 30 minutes for them to come and take our order and after the waiter got our order wrong, he cursed at our table. It was extremely unpleasant. Additionally, a friend brought a bottle of champagne as a gift for our friend and they charged us a $35 corkage fee...MUCH higher than many restaurants and more expensive than the four bottles of wine that we ordered at the restaurant. I found the staff to be extremely rude and unpleasant. I would not contemplate ever returning to this establishment.

Having lived and worked at a Swiss hotel growing up, this is an authentic Swiss dining experience! Fantastic food, warm atmosphere with wonderful woodwork, excellent Swiss (non-intrusive) service. \n\nIt is not cheap, but well worth the money. Non-fondue items are solid, but for your first visit, a cheese fondue to start and Fondue Chinoise this is where they shine. Wine list is ample, fine array of aperitifs and good coffee. Chocolate fondue is a must for dessert.\n\nMost critics of this restaurant complain about service: NEWSFLASH -- European service ideals are different from the American ideal... Your server will be courteous and efficient, but will LEAVE YOU ALONE, not visiting the table every three minutes... It will be a long meal: this is not the place to go before the opera or theater. It is best suited for large, social gatherings that will be the focus of the evening.

Cons: Spendy, Always Busy, Takes Full Evening

Matterhorn is fondue central: nine kinds are available, served in traditional style with a bubbling pot of oil and broth and accompanied by side dishes and condiments. But there is more to life here than fondue. We love the fish, poultry…
