The Korean Art Gallery is my favorite section of the Asian Art Museum of San Francisco. Korean art is just so beautiful. Don't forget to also check out the Chinese,Vietnamese,Thai,Cambodian,Indonesian and Malaysian art sections too.

Ratings_icons treasures I never saw in Asia

This museum is amazing. They vastness of their collection is eye opening. So often in Asia the museums or the cultural sites lacked explanation and good displays of the cultural heritage. This museum really brings those items to light. This is a large museum so allow lots of time.

PROS: great exhibits.
CONS:

My girlfriend loves visiting the Asian Art Museum of San Francisco. They have some of the oldest art exhibits from various Asian countries. We paid $6 for each of us because we have student IDs. You can join the tour group which is free with admission or you can roam around at your own pleasure.

Ratings_icons Nice architecture, ok exhibits

Anonymous

The Asian Art Museum has a nice, centralized Civic Center location. The architecture is nice, if mainstream and lacking in uniqueness. The central ballroom has been preserved, and it's a good spot for Kodak moments. The original large series of paintings from the Main Library is on view at this museum. I wish there was more modern Asian art at this museum. There's a cafe with a nice-sounding menu, but it's fairly pricey.

The biggest museum that hold some of the oldest and treasurable objects of Asia in California and maybe the country. They have pieces of treasure from all over Asia that some of the people of great importance have owned and is now presented there. The staff is great and can tell which popular attractions there are to see. Definitely a place to visit if your a big fan of art.

If youwant a day of culture, you have to visit the Asain Art Museum located in Golden Gate Park. It is one of my favorite museums in teh city because it has such a wide variety of exhibits. You can learn all about the ancient Chinese dynasties and all of their traditions. the price to this museum is very reasonable and free one day per month. Its a great experience.

I've been here plenty of time and there is always something new I learn/see everytime. I really enjoied their presentations/tours and their staff is very friendly. I went once where they had a special event where the artist for "Mulan", the Disney Movie, was there. It was a great experience.

This is one of those places in a big city that you never hear about and it is never crowded. Obviously this place specializes in Asian art. The two upper floors have all the permanent exhibits ( the ones that are there all the time) from places like China, Korea, Japan, Indonesia, etc. There was a lot of pottery and a lot of jade, asian art definitly has a lot of those two components. The lower part is exhibits that come and go. I wouldnt really spend the whole day here, maybe a couple hours, it really depends on whether you are a museum person or not. For me, two hours at a mueum is plenty, all the 3000 year or artifacts start to look the same after while. You can take a look at the gift shop or relax by getting some food, also Asian. I food is overpriced but its good to try some of it.

A wonderful museum that provides a cultural experience.

With admission for College students (with ID) at $6 and $10 for adults and FREE admission on the first Tuesday of every month, the Asian Art museum is a wonderful place to spend the whole day. That's right. The whole day. With three floors, it's amazing that you can actually spend the whole day pondering on beautiful artifacts and exhibits.

Downside - tiring. With a limited number of spots to rest, you can find yourself drained by the end of the day.

PROS: Wonderful and vibrant exhibits
CONS: Tiring and limited areas to rest

I've been to the new Asian Art museum only once but I'm itching to go back. They have everything from ancient pottery to modern art, from places like China, Japan, Korea, as well as South East Asia. I really enjoyed the exhibit on the Chinese Jade carvings. The museum also has new exhibits all the time, such as the one on Tibet that is currently showing. They also have special programs, like Japanese tea tasting, or Thai dancing, and fun arts and crafts projects for kids.

Ratings_icons Great Art in a lovely setting

Kim P. | insider_expert Insider Expert | Rank: 2,176

San Francisco has among the best Asian Art Museum in this area. They have attentative staff, so you don't have to wait to long before paying and going in. The staff are discrete, so that you barely notice them. they have a variety of Art showing, that changes every couple of months. This is a big place with a lot of variety of asian art from all over the world.

Ratings_icons Great art and culture

My parents went here for a formal event and came back exclaiming how good it was. It features quite an extensive collection, and tickets can be bought on line. Right now they're exhibiting artifacts from Tibet, which is a rare chance for westerners to see some authentic Asian sculptures and paintings. Go there and feel cultured.

This museum is really a great place to go and see Asian art. They have interesting exhibitions traveling through fairly regularly. I really enjoyed the Tibet exhibition. Take a trip here and plan to spend a couple of hours wandering around and learning. Also, it is a great place to take a date.

The Asian Art Museum, located in the gorgeous city of San Francisco, is an educational treat!! If you have an interest in Asian culture and artwork, look no further!! You can view items that are thousands of years old.....take a trip through time, and see the rise and fall of many dynasties. It is most appropriate for school aged children through adult. The Asian Art Museum is located close to other museums and Golden Gate park. It's a must see for Asian art lovers!!

Ratings_icons One of the best

I grew up in the Sunset area and alot of Asaian Americans live in this area. I was not able to learn too much about Asain art in school, so this compensted for my lack of knowledge. I love the art exhibits that they have. i also love when the feature certain works from certain areas. And of course, if you can not afford to go, it is free the 1st Wednesday of every month. Its well worth it even to pay!

This place is so big. It's in downtown San Francisco near the library and city hall. They have the most interesting exhibits and shows. All their arts are very nice to look at. Admission is about $5-10 a person, but it is definitely worth the pay.

Ratings_icons New Location! Great Collection!

Ned M. | insider_expert Insider Expert | Rank: 3,473

Now located at civic center this museum straddles new and old perfectly. The lay out is a little confusing but the collection is great. It's not just the old but has plenty of modern stuff. THe recent geisha exhibit was fantastic. The exhibits don't stay long, so be sure to check back often.

I never visited the old location in Golden Gate Park, so I had no notion of what to expect, but I read that Avery Brundage's vast collections would be better displayed in this larger facility.
Good for half a day, plus a good hour for going thru the well-stocked, but expensive, gift shop. The museum cafe is good, and obviously has its focus on Asian food.

This is another one of those city treasures that is surprisingly never crowded. They have perhaps the nation's most comprehensive collection of Asian art and displays them in the most intriguing manner. They also have a section for temporary exhibitions which tend to focus on contemporary art which rivals that of MoMA. They also feature free and discounted nights as listed on their website.

PROS: rarely crowded and also has contemporary exhibitions
CONS: bad neighborhood

This is probably one of the largest museums to showcase Asian Art (well, outside of Asia.) It's huge - it's clean - it's well-done. They go beyond the Ming Vase and explore things like Indonesian puppets, Tibetan sand art, and have thoughtful and world class special exhibits and activities.

PROS: It's a great museum.
CONS: It's $10.

San Francisco, which has a large Asian-American population, finally has a museum that's worthy of its rich Asian heritage. It's a spacious facility that opened in 2003, and has just unveiled The Kingdom of Siam, which runs through May 8. There are sculptures, temple furnishings and miniature paintings dating from 1350 to 1800. A beautiful serene place to be.
