The New Zealander is a great restaurant and pub. It is located in a beautiful old Victorian building with stained and leaded glass and a gorgeously and ornately carved bar. The menu is very interesting and includes bar food such as a great ham and grilled pineapple sandwich, and a New Zealand-style hamburger. It also includes delicious soups, delightful dinners with very interesting sauces, New Zealand pies, and tasty desserts. Their cocktails and wine list are also superb. On some Friday nights, they have live bands that bring a nice conclusion to the end of the work week.
I enjoy going out to dinner and like to be treated well for how much I'm paying. The New Zealander was way over-priced and really awkward.
Although there's a nice decor, the atmosphere was not pleasent. It was cold and uncofortabe, staff bickering. The music was either too loud than than too quiet and all over the place. The menu was limited and hard to find something I wanted even though supposedly they have the same food and original chef. Nothing on the menu seemed the same axcept the pies and lamb burger. I ordered the calamari and mussles for appitizers and lamb burger. Once they finnally came out the mussles were cold and tough and the calamari was also tough and way too salty. I had to wait 10-15 minutes for my second beer and all I wanted to do was just get out of there. I would never go back again! I wish I could get my money back actually.
Pros: few good beers
Cons: overpriced, tasteless and inconsistant food
This neighborhood pub in Alameda serves some really good food. We sampled one of their famous pub pies which was tasty and the Ba Ba Burger is delicious. They also have a pretty good selection of beer and wine. The service was also very good, our waitress was always there when we needed her and the busser would magically appear out of thin air to clean away plates and glasses.
We had a great time at The New Zealander and will definitely be making a return trip.
Pros: Great Food, Good Service
Cons: No Parking
When we sat down and looked at the menu I had a hard time finding something i wanted to order. So many variations of the same thing it seemed. Ultimately i ordered some sort of lamb. I usually like lamb but this was pretty bland. The service was also not very good . The place wasnt very busy and it still took a long time to get anyone to pay attention to us and for the food to come out.
Pros: The building it is in looks nice.
Cons: Everything else. The food - not good or varied, the service - slow and inattentive
