There is a science -- and also an art -- to brilliant pediatric medicine -- and Dr. Mary Ann Zetes (and the staff at Altos Pediatrics) personifies the best of both. She rapidly recognized that my teen's GI symptoms represented an emergency bowel obstruction and orchestrated his care meticulously through eight days of hospitalization at Lucille Packard. She spoke to me personally every day he was ill and arranged for follow-up care and testing that was above and beyond. My child is now well -- completely recovered -- and I can say this only because of Dr. Zetes and the entire staff at Altos Pediatrics. Brilliant, conscientious, insightful, caring, dedicated. The best care available anywhere on the planet.

I've been taking my daughter to Altos Peds since she was born 18 years ago (I must get her an adult internist now). She's home from college for the summer and has all the symptoms of strep throat. I called Altos Peds and got an appt for this afternoon. This is one of the best features of AP: same day appt...always.

On the downside, Dr Loeb failed to diagnose my daughter's diabetes, even putting me off when I asked, "What about diabetes???" on the phone when my daughter's health was failing. Dr Loeb said nonchalantly, "You can wait til her next physical [in two months]." Fortunately, I did not wait and got the diagnosis immediately. The test for diabetes requires only a urine dipstick test and if positive, then a pin prick blood check for ketones. Quick, minimally invasive, and cheap. Dr Loeb should have ordered that test right away when I answered "yes" to all her screening questions (weight loss, excessive thirst, fatigue).

After that disappointing experience I checked around for another doctor/practice and was steered right back to AP from nurses/friends, so I decided to give it--but not Dr Loeb-- another try. Dr Oro stepped up to the plate, took my daughter on, and helped get us through the crisis. She's fantastic!

Overall, I do recommend the practice. They provide excellent medical care, with the very significant exception of Dr Loeb's overlooking my daughter's diabetes.

I've been going to Altos Pediatrics since my children were born. Though the doctors are fine, be forewarned, they are never there. The office is closed between noon and 2 during weekdays, and you have to call back during "office hours" to get anything done. They contract with Lucille Packard during off-hours, those folks are useless. The advice nurses are a mixed bag, some are very helpful and some are really short. The front desk is absolutely poor, worst attitude I've seen in a long time. They also won't take HMO, which is a growing trend with doctors trying to preserve their healthy incomes. I would be fine with that if the doctors were great, but they're not good enough to overcome all the other inconveniences. I would seriously consider going with one of the larger groups, such as PAMF and Camino Medical, at least you know they'll be there when you call.

I have been taking my two girls (now 13 & 15) to Altos Pediatrics since they were born. This is a practice of about 6 women doctors and a few nurses. All the doctors we have seen are competent, friendly and thorough and are able to "grow" with the child. We plan to keep going there until the girls go off to college. The practice is open M-F and also on Saturday morning. If you have to bring your child in due to an illness, and your normal doctor is not available, the other doctors back each other up. If you need a referral, the women at the front desk are well versed in giving referrals. On the weekends outside of normal hours, the back up is Lucile Salter Packard Hospital.
