One of the worst meals I've ever had anywhere. They used to be very good. Now they appear to be using leftovers to make meals--as in dried out chicken. Ugh. Took me hours to gt the bad taste out of my mouth!

So after reading some of the reviews of Nan Yang, it seems like some people complain that the food is not authentic enough. While it is true that I cannot vouch for the authenticity because I haven't had Burmese cuisine elsewhere, I think this place is tasty and reasonably priced.

It also seems that the menu can be quite hit or miss judging on other people's reviews, but I can't say anything about that either because I always order the same thing!

If it's possible that by luck I stumbled on the best stuff on the menu, I would not be surprised. I think this place is damn good!

This is what I always order when I'm with my family or with friends:

1. fish curry ($12?) - (it's not really curry) a big slab of juicy salmon baked in a tomato and onion sauce with coconut rice and a little serving of green salad. The salmon is so tender and moist! This gives the garlic noodles a run for its money.

2. seafood garlic noodles ($10?) - prawns, scallops, and mussels served on a bed of thick noodles in a creamy coconut, curry, and garlic sauce. sooooo gooood.

3. Curried eggplant ($10?) - I love eggplant and this has sort of a dry shrimp paste crumble on the top which I love!

I think the flavors are quite unique. There's a lot of garlic and a lot of onion, but these flavors aren't used traditionally. Mixing garlic and coconut milk, for example, is definitely not the usual way to make a sauce.

I had to estimate on those prices. For a sit down restaurant in Berkeley, I think those prices are pretty reasonable for some really great tasting food.

This place is certainly one of my favorites in Berkeley :)

This Burmese restaurant looks like any other typical restaurant that you may find in Berkeley but they have a large selection of garlic noodle creations. If you like garlic and noodle, this is the place to be. They have dishes such as the Mango Garlic Noodle which is extremely tasty and flavorful. The staff is friendly but sometimes, there may be negligence but hey, good food does not always translate to good service.

I love finding foods from different parts of the world, and you find that here at Nan Yang. It's Burmese/Myanmarese food, which is something between Chinese and Thai. You will find curries, noodles, and rice. The fun dishes are the rice combo (four different types of rice, including the most-yummy coconut rice); a green papaya salad is light, delicate and delicious; and the garlic noodles are simple to die for. They are thicker noodles with lots of toasted garlic tossed in.

Prices are reasonable.
Food is very good.

This place has a mix of chinese, vietnamese and thai influences and the food comes out delicious! It also is cooked in a more healthy manner and isn't as oil-rich as other asian restaurants. The salads are delicious and very flavorful. Ambience is great too.

Not sure what the other reviewers meant by "miniscule portions" but if you are used to the disgusting, mammoth portions at chain restaraunts, then perhaps you will not be satisified by the portions here. The portions are perfect for one person, and the flavors are bright and fresh- can't attest that they are authentic Burmese, but it's a
good value for interesting, tasty food. Try the garlic noodles with mango for an unusually delicious meal.

One of a few spots in the Bay Area devoted to Burmese food, Nan Yang showcases signature dishes that blend elements of many Asian cuisines. The brightly flavored tea leaf and ginger salads are not to be missed, and the samosas and curry…
