Great French/Vietnamese cuisine. The place is small and parking can be difficult, so best to get there early if it's a busy Friday/Saturday. The place typically turns into a kind of dance club on some weekend, usually rented out by a group, so if you prefer dinner, but not the club atmosphere, go during the weekdays (Monday - Thursday).

This restaurant is great! Usually try coming in for a Saturday lunch and try their yellow and green curry! The restaurant is situated in a nice area as well.

i've only been here once, but my experience was awesome. the staff was really friendly and the food was great. and if you are feelign brave you can even try the "snake juice." snake juice is an alcoholic beverage. i'm not too sure what exactly is in there, but if you see he bottle there are a bunch of snakes floating around in it.

Le Cheval is fantastic French/Vietnamese restaraunt. It can get pretty busy, so make reservations or go during the week. Try the lemongrass chicken, the salty prawns, or the springrolls. Bon Apetit!

Some have complained that the service at Le Cheval is bad. Not so--if the servers seem unfriendly, it is only because they are extremely efficient (though I've always found them to be polite as well). The service is extremely fast, and tag-teaming is a way of life. Really, it can be a pleasure to watch.

As for the food, they offer a wide range of Vietnamese foods, and the quality seems to be uniformly high. I especially recommend the claypot fish and the salty calimari. For a special pyromaniac thrill, get the bananas for desert. Cash and credit accepted.

PROS: Efficiency, available on-street parking
CONS: Crowds on weekend nights

Le Cheval has enjoyed accolades and hype for quite some time now. If you don't mind waiting for a table and a loud, crowded dining area, you have to try this Vietnamese restaurant. Even though it's not the most authentic, the clay pots, entrees, and specials are culinary delights. They have cheap and very fast lunch combination, perfect for the work week.

PROS: Quite tasty!
CONS: Can be a long wait for a table.

Okay, I've only gone once. But that was enough! The bowls of food must have been sitting waiting to be picked up for hours cause they were all cold and the noodles were one massive concrete-like mess. Everything tasted fishy and that ain't nice. I've heard the Walnut Creek restaurant is better but I'd rather not make the trip when there are some really excellent Vietnamese restaurants on this side of the hills!

snappy service during weekday lunches combined with a very reasonably-priced lunch menu make this a great place for business lunches.

I love Le Cheval because of one dish: the birds nest. Imagine stir-fried vegetables, chicken, shrimp, and calimari, in a great savory sauce, over a salad-bowl-sized noodle bird's nest. It's fantastic. Reminds me of the crispy noodles at the Slanted Door. Anyway, you can order this for take-out, and it's a GREAT meal after a long day. I've had some other dishes here, and they were so-so. But this dish, my friends, is fantastic.

Cons: Spare ribs...mine didn't have much meat.

This restaurant and their cuisine is the best I have found for the quality and price. I love the ginger crab when it's available and the calamari salad is excellent! I have tried clay pots at other restaurants and Le Cheval's is by far the winner! The food always comes out very quickly which is great for me as I have children who also love the food! Another treat for me and my kids is the impressive flaming bananas dessert with their yummy vanilla bean ice cream..always a crowd pleaser! The parking is usually very easy and within close walking distance. This restaurant should be a regular for those of us who enjoy different and delicious food!

Have been coming here for 15 years now, and the food has been consistently great. We always get the cube beef steak, which is tender and just on the medium side always. Other dishes I love are Singapore noodles (w/ chicken), claypot prawns, and the mussels. Drinks are funny: the Thai iced tea is kinda an alarming orange color, but good, and so's the Vietnamese coffee. Skip that soursop drink - nothing soursop in it. Could just stick with the pitcher of water they leave at your table, which is really cool. It's definitely the place to drop by for a bite if you don't feel like cooking. Casual place, good prices. Service is always punctual, food, bill, etc comes promptly, but the friendliness factor is sometimes low depending on the waitress. We've had both very friendly and brusque servers, but none rude.

When I eat at Le Cheval, I usually order barbecue pork & fried rice. It's delicious & the price is great. The restaurant is attractive, with a bar to have some drinks at if your group hasn't arrived yet. What the restaurant is lacking in is service. The waitresses speak little English, uncomfortably shove your plate in front of you, & never check on your table. That could be embarrassing if you were on a date. I've always eaten here with people I know very well, so it's not as bad. I'll sacrifice customer service for the yummy food when I'm craving it.

Unfortunately Le Cheval time has come as a long time diner at this restaurant on 7/24/2007 we had dinner there. The calamari salad was awful loaded with a slim green color curry no lemon grass at least that I could see lots of what appeared to be not properly cook calamari but the taste of the onions made it palatable. We also order the beef lemon grass dish alas no lemon grass to be found and again overpowered with a slime green curry. I think they are using a cheaper form of curry powder to reduce cost. While the beef was tender given that it had a slime green color it was not appetizing at all. Alas our favorite dish which was the red snapper in coconut milk which is usually white surrounded by large purple delicious chunks of eggplant and okra was a foul tasting breaded fish probably frozen and reheated in once again an overpowering slime green curry not the light delicate coconut milk texture we are so familiar with. When we brought this to the attention of the waiter he did nothing and when we asked to speak to the manager she eventually came over but we certainly did not feel they made any attempt to offer us another selection. Unfortunately Le CHEVAL has become a 1 star horse in a 5 star town and the chef has to cut back on that curry. Both me and my date left with grumbling stomachs not because we were still hungry but because we were both waiting for the deluge.

Le Cheval is one of my favorite restaurants! My entire family and all of my friends that I've taken there LOVE Le Cheval. I've read a couple of reviews complaining about the service. I think what they dislike is there are no servers asking you if you're doing okay or need a refill, etc. The food is served quickly all the time. Sometimes within 5 minutes!

I'll recommend a few dishes: The snapper in coconut milk, the cube beef pepper steak, and a snapper in clay pot dish.

If you're looking for a place that's affordable, great for dinner with friends / family, and perfect after a crazy day after work...this is place to go. The food is incredible, and the portions are hefty. It's probably not ideal for a romantic date, but other than that...the definite shining star in Oakland.

The food was excellent, and our food came really quickly. The servers were efficient in that they cleared our plates as soon as we were done, and had the dessert menu in hand just as we were about to ask for it. I recommend you go for dinner in a group and have each person order one item so that you can all share. Everything we ordered was divine! Our stomachs didn't feel heavy afterwards and all the items were relatively inexpensive. It was a bit crowded, but I understand why! Free Parking after 5 pm on 11th and Jefferson!

Le Cheval has really great food, I'll give that to the cook. But the service is aweful, I think due to the fact that they are so busy they care less about what the customers think or wants and needs, to the point where the manager has told me, if I don't like their service...go somewhere else. First, you never tell a customer to go somewhere else, I mean come on...just because your popular doesn't give you a reason to be rude.

The ambience is classy, and -- led to the restaurant by a group of friends -- I was afraid to check the prices on the menu. Boy, was I surprised! VERY generous portions, and nearly everything under $10. And most importantly, all seven dishes were ordered were excellent! Tender meat, crisp vegetables, and fragrant un-greasy sauces.

What else impressed me was how I felt after this big meal; happy, comfortable, and not loaded down. Indeed, I went directly to a swing dance event afterwards, full of energy.

I don't think I'd take a date here, since it was a bit loud and crazy, but I am DEFINITELY coming here again with friends!

Le Cheval is the real deal. Try the Orange flavor spicy beef or chicken. @$6 and very high quality and great portions. They also give you soup, which is homemade, unique and good. I haven't had vietnamese this good since 7.62 tracers were whizzing by my head in the Mekong Delta.

This restaurant is amazing!!! It's fun, loud, and the place to be and be seen in Oakland. The food is excellent and the service is fine. The full service bar is something you won't find at a typical Vietnamese eatz. There's a reason why you should make reservations...this place a popular by word of mouth!!! Recommended Dishes: Chicken Wings, Shrimp Rolls, Cube Beef Steak, Watercrest Salad, String Beans w/Shrimp, and for dessert...the Banana Flambe!!!

My friend and I dined at Le Cheval last Sat......The hostess and bartenders was very friendly and helpful. However, when we got to the table, our waitress was this older asian lady who didn't know how to speak english and never even gave us the specials. We ordered the five course meal, which was a very bad choice....mediocre food served hastily....Again, the service was terrible.....she basically threw the food at us. Then, she never even came back to ask if everything was okay. This place is decorated with high class, but the service was definitely low class. I felt like I was dining at a regular Pho restaurant in Chinatown.

I will never eat at this place again!!! And, to make it worse, the waiters were just hanging out at a table behind us. Something I expect at a Denny's. Not a restaurant like this.....
