OK, so you never know who your tour guide will be, but the cast of available characters is such that you won't be disappointed. This working 1880's railroad trainride and town of old is a blast for young and old alike. You'd be smart to plan your visit on a day that there's some other event going on there too -- like the Civil War reinactments, or Mountain Man days. It's quite the immersion experice. By itself the train ride up Bear Mountain and the little town are entertaining too. This place is quite the setting for the black and white film photographers too!

Be sure to: Check train departure times and get there early to have time to check out the town. Bring sunscreen and layers of clothing, some crackers to feed the ducks in the pond, and visit the restroom at the station before the train leaves -- even if you don't have to go. It's a long ride!

Insider Scoop: Thomas the Train Days are VERY CROWDED. Be sure to get there in plenty of time and bring your patience. Extra activities besides the train are available, but this place is just teeming with kids when Thomas is in town!

More Insider Scoop: FREE admission to Henry Cowell Redwoods state park next door when you WALK over across the railroad tracks. Free docent tours of the Redwood Grove Loop on weekends, and there's a great visitor's center there too! (Vice versa applies -- if you pay to park at Henry Cowell, you can go to Roaring Camp for free -- but you still have to pay for a train ride).

Roaring camp is more than a train ride. They have a nice setup at the "base camp". We went on the Easter ride. They had lots of arts and crafts at the base. At the end of the ride the kids got off for an Easter egg hunt high up in the mountains. It was a nice outing for everyone.

PROS: nice set up
CONS:

What great history and info for the kids. They get to get on a train and go into the woods - stop and have lunch up there and catch another train an hour later. You can also head down to the Santa Cruz beach boardwalk from here.

Everyone is dressed up from the early settlers time and it's just fun.

This is a great place for the whole family. We took the old fashioned steam powered locomotive train ride and had a blast. We got off at the top and had lunch and then hiked down the trail. It is also a great place to take visitors.

I'll start of by saying that I'm not even close to a train buff, but I actually found myself having an enjoyable time. Both my 9 year old and my husband breathe trains, and go to roaring camp at least once a year.
It is also a great place to take visitors. Whenever we have people visiting from Europe, it's one of the first places we take them, and continue recieving nothing but compliments.

What a great little treasure. We went here in the fall and had a wonderful time. It is a very unique experience and we will had a good time. The only negative experience were the geese in the park who attacked us when we had a bag of chips.

For the past few years we have taken the kids up for a train ride on the Thomas the Train tour.

They love the TV show and enjoy seeing Thomas on the tracks. Then we go for a ride and enjoy some food and play for the afternoon.

They love taking the train ride up into the mountains and looking around.

A fun day for all

We took my oldest on this trip when he was a bit too young (he wanted to walk on the train but you have to sit and watch the scenery) but we still had a great time. You ride in an open car train through the redwoods and stop twice (I believe) to get out and look around. It is beautiful and fun.

Roaring Camp Railroads is a great way to spend a day riding a train roundtrip from Felton to Santa Cruz. The ride takes you through Henry Cowell Redwoods State Park, the San Lorenzo River, and through a tunnel. The view is spectacular and a good choice to take a date for some fun. I paid $20 per person last year.

As a local, I've been to Roaring Camp a lot. And it bears revisiting! Not only for the trains, but for the annual special events, like the frog jumping contest around the 4th of July, the encampments and re-enactments they host, and other holiday themes.

They also have a number of fun shops, and an old tyme photo studio (with prices cheaper than the Boardwalk, too!)

A great place to take your family for an afternoon; the beautiful train ride through the redwoods is great fun; you wend your way through Santa Cruz, passing through the Boardwalk; another must stop place. A tad pricey, but a fun experience nonetheless. Be sure to check out their Civil War Reenactment on Memorial Day; truly amazing and a lot of fun for everyone.

This is the South Bay site for the annual Day Out with Thomas. I've not been then, but I've heard it's crowded and loud! But it's lots of fun every day. We took our 5 year old and 1 year old girl on the train that takes you through the woods and it talks about the history of this particular train and about some of the animals and trees/plants. It is interesting to adults and the kids are just too thrilled to be on the choo choo to care. It's a nice day out from the peninsula!

This camp is for adults and children alike. You can rent out space to have birthday parties and train rides for the kids. For the adults there is dinner, dancing under the stars, and moonlit train rides through the Santa Cruz mountains. Check out their haunted train ride at Halloween time. This camp has many options to choose from.

I thoroughly enjoyed the ride through the Santa Cruz mountains that is provided by the Roaring Camp. Very pretty, and you felt like you travelled 100 years back. They also have a summer service that will take you to the Santa Cruz BoardWalk from the woods. Absolutely a must for kids who love trains. It is kinda out of the way from Santa Cruz, but easily accessible from Scotts Valley or the 17. Kinda pricey, though, an adult ticket is about $26.

There is without a doubt no other place like this. Trains are a very important and influential part of our country's history. This rip roaring camp allows visitors to take a journey to the past and experience trains the same way people did hundreds of years ago. Little kids love trains, so this is a exciting weekend outing for them. You have a choice between riding on a beach train through the redwood forests of Santa Cruz county or taking an old fashioned steam powered locomotive. Both are fantastic rides.

This is a great place for the whole family. You can make your reservation for the train in advance. The ride takes you through the redwoods. You can even be 'Engineer for the Day' and get to drive the train! They have acres of grounds to eat a picnic. Each summer Thomas the Tank Engine visits for a couple of days. Well worth a trip.
