I have read that the Indio Animal Shelter has recently been remodeled. This is after I paid the shelter a visit. Where was the money spent? The building looks like it was built in the 1940's. It is small and overcrowded with supplies. The cattery is way too small to hold the number of cats and kittens that are there now. There aren't enough indoor/outdoor dog kennels, It seems the city bought some temporary small outdoor runs to house the over flow of dogs. This is not good when the temperature gets up to the mid 120's.I can't fault the shelter staff as the place, (except for the office, where by the way was no waiting room or seating area for visitors,) was clean. I fault the City of Indio. Unfortunately people are more incline to go to a nice facility to adopt a pet than one that is old and run down. Let's put some REAL money into the shelter. Build a building with a larger reception area and offices for the animal control officers. Include a nice kitchen area for meals and breaks along with restrooms for the staff and public. Build a separate cattery that will hold 20-30 cats and 40 kittens. Have a separate area for rabbits, iguanas, tortoises and other animals that come in.The dog runs, and cattery should be separate from the office building. One very nice thing about the grounds there was the out door get acquainted area where people can take to dog and spend quality time with it.The rating on this review is a 4 star only because the animals looked healthy and well cared for and the staff are professionals. The city of Indio council should be ashamed that they haven't put some real money into the shelter.
