This is cheap food of a VERY bad quality. I used to go to this place 2 or 3 years ago and it was OK. But now this place became terrible! The special rolls were awful - the godzilla roll and red dragon salmon rolls were disgusting and not at all what I remembered it to be. I got a stomach upset / indigestion 2 times in a row. I really wanted to make a complain to Food Inspection Agency i just don't have time to deal with this. I don't recommend this place at all - it's better to pay a little bit more somewhere else but stay safe.

I used to go to this place when I was a kid and the sushi was terrific - especially the dragon roll or the caterpillar, or the rainbow. I recently moved back to the city after a sojourn on the east coast and was quite dissatified. The special rolls were awful - the cooked salmon was disgusting and not at all what I remembered it to be. The raw fish was mushy, not whole pieces like one would expect in a roll. The one upside is that its still cheap, so I guess you get what you pay for. I can see this place being okay if you're vegan and only order vegetable rolls.

This place has decent Japanese food. Good food, cheap prices. If you can get a coupon that is often found in the coupon mailers, then it makes this place even better. The sushi is not bad for the price, but I prefer the regular food. I would recommend the chicken karaage. Also, parking and waiting is an issue on weekends.

I eat Japanese food - american style. I have had the best and the worst.... Kitaro is substance... not good, not spitting out bad - but substance. For those that wait for more than 1/2 hour, the restaurants on either side is where they should go. HOWEVER, if you're on a budget and you want to eat at Kitaro, go for the bento boxes, anything else is not worth it... 'cause again, with sushi fresh on the boats (corner) or cooked nicely at the other place I would go there. The Kitaro people are nice and hustle, but the tables are tight and the place can get noisy. Food to go is another way to get that substance as well... which is one way to avoid the wait.

Pros: Cooked items nice, bento box especially, nice people

Cons: Sushi is substance only... low level buy I think, parking is bad during rush dinner time

This restaurant is really so cheap, good service, fast to the table. Definitely the place to go when you need a quick bit to eat before the movies or off for the night on the town. Been there at least dozen times and have never been disappointed!

Bads: service, sushi, not so fresh\r\nGoods: cheap, clean, dimming environment\r\nAfter I became a member, they sends me 15% off coupons all the time. Service: The waiters gets cranky sometimes if you don't take order fast. I guess it depends on their mood at the time, and who are you dining with. I have been there many times and the services are still not improving, but what is great about that is... you tip less! Food: its nice and cheap to get a bento...but the rice is not real Japanese rice. Sushi: not a great place to go to if you want to taste some fresh sashimi. I like their dimming spot lights, its really comforting while waiting for the food to come. It can get really loud sometimes due to dining of large groups around you...the waiters do not care if you are annoyed or not, they will only seat you where theres open table.

Here, you get slightly more than you pay for. I thought they use too much breading and rice in the rolls. If you want a giant dinner for $10, go here, but if you are a sushi lover and like it fresh, stay away.

Wow, i didn't know that sushi can be so cheap and still be good. The food was great, especially at about $4 for uni. ok i think the price tag is what really shocked me. I'm used to spending about $100 for 2 at a sushi place, but here a table of 4 came under 80. not a date place, but defineately a hang out place.

For the price you pay, sushi at Kitaro isn't that bad. Try the rock n roll and their bento box dinners. Parking is pretty difficult in this area as there are loads of restaurants, however, there's a metered parking lot across the street (but beware that can get packed too).

Unfortunately, the food at Kitaro has really gotten worse. The fish is not sushi quality and it is not cut properly. It is cheap though, so if that is what you want........ I decided to try the new Japanese restaurant a couple of doors away (Cocoro) and it was very good. It is an authentic Japanese restaurant with a sushi bar. It cost a bit more, but the fish is fresh and they have actual sushi chefs. Kitaro needs to buy better quality fish if they continue to serve sushi!

I am a true sushi fanatic! I have tried sushi all over the US and I must admit that considering its indecently cheap prices Kitaro is undeniably the best. Pound for pound, this sushi beats all of them! I tried it all, the seaweed salad - $1 plate, fresh and crispy, baked mussels - $2 plate, creamy, delicious and worth ruining your diet for, fresh tuna and avocado rolls - $1.50 for a plate of 4, yummy, I even tried the ikura, salmon roe, which was pretty great considering I paid $2 for 2 rolls brimming with tasty golden salmon caviar that would have cost me $5-7 anywhere else. Go early, I did and I beat the rush and got a great little spot immediately. Just don't go if you're on a diet, you cannot resist the cheap price. I paid $15 for a feast that usually costs me $40 + tip! Awesome! I definitely recommend it and I will be taking all my visitors on a budget there to pig out!

i went there on saturday for lunch.\r\n\r\ni chose a lunch plate with chiken teriyaki and veggie and shrimp tempura.\r\n\r\nThe plate was big, but it didn't have the ""japanese style"" although it IS the J-restaurant.\r\n\r\nthe decroration was nice and fully furnished.\r\n\r\ngood serivce and a little crowed.\r\n\r\ni recommended the lunch plates. Udon is not referred.\r\n\r\ni prefered to have noodles instead of udon over there.\r\n\r\nif u go to japan town or u know the cooks are REAL japanese, then choose Udon

If a fast, cheap sushi meal is what you seek, you would be hard pressed to do better than Kitaro. The quality is a half notch above what you might find at a high end grocery store but overall it is enjoyable food as long as you set your expectations accordingly. Large eaters may even want to consider ordering two set dinners. With prices barely above $10 on anything on the menu including full set dinners, you can afford to gorge yourself silly at Kitaro.

This is one of those places that you get what you pay for. We were excited by the reasonably priced Japanese food, but the quality was poor. I ordered vegtarian sushi and could not finish it....it just didn't taste right. My husband's seafood rolls were OK. The tempura was average and gioza were below average. I would save up a little and spend a little more for a decent kappa maki roll....I didn't think you could screw those up.

This place has a limited sushi menu, but the sushi is somehwat above average, and the prices are really really chep. It is in a boring area of town, but there are so many BAD sushi places in the city. This is the best tasting cheap sushi restaraunt in town. Lunch boxes, shashimi and nigiri are very decent, and a few rolls are quite decent as well. Sashimi appetizer for 8 bucks, rainbow roll for 5, ....how can you go wrong? Decent service, clean place, no wait, not crowded, etc.

This is definitely cheap japanese food but not very good in terms of quality. The sashimi came out looking old and the sushi looked like it had been sitting for a long time. Probably will not go back unless really broke.

Whenever my group of friends get together to go eat lunch and is in the mood for some great Japanese food, we don't even have to think about where to go. Having been there so many times we practically memorized the menu, we had never been let down once. The service, while not also speedy, is okay. But the food is wonderful and even more lovely is the price. Compared to other numerous sushi joints in San Francisco, Kitaro is in the lower priced portion. The place is almost always full so be sure to get there a bit earlier before the afternoon rush. Parking can be a pain, especially since it is located on Geary st. so park your car on Anza or Balboa if you want to have a parking spot.

PROS: great food
CONS: parking is a headache.

Basically you get what you pay for. If you want cheap eats, espcially cheap sushi, cheap bento boxes. I normally come here when I just want some cheap japanese food. They're quality of fish is just not good, that is why I get the non raw items. Their tempura, tonkatsu, chicken karrage is pretty good tho. I don't know if you can mess up on deep fried food. Their proportions are also very big, so it fills you up good. If you live in the neighborhood, they have coupons for sushi plates, I order those when I don't want to cook and want cheap fast eats.

I can't say enough good things about Kitaro. It's fantastic. It's prices are unbelievably low. Truly unbelievably. The first time you go in you will not believe how cheap this sushi is. It almost makes you nervous. Don't be. The place is always packed and they are constantly selling sushi, so it's always fresh. They have some interesting rolls you don't see at other sushi joints, using ingredients like jalapeno peppers.

The food here is prepared and brought to your table very quickly. My friends and I always order extra because it seems like everyone here always has a full table. The fish tastes like its come right from the sea and the rest of the ingredients are also just as fresh. It can get a bit claustrophobic here because the place is small and it is popular with all sorts of ages. A good tip is to wait outside to avoid blocking the wait staff and the entrance.

Not long ago, I used to rave about this restaurant... about how affordable this place was and how you get what you pay for, sometimes more. The food was always good here, until recently. It went from good to so-so. They don't even give you california roll as a part of your dinner special anymore. I was obviously disappointed. This place still gets busy, so there is a wait during busy hours. The only good thing about this place is that it still remains affordable. Overall, its an average place to get alright sushi.\n

Good place for cheap sushi, but you get what you pay for. The rice was a little rougher than I expect in sushi rolls and the sashimi was sliced wide, but thin, and didn't seem to be the best quality. The salmon on the pink dragon roll was overcooked and dry. If you mind your wallet more than your taste buds though, this place is acceptable.

Without a doubt, the reason that people constantly go to Kitaro is the fairly cheap price. However, the price is not any lower than Fujiyama-ya on Noriega. Rather, the food is much lower in quality the Fujiyama-ya. I ordered a rainbow roll, while my friend ordered a Pink Salmon Roll. A sashimi combination was also ordered. The assorted fish on the rainbow roll was odd tasting, especially the albacore. The Pink Salmon Roll also seemed microwaved. The sashimi tasted very nast.

Kitaro is targeted more towards college students who dine out with their friends on a weekend. Tables are very tight and you don't have much privacy to share. Waiters are pretty attentive. The food portions are reasonably matched the price. I like the kirayaki chicken but it seems smaller everytime I go back. If you go there on a weekend, you might have to wait at least 30min. Oh yeah, dont order nigiri sushi. It tastes funny.

Kitaro is dirt cheap - the avg price is $2 for 2 pieces of nigiri. That being said, there are a lot of cons to going there. The fish is so-so quality (i wouldn't go back if it wasn't so cheap), theres ALWAYS a wait and they don't take reservations, the place is pretty small (a sign says max capacity is 49 people), and the wait staff obviously want you to get the hell out asap so they can seat more people. BUT, there's a lot to be said for cheap sushi - the rolls have a lot of rice packed onto to them, so they're much bigger than average, and there's some slightly odd taste to the sashimi.

This may be one of the cheapest sushi places around... but it's insanely packed and the sashimi is nasty as hell. So if you stick to the cooked stuff, you're fine.

After reading some of the other reviews, you know why they are able to serve so quickly, or why the pink dragon roll was in the microwave? It's because they really are like a Costco quality sushi. They pre-make all their rolls just like the stuff you buy at Costco or Safeway. If the quality of Kitaro suits your needs, more power to you. But don't confuse the quality here for good stuff. If you ask me, order take-out, because that's the quality you're getting. It'll taste better in front of the TV.\n

Pros: Cheap, cheap, cheap

Cons: Costco quality, but, people think this is , real/good sushi

.

The prices are cheap but you get what you pay for. If you've eaten quality and fresh sushi elsewhere, then you can definitely taste the difference here. The sushi is edible, but I'd rather spend my money elsewhere.

You got what you pay for. Cheap $$$ but the sushi sucks. It's not a fine dinning restaurant, so the service is understandable.

Pros: cheap price, ok service, f

Cons: food quality

The special sushi rolls were huge and very filling. i probably could have gotten by w/ ordering just two rolls. they were relatively creative and tasty. People complain about the service, but i spilled a cup of tea and they were right on it, providing me w/ more napkins and wiping it from the floor. Our table kept asking for more ginger and they also provided that. It was a busy saturday nite, but it was a cute, cheap place to eat at.
