GATEWAY ANIMAL HOSPITAL KILLED MY CAT!!!  1 Star Rating - Unsatisfactory

Gateway Animal Hospital KILLED my cat. Period. I had four cats, and I went to Gateway for many years. I thought they were professional. I brought Wolfie in because he was losing weight and getting on in years. The doctor suspected a tumor and I agreed to leave him so he could get checked out. Two hours later they called me at work and told me to come in right away because HIS FUR CAME OFF!!!! When I get there he's completely wrapped in gauze all around his neck, and the FUR IS COMPLETELY OFF ALL AROUND HIS NECK AND CHEST!!! BARE SKIN!!! Now I put him in the carrier that morning myself. There was nothing wrong or compromised with his skin. I believe that they tried to pull him out of the carrier or cage and pulled so hard they ripped his fur off. I was completely in shock. I kept asking "How could this happen" and they all looked so sad and accepting "These things just happen, who can say?'" I think the kicker is that they said "Wolfie's a fighter, let's give him overnight and see how he's doing" And I agreed. So of course when I got there the next morning, they told me I should put him down. Well I should have put him down right away! He didn't deserve a night of suffering! But I trusted them to do what was right. I was DEAD WRONG. I blame myself for not protecting Wolfie by realizing that with a 3-4 in swath of fur around his neck removed, there was not going to be a happy ending. Wolfie said it best when he tried to bite my nose as I was saying good-by. I'm ashamed to say that I paid my bill, and took my poor kitty home for a proper burial. I was too out of my mind with grief and shock to register the appropriate anger. But I never ever will set foot in that place again, and I advise you to do the same. Someone, brutally removed my cat from his cage and ripped his fur off. Explain that if you can. I say GATEWAY ANIMAL HOSPITAL are murderers.

Gateway is Great for Me  4 Star Rating - Very good

I've taken my dogs to be boarded at Gateway as well as had major surgery there for one of my dogs. Gateway is the only place where I can board my dogs and when they come home, they are "normal". They aren't all freaked out and they don't follow me around the house for days afterward. Also, Dr. V. saved my older dog's life. He's 13 and last March, they operated to remove a tumor on his spleen (they removed the entire thing...tumor as well as spleen). Well, it's now seven months later and he's like a new little man! They definitely saved his life. They've also helped him with ear infections and they helped my younger dog get over some kind of flu bug. All in all, I really appreciate Gateway for helping my pups at a reasonable price. Yes, they are always PACKED and you have to wait awhile, but I'd prefer that over a vet who was empty and had no patients. I do believe that they make mistakes but if you ask before they do any procedures, you can make yourself more knowledgeable.

Gateway Animal Hospital - My choice for over 20 years!!  4 Star Rating - Very good

I have taken pet cats, dogs and birds to this hospital for more than 20 years. I have also take feral cats for spay/neuter and release back into the community. At all times my animals were given excellent treatment. I have found the staff to be very professional.
Dr. Jimmerson treats most of my animals and I find him very knowledgeable and very compassionate. He and I have a similar philosophy about the responsibility pet owners have toward their pets.
He has pulled several of my animals through serious illnesses and injuries. When my animals are old and ill, Dr. J is always very upfront with me about their chances for any quality of life. If an animal has to be euthanized, I always stay in the room with my pet to ease him through death.
I recommend Gateway to all my friends. There are several doctors to choose from. Take the time to find the right one for you and your pet.

They almost killed my dog.  1 Star Rating - Unsatisfactory

I took my pet here for almost a year.
My dog had a somewhat common skin condition (demodex) yet the doctors seemed particularly unknowledgable. One doctor would recommend treatment 'a', another treatment 'b', while still another turned to me, flabbergasted, and said 'I'm not sure, what do YOU think it is?'
Regardless it never seemed to get any better, though they would try to convince me otherwise:
'Oh you're dogs stomach is looking fine'
'I thought he had Demodex (skin disease)'
'Oh yeah, yeah thats right, yeah thats looking better'
Well when it came time to prescribe medicine they &^*$%!-ed up and prescribed him 10 TIMES the normal dose. Being a small dog this was toxic. He walked around the house like a zombie bumping into walls for 2 days. When we called the vet to confirm everything they said it was 'Fine just fine'. A call to another vet AND a little research on the net revealed thier mistake, that the medicine in larger doses is HIGHLY TOXIC. When we called them about our findings and how they almost killed our pet, the reply was flippant 'well yeah then give him less then'.
In addition they were careless on other things as well. Whenever he got his nails clipped they were always dripping blood. Not too mention they would drag my dog by the neck with a rope to return him to me (fyi he has no behaivor issues and can walk fine).
IF YOU LOVE YOUR PET AVOID GATEWAY ANIMAL HOSPITAL.

Gateway Kills pets.  1 Star Rating - Unsatisfactory

I just watched a news report on KCBS about a man named Godofredo Escobar who took his 2 1/2 year old dog "Bear" for a routine rabies shot. The vet instead proceeded to euthanize the dog without any indication he was doing so, all while Godofredo watched on. After Godofredo's dog was dead the hospital commented to him that "you could always get annother dog." A letter from the hospital's insurance agency offers to only repay "...the cost of the pet and the resonable expenses incurred as a result of the accident."

Dr. Jimmerson is the best!  4 Star Rating - Very good

The staff at Gateway is kind and caring. The costs are reasonable and the doctors are compasionate and care about their patients and their owners. When my cat was diagnosed with renal failure Dr. Jimmerson did everything possible to keep him going without sacrificing his quality of life. When it was time to face the end he stood with us and helped us through a very sad experience. I wouldn't trust my cats to anyone else. I always go with them to the examining room and have been in the various treatment rooms many times.

PROS: Staff, cost
CONS: Parking

Gateway Animal Hospital  4 Star Rating - Very good

This place may be tiny on the outside but on the inside its very nice and clean and they do an excellent job.. The prices here are a bit lower than average and all the vets and employees here were very friendly and even admiring my dog, making us feel special and at home. They're very smart about animals and they give GREAT advice about how to take care of my doggy..

Low Prices; good for exotic animals-not my first choice  3 Star Rating - Satisfactory

Many years ago I was recommended to this animal hospital for a rescue dog I had adopted. He needed to be neutered and needed eye surgery for a genetic condition. They offered reduced prices for rescue dogs, so I drove out to glendale from Venice for that reason.

Their prices are very low and they do take exotic pets. If these are your priorities I'd recommend them. However, they take the animals in the back, so you can't see what is going on, or support your pet if that is what you wish to do.

One time I heard the vet screaming at my dog in the backroom, but he denied it when I asked him about it. My dog at that time was a chow, but he was very reserved, loving and was not a biter or a problem at all.

That was the last time I went there.

PROS: Help exotic animals, reasonably priced, okay for routine care
CONS: I'd look elsewhere for any serious problems

This is a solid low-cost veterinary clinic. We take all of our rescues here for spay / neuter procedures (they accept vouchers) and vaccinations. You do not receive the individual attention that you get at some other vets, and you generally cannot accompany your pet to be examined. It's a great economical choice for basic vet services, but I would not recommend it for complex health issues that might require more individual attention or specialists.
