Ratings_icons Why the hype about this place?!

Kylie S.

We were recommended to order the ostrich. I recently had ostrich at the Hitching Post (made famous in the movie "Sideways") and it was to die for. Couldn't wait to try more. It was bland, overcooked and a bit tough. This was their signature dish? Rest of food was good, but we've had better. Expensive too... but the worst was the service.

I would NOT recommend this place.

Ratings_icons Great service, great food, great ambiance!

Melissa A.

My husband, my mother, and I ate at Chateau Chang on Saturday night. It was wonderful! My mother ordered the Surf and Turf (King Crab legs and Filet Mignon), my husband got the Cashew Shrimp, and I got the Lobster Thermidor. All were absolutely delicious and perfectly cooked. The Lobster Thermidor was a huge helping, and oh so rich! I shouldn't have eaten the whole thing, but I couldn't help myself! My mom's filet mignon was perfect, and her king crab came with the shell already cut, so no blood was let opening up the legs. The Cashew Shrimp was superb - an extremely generous amount of shrimp and cashews served in a delightfully sweet, smoky sauce.

The service was exceptional. Both the veteran waitress and the new waitress being trained were friendly and helpful.

The atmosphere was also great...soothing music, contemporary decor, comfortable chairs, and candlelight.

We thoroughly enjoyed our visit!

Ratings_icons Best Filet Mignon I've ever had

Vera M.

I have been dinning at Chateau Chang for years and have only ever had the greatest food and service around. The seafood is outstanding,as are the Steaks. The Fillet Mignon is the best I've ever had. Reservations are always a good Idea since they often host private parties. Even on slow nights I always call ahead to let them know I'm coming.

I've eaten here many times. The food is unique and is generally quite good. However, on one occasion, the waitress told me the dish I wanted (I think it was mahi mahi) was terrible and I should choose something else. I appreciated her honesty but wondered why it was on the menu.

The atmosphere looks like something you'd see on a 70's cruise ship but I have always been willing to overlook that because I enjoyed the food. I've been there many a Friday and Saturday night during prime dinner hours when we were literally the only people in the place. I always thought it was a shame. Always left a huge tip because we felt sorry for the staff.

Last night we went in and were at first pleasantly surprised to see the place about half full. The the hostess asked if we had reservations and when we told her we didn't, she told us, I kid you not, that they were too busy to serve us and to go away. She said they'd turned away quite a few people already. I don't know how she expected me to know I needed a reservation (it was not a holiday) when I've been the only person in there so many nights before. So I "went away" and won't be back. Especially now that I can get escargot at the World Market and make my own!

Ratings_icons Most Delicious Food Ever!

Kathie T.

Chateau Changs is the the nicest most romantic dinner house in the High Desert. Our family and Friends have dined at Chateaus over the last 20 years. Friends of ours drive up from the coast just to eat here. The food is excellent, we've never had a dish served that wasn't absolutely delicious. We've dined at a lot of fine dinner houses throughout California and this one by far is our favorite. You've got to dine at Chateaus to appreciate the art of fine dining. After you are seated they inform you of the "special dishes" they offer you for the day, then they bring your beverages and your menues to view. Kathie T.

Ratings_icons Not sure why people recommend

The food was okay.... not great and certainly not worth the price. We have had much better meals at much lower prices elsewhere. The service was TERRIBLE. Our waitress seemed more interested in telling us about herself than keeping us happy. She made a few mistakes and did not seem to care. Shrugged it off like we shouldn't worry about it. Quite an idiot really.

PROS: We were able to sit right away without reservations
CONS: overpriced for mediocre food... terrible service.

Ratings_icons Not impressed

Pam H.

My food was awful (they used PROCESSED cheese on a $40 dish). I sent it back and they would not take it off the bill. They claimed that I had eaten half of it though I had only 2 bites. The first to try it and the second to see if it was really that bad (it was). All I could taste was the plastic flavor of the processed cheese. Yuck! The waitress argues with me that it was real cheese while I'm looking at the plastic bubble on my plate. So finally the owner brings out the cheese to prove it to me.... right on the label it says "processed cheese". She claims she doesn't know the difference between the two. Yeah right! Then the waitress gives us the check and doesn't tell us that the dish has NOT been taken off thinking that we won't notice. When we call her on it she says they will only take half off because I had eaten some if it (huh?!?) I told her I would not pay for something that tasted bad. I heard them talking in the kitchen so I stood outside kitchen door to hear what they were saying. They were not very nice and when they realized that I was out there (I let them know so they knew that they couldn't lie) I was cussed at.....told to get the "F" out. I am not lying! Unbelievable. DO NOT GIVE THIS PLACE YOUR BUSINESS!!!!!!

PROS: no wait... but that's no surprise
CONS: Hig prices for low quality food and to be cussed at.

Ratings_icons Very Nice

Shane H. | insider_expert Insider Expert | Rank: 7,839

I took my wife her birthday and we didn't quite know what to expect. The food is great. It is a dressy place and we felt really underdressed. It is small, but so nice. The prices are a little high, but the food makes you know why it is priced that way.

Ratings_icons Verbal Menus!

We went here several years ago and the waitress told us the menu instead of bringing menus. The prices were high. I did order a drink and it tasted awful! We ended up leaving.
