Tough Brisket, A sin in it self, this place produces truly inedible food and this is hard to do. Tough Brisket, Sour and mushy potato salad, A sauce that resembles hot red motor oil paste. Some of the rudest and most unprofessional service in the HISTORY of food service. Do your self a favour and do not eat here ever.

Pros: Nothing

It's a shame the management of this place doesn't do something about their staff - wait and kitchen. If they had consistently good food (I personally don't find the portions large except for the platters, cause you have to buy things individually) and better trained staff, trained to be more efficient and courteous - the place would be looking to expand instead of being half empty. It was doing quite well 8 yrs ago when I first started eating here. I'd go for the great lounge in the back - some amazing performers are to be found at Q's, and it's a comfortable setting too. I eat when there just 'cause the smell of BBQ gets to me every time.

Pros: good sauce and desserts

Cons: never consistent, and poor service

The food here is so good! I love the potato salad and links! The staff is friendly. The prices are a bit high but the portions are huge! I love the sauce and am so happy that you can buy at the grocery stores now!

Over the years Everett and Jones has not maintained consistency, which is unfortunate. My experience there the other night was not pleasant. The service was slow, the food was not good at all; soggy greens, cold BBQ, and hard cornbread. I am NOT exaggerating when I describe the food. All I can say is that I was thoroughly disappointed and will not go back.

People raved about this bbq joint and I have no idea why! Service is awful, takes forever to get acknowledged and seated, the waitress seem like she would rather be anywhere but there and the food is semi-warm when you finally get your food. The bbq itself is OK....rather eat bbq we cue up at home than this place. The sides, i.e. corn bread, beans, potato salad, etc....is OK....I would say Whole Foods or Safeway deli sides are better than theirs! Overall, not worth it. We tried it once for the sake of all the raves and the raves were definatley over rated!

Pros: casual

Cons: lacks service and food is just ok and parking is limited

you might as well try it at least once. It's a historic Oakland landmark, but I suggest not going on an emptry stomach or at least bring some snacks to munch on before you actually get to eat your food which could be a very long wait. I normally give the benefit of the doubt to resaurants, but when the services is consistently horrible then it's just time to stop. I've experienced it all there: long wait to be seated, long wait to get a waiter/waitress, long wait for water, long wait for drinks, long wait to order food, long wait for food, long wait to get my check and get the hell out of there, you pretty much get the picture. The food is ok, but there are definately other places that are just as tasty, but with much better service. And to echo some other reviews, cold food? check. Wrong orders? check, I even tried to call in and order some food for pickup and was on hold for like 15 minutes, this wasn't a busy Friday night, it was Tueday at like 9pm. It's not just me either, everyone i have ever brougtht there thought it was the worst service they have ever received. They need to fire the manager and all the staff that work there.

Pros: If you get your food then it's worth trying out.

Cons: Service is THE worst! How do you go to a restaruant and feel like your being punished by being ignored for eating at there establishment. Food will likely get there cold, water will likely be warm.

I heard many great things about this place so I finally went to try it with 2 of my friends. All of us were a bit disappointed. We ordered the Four-Way combo, so we can sample all their BBQ meats (chicken, links, ribs and brisket). It was the perfect amount of food for the 3 of us. The portions are pretty good. The combo cost about $26. It came with 2 sides and 2 corn muffins. I didn't like the links, but the brisket, ribs and chicken was not bad. I expected WAY more, since I've heard many great reviews. I had better ribs at Tony Roma's and Texas Roadhouse. The cornbread was the best part of the meal for me. The 2 sides we got were candied yams and potato salad. The yams were great and the potato salad was average. The service was average just like our overall experience. We don't plan on going back, but we didn't regret going. I would say go try it but don't expect too much.

I had the bbq chicken, beef brisket, beef links, and pork ribs. They were all tasty, but nothing spectacular. They do give you a lot of meat though, very big portions. For side dishes, I had the potato salad, candied yams, and corn bread. The candied yams were so good, almost the best part of the meal. The rest of the sides were average. Overall you do get your bang for you buck, and it is a fun atmosphere.

I have been going to E&J and the other BBQ joints in the East Bay for over ten years. Service at Jack London has gone from indifferent to surly and incompetent. The ribs are usually undercooked and tough, unfortunately, only occasionally returning to their former glory.

Our last visit was the last straw, sadly. After waiting 1.5 hours we were seated and told it would be ANOTHER 45 minutes to get any food. We got up and left, since earlier statements made to us about the wait had been wrong and the server lied about not ignoring us for 20 minutes. They really have no respect for their customers. Perhaps with their apparent popularity they don't have to care, but I won't go again.

The ribs aren't that good. Go to Doug's or KC's where you'll be appreciated and enjoy your meal.

Pros: Funky Atmosphere

Cons: Poor Food, Terrible Service, Expensive

waited too long for pre cooked food, delivered cold, wrong order taking, waitress looked and acted like she would rather be sleeping, and the bill was rushed. Hated it!
Advise doing take out where you can watch the kitchen prepare it and bag it not prepare it to sit for 30 min waiting on the waitress to bring it out. They need to fire everyone including the manager and start over with people who actually have some experience.

We have heard the hype plus coverage on tv about this place so we decided to eat there before watching concert at Yoshis. This is our first time so we decided to get the combination plate to try out different meats. We really enjoyed all the meat but the ribs definitely iareoutstanding. The side dishes are all dissapointing. The waiters are so unfriendly and uncaring. If you can ignore bad service and side dishes then the ribs are worth it.

... the food was very flavorful. If you are looking to dine in an atmosphere with jazz and blues, and a bit of country ambiance of outdoor cooking. This is the place to be. The music added to the southern country food. The disappointing part was the food arrived cold. Also we waited 10 minutes before anyone came to assist us. After we were acknowledged we waited an additional 15 minutes to be seated while there were tables empty, but needed to be cleaned. We waited so long because we just flew in from out of the town, it was late, we did not know where else to go that was open 11 at night. Beside that, the music sounded good and the smokey aroma smelled good.

This place has hype, but for the bad, lazy, uncaring service...SKIP IT! It's not that the wait staff is doing it on purpose, I just think that's how they are...you know what I mean? Sat us down after 20 minute wait at the door, no menu, asked for high chair, never came, said forget it by the time food came. They all look lazy and tired of being there. Not one of the people there is a ball of fire. TYPICAL

Went in a huge group, accomodating but slow service, gave us our food at random intervals so that about half of us watched the other half eat for a while. Side dishes were given in little cups. Sweet potato side dishes were good! BBQ was tender but nothing special. While in the bathroom, a server cursed under her breath! I was shocked at this.

There is no doubt that Everett & Jones know how to do BBQ right: Their sauce is a bit milder than I expected, but quite tasty, and the meat is of good quality and prepared well.

That being said, the service that our party of four received was inexcusably poor. Our order was taken promptly, but it was a full hour and fifteen minutes from when we ordered until our food arrived. Our waitress did not warn us about this wait, did not explain it, and did not apologize for it when the food was finally served. I would like to think that my standards for restaurant service are not high, but that was just too much. I won't be back.

I am from the south and I have to say - E&J knows how to bbq...but they don't know how to provide quality service. I have tried many bbq restaurants in the bay area and this was the ONLY spot that I left satisfied that I had good bbq...so, I put up with the service to curb my hankering for que. Go when its less busy and you will be better off ... the sauce is really good too.

This Sunday, we went to Everett & Jones for lunch. We asked to be seated outside & the table had a wet bench and large pieces of cornbread were on the seat. Fifteen minutes later a young girl w/blue hair brought our water and asked if wanted to order drinks? We asked to see a drink menu to order from the bar and she informed us she could only serve us no alcoholic beverages. The drink menu nor did any server ever come and we had been waiting for over thirty minutes. Finally, we notified the hostess and she had the audacity to ask who our sever was? Sigh! The hostess said she would send someone right out which in Everett & Jones language means NEVER! We waited another ten minutes before out table decided to leave because we had to have some pride!

This is the kind of food you crave. The service is bad enough to dispell that craving. I waited for over an hour to get my food and it never arrived. I had to get up and leave which is something I haven't done in many years. Coincidently I wasn't the only one who left as my waiter left the restaurant halfway through this debacle and never returned. My party was not the only one experiencing terrible service. Every table in my area was not being well attended to and all the patrons looked annoyed. I love the food but won't go back until there are big changes in how they treat thier customers. They're not the only game in town and should remember that.

This place has great bbq ribs! They're cornbread is good, not dry. The service is great. Food is reasonably priced. Good size portions. Great for take out, esp the family meal (serves 4).

Hell yeah! Everrett and Jones in Jack London Square is so fun. They have live music. They have some microbrewed beer you'll never find anywhere. There a couple good BBQ spots in Oaktown and this is one of the top contenders, maybe the best according to some. The greens are out of this world. They serve cornbread with their meals.

If you are looking for good southern style barbeque and some good soul and jazz, this place is a must. Located in Jack London Square in Downtown Oakland, and there are two parking garages nearby. The place is in a safe area of Oakland and I usually see police cars in the square. Dorothy, the owner a spirited lady is usually there. The crowd is friendly and is there to have some fun and listen to good music. Theres a small stage and the live music is just fabulous. The food is great too! A must go place. I love it!

I'm not a big fan of BBQ Ribs, but ever since tryin' out Everett and Jones, I don't think any place could be better. The corn bread is GRUB!!!! The BEST corn bread EVER! Whenever I eat at a BBQ joint, I'm always comparing the ribs to Everett and Jones. We ordered a SLAB of ribs for the 4 of us and we had so much left overs. Great for your money!

Good meat consistently well cooked puts Everett and Jones 3/4 of the way to the top of barbeque mountain. And its hard not to root for this local and successful black-woman-owned Oakland eatery duking it out in Jack London Square with the likes of Friday's and Tony Romas. But politics aside, E&J's barbeque sauce, glistening with high fructose corn syrup is a sad backward stagger. Add to that the clumsy trip-and-fall of unpalatable phony lemonade made with a syrup mix rather than real lemon juice and E&J comes crashing down the mountainside. Perhaps E&J suffers from being the spoiled darling of well-wishing local rib eaters, too self-satisfied by the adoration of fans to review itself critically. Thats too bad. She could be beating her breast, uttering her war cry from the summit, challenging all comers, instead of limping through the foothills, hobbled by mediocrity.

Delicious sauce made from scratch finishes off great tasting bbq. The "Slab" is the best value for a few friends, serving up a full platter of ribs. Other lunch and dinner items are a bit pricey, but worth it. Great atmosphere, and definitely order the lemonade, served in jars. The location is great, just across the street from Jack London Square. They also have several other take out locations, including Berkeley.
