It's difficult to find a good child therapist. My son has been seen by four different counselors. All with different opinions (of course, uh so frustrating for a parent). I believe that Child Psychological Center offers great services. I thought my son might have a learning disability or ADHD. So, I had him tested at various clinics and came up with 3 different diagnoses. I went to Child Psychological Center for a second opinion. They focused on our family before jumping to a quick diagnosis. With some changes at home, he has greatly improved his behavior. We went from an out-of-control 4 year old to a normal child. It turns out I had to change my parenting in order for my son to behave. It was hard at first, but it has made all the difference. I strongly agree with the other recommendations. My wife and I used the clinic for Child Counseling and Parent Training.
PROS: Useful Advice, Offer Many Different Programs, Local to the 210 Freeway
CONS: It took 2 weeks to get my first appointment due to my work schedule
I, like many mothers, was in denial about my child's Speech Delays. I had a difficult time accepting that my baby had different learning needs. I kept wanting to believe that he would eventually talk. But that day never came. A speech therapist referred me to Regina Granados, PsyD. for counseling. I am so glad that I called. I have learned better parenting skills and am no longer as depressed about my child's needs. I've begun to learn Sign Language, which has greatly helped my son. We've moved from daily tantrums to actual communication. I wish I had begun therapy with Child Psychological Center sooner. I am very happy with their approach. I'm going to begin Floortime services with another therapist at the agency soon. Hopefully that will further improve my child's speech skills.
PROS: Family Focused, Motivating Therapists, Know Sign Language, Not Pushy
CONS: They don't accept HMO insurance.
Child Psychological Center has proven to be an outstanding agency. They work with children who are typically developing and those with Autism and other disabilities. The staff have a great understanding of most behavioral programs for Autism. I know several families who have been very happy with their Discrete Trial, Applied Behavior Analysis, and TEACCH programs. The agency seems to really care about its clients. They take time to explain their approach to parents. They provide lots of Visual Supports (e.g., Behavior Charts, Picture Schedules, Reward Systems). I believe they work in both the home and school (but don't quote me on that). They also counsel parents who have recently had their child diagnosed with Autism. They have offices in Pasadena and Montebello, although, they work in-home throughout Los Angeles County. Tell them Sara referred you.
PROS: Autism, ABA, Applied Behavior Analysis, Discrete Trial, Psychologists, MFT
CONS: They don't offer services on Weekends, Except Counseling on Sat
Child Psychological Center has the VERY BEST therapists and staff. The therapists were caring and very skilled with children. They took the time to explain their techniques and made sure that I felt supported. I have learned so much about my parenting approach and my daughter. They also work with my nephew who has Autism. I can't recommend them enough.
PROS:
CONS: A little pricey, but well worth the money. The agency does not accept private health insurance.
