Sports & Recreation
Shihan John McCullough runs the Palo Alto branch located at Cubberley Community Center (side room next to gyms), 4000 Middlefield Road (between San Antonio & Charleston) and does an outstanding job of preparing young kids in martial arts. My son and daughter both went here for years, participated in national karate tournaments (AAAU) and won because of John's way of teaching them to focus and learn. He's very good with young children (my son started at 4 years) and is able to explain to their parents as well.
The San Jose CKA is run by Kyoshi Jim Mather, another wonderful teacher with an excellent rapport with kids. Since my kids did most of their training in Palo Alto, we only saw Kyoshi Mather during tournaments and advanced training. We respect his ability and teaching as much as Shihan McCullough's.
Both schools teach the Shotokan (Okinawan) branch of karate. Palo Alto branch offers discounts for multiple family members and Krav Maga (an Israeli self-defense system) for adults and teens.
