Liberty Cafe is a great little restaurant on Cortland. I have been there for both brunch and dinner and have always enjoyed my meals.

There is a small cottage in the back with a great bakery that serves as a wine bar on some evenings. Sit out in the patio, eat some good food and drink some wine.

The Liberty Cafe is a great place for an intimate breakfast with your partner. I especially like their bacon and baked goods. My girlfriend even ordered me their famous banana cream pie for my birthday. Loved IT!

I had dinner there for the Thanksgiving weekend. Food was not as good as before. The only reason I gave 3 stars was the waitress.

Pros: waitress

Cons: food (taste & presentation)

My aunt Cathie is the owner of this fine little resturant. She is a wonderful cook, and deserves creadit for all she does. I hope people enjoy this fine establishment. I have eaten there in 2000, and was highly impressed by the skill given to the meals.

I just visited Liberty Cafe last Sunday and found it to be awful enough to search out a site to write a review. I am a cook and a lover of food, especially breakfast food, and found the Liberty Cafe profoundly disappointing. There was a wait, which is to be expected on a Sunday morning, but we weren't even offered coffee for another 10 minutes after we were seated. The waitress, who was desperately trying to please and miserably failing, was flighty and seemed to serving the whole restaurant herself. She completely forgot my boyfriend's order and we had to practically get up out of our seats to get a refill of coffee. The worst was that I ordered eggs benedict, a brunch staple, and the eggs were nearly hard-boiled inside. After bringing this to her attention, she took the plate to kitchen, scaped off the eggs, and gave me back the same plate. A few minutes later, she brought me another egg in a cup. Worst of all, brunch for 5 with tip and without champagne, came to over $80. Acceptable for a good meal, but completely outrageous for an awful one. My advice, go to Savor on 24th Street, or even Welcome Home on Castro St.

Liberty Cafe is like that standby outfit you have in your closet that is great for all occasions and makes you feel like a million bucks every time you wear it.

My husband always goes for the potpie. Both the vegetarian and chicken options are incredibly well done and chock full of flavorful, fresh ingredients - served piping hot in a bowl you could swim in!

I enjoy looking through the menu to see what's new each month. From skirt steak to lamb to salmon -everything I have had has been beautifully executed and delicious. I clean my plate every time!

The staff is knowlegable about food and wine and they take great pride in providing diners with a memorable experience. Liberty Cafe is the kind of place you can take a friend to catch up on life or take out of town guests for a little treat in a part of San Francisco tourists rarely see (which is unfortunate because it's such a great neighborhood!)

Here's a tip for light eaters: Order one of their delicious salads and get the pizza of the month - you won't regret it!

Save room for dessert because there's always some kind of house made ice cream... my favorite was a mint chocolate chip a few months back (they used REAL mint!).

Cons: small restaurant so you may have to wait but it's worth it!

I give up. Every time I have gone to Liberty Cafe in the past three years they have never been able to accomodate. Extremely rude and hostile when you enter and even when you leave. How a dump like this survives in this town amazes me. Try somewhere else!

It's true, this really is the best Chicken PotPie ever along with other delicious items on the menu. There is usually a wait, but the wait is worth it. Excellent service. (apparently the word P0T is an inappropriate word according to Citysearch, too funny). I'm pretty sure "that" ingredient is not in this pie.

I ate at Liberty Cafe finally after hearing great things about it for several years. We went there on a Friday -early evening. There were many children, and many parents not keeping after there children. However, our waiter suggested we go to the back bar and try some wine. It is a beautiful cottage w/ a nice selection of wines by the glass. Amy did an excellent job in suggesting and having us try some different wines. Greg, our waiter, came back and got us, and we were seated at our table. Let me start by saying Greg did an excellent job in taking care of us and other tables while he had to manouver around children laying on the ground - he was much more patient than I would be, and I can't understand how parents can allow their children to lie on the floor of any restaurant. Greg made some suggestions - the Chicken Potpie and the flank steak which were both outstanding. One of the best Potpies that I've ever had. The prior reviewer sounds like someone out for vengeance -writing like a scorned employee. Greg's wine service was excellent as was the wine list was really well done for such a small friendly place. We finished w/ some dessert wine and luscious desserts. The overall experience was excellent and we will definitely be back! I suggest everyone to go for a casual lovely meal.

If you're looking to run home jaws clenched shut to keep yourself from throwing up, then Liberty cafe is for you. The caesar salad was ok. The lemonade was just unsweetened lemon juice. and the potpie inspired small explosions in my stomach. the majority of the crust was uncooked and slimy. And the vegitables were sub par. When a waiter finally came over to check on us after twenty minutes and we told him about the uncooked crust he told us the ingridients of the potpie made it soggy but it was cooked. He lied. And then tried to sell us dessert. DONT GO TO THIS RESTRAUNT!!!!

My girlfriend and I hit this place on our way to the airport on a Sunday morning. While we waited for about 30 minutes before we were seated, it was definitely worth it. We opted for ordering all of the sides instead of an entree, and we were very pleased with the decision. The breads were excellent (good selection of 4 very different though equally tasty breads). Applewood smoked bacon was very tasty, and I loved the sausage. Also, it's quite possible that they served me the finest glass of orange juice that I've ever had. I know it sounds weird, but trust me. Would definitely recommend.

What's not to like about a place that offers pot pie? Every dish I've had at Liberty is fantastic, and being able to wait in the wine bar or courtyard is vastly preferable to milling around outside, as you would at many restaurants. Learning from a waiter the meaning of "heirloom" tomato was a nice touch. I also enjoyed listening to Ella Fitzgerald while I dined.

Upon hearing numerous word of mouth reccomendations I finally decided to give this restaurant a try...While our dining experinence wasn't horrendous, it certainly did not live up to expectations. Food...not so good, Tables...SMALL, low & CrAmpEd, Service...ehh, Value...sorta pricey, especially for sub-par quality. Maybe they were having an off night, maybe not, but most likely I won't be back...

I've been to the Liberty a few times for lunch and both times were over the top! You must know that Liberty Cafe changes their menu every month with organic and seasonal ingredients, so you'll never have the same thing twice. When I go out to lunch, I don't want a sandwich, I want a gourmet meal and Liberty seems to get it. Last time I had the fried Calzone, it was INCREDIBLE!!! And I had lunch there last week and ordered the Sole Fish. It was cooked to perfection and just delicious. The waitstaff are always kind, friendly & helpful and the Chef was cute too :) This is my favorite lunch spot and next time I'll come for dinner and of course lunch.

The Liberty Cafe has many qualities to recommend it, not just their absolutely wonderfully tasty pot pies. The ceasar salad is fabulous, their daily specials always do the trick, and the service is pleasant and efficient. You sit down and within minutes you have a little basket of warm breads and rolls to nosh on. The wait person comes and answers any of your questions. Your main dish arrives and you are in heaven! The prices are completely reasonable, you can park on streets nearby, and you can enjoy selections from a lovely wine list, too. If you have to wait, especially on weekends, there is a nice wine bar in the back.

My boss was visiting from out of town and wanted to go to some place "unique" and "laid back." Liberty Cafe fit the bill perfectly. Though not in the 'excellent' or 'inspired' category, all the dishes I've had there are solidly prepared, fresh, and tasty. The fish I had this afternoon was melt-in-my-mouth good and complemented nicely with beans and tomatoes and a light buttery sauce. The banana cream pie -- specifically the crust -- was outstanding, though I think my heart was less than happy with the delicious fresh cream ;). Oh, and I HIGHLY recommend the figs with goat cheese. YUM!

Basically Liberty Cafe is wholesome food served by a helpful staff in a crowded but comodious environment. The friendly vibes are so much nicer than the snobbery one is subjected to at other "fine" eateries in SF!

The Liberty cafe has been my favorite place to dine on Saturday nights all summer. Although it is conveniently located near my home, I enjoy the consistency of the chef, the service and that delicious compplimentary bread! Recently, I dined with my very picky 70 year old mother. She was fascinated by her caesar salad($8), chicken pot pie ($14) and our handsome waiter! If you come to the Liberty Cafe, be sure to stay for dessert made fresh everyday in their lovely bakery.

Liberty Cafe is a nice retreat from the rest of busy Cortland. The food is definitely American comfort and works. However, this place does not take reservations, and the waits can sometimes be long. I would go early.

Some of their signature dishes are the chicken pot pie and banana cream pie. Prices are also good...about $10-12 for healthy portions.

On a hot day, beware...no A/C!

My only critique of this place is that it doesn't open sooner in the day... They've got great breakfasts on the weekends but isn't open until 10? 11:30 on weekdays?

C'MON guys.. don't call yourself a cafe if you're not going to act like one.

THE FOOD AND SERVICE ARE GREAT!!!

I love Liberty. The wine bar in the back is quiet and cute with great appetizers and really good service. The restaurant is teeny too, but the food is great and it's an overall calming and cozy experience.
