I had so much fun laughing and eating a great burger. It reminded me of the good ole days when you did not have a mortgage, car note, and other bills pressing on your brain. When you could just have fun and not worry about work tomorrow. Great fun and i hear they have all kinds of things going on there on different nights. oh and the prices were affordable.
The Rose and Crown is typical British pub - lots of beers on tap, some in the bottle and a few wine selections. Their food is actually decent (as far as fish and chips, burgers, etc go), but that isn't the main attraction. Tuesday's are pub quiz night, and the place is always packed after 9:00 - standing room only. This event has many regulars who always seem to come out on top in the end, but the experience is fun (and humbling) none-the-less. Monday's comedy is decent as far as small-time stand-up goes. But, do go too often as the same comics frequently return every week with the same material. R & C is my favorite bar in Palo Alto for just hanging out and relaxing with a drink and friends.
The Rose & Crown (along with Dan Brown's and the Nuthouse) feels like one of the few genuine bars in Palo Alto. Friends I take there for the first time are always disappointed that R&C only has beer, but it's a pretty solid selection on tap. Trivia Night is fun (though watch out for the lurking College Jeopardy champion from Stanford in the crowd), but the Comedy Night is usually pretty weak. The outside area is nice when it's warm, and the inside manages to be cozy without being too stuffed or noisy. PA prices, but what can you do.
Palo Alto isn't really a big drinking town, but the Rose & Crown, tucked away in a corner just off University is a great little haven for those that like a great pint or two. Outdoor seating and free wifi, plus a hand-pumped ale is sometimes available for a nice change-up.
Pros: Great selection of European beers
Cons: Sometimes crowded
