Message from Osha Thai Restaurant

Thai food emphasizes balance of ingredient flavor, texture, and seasoning. Osha Thai (Valencia) offers an escape from "carbon copy" Thai restaurant menus, choosing instead to serve some of the Bay Area's most authentic traditional Thai, as well as modern riffs using local fresh ingredients. Besides delighting the discerning palate, our kitchen takes pride in sophisticated presentation. Dishes will be treated to such decorative touches as fresh orchid flowers and carved vegetable accents. OSHA offers a distinctive dynamic wine selection, monthly hand-picked wine list to complement our seasonal menus. Enticing, experimental, and fun.

The Scene
Squeezed into a gritty Mission block, the small dining room is a stylish, peaceful respite from the outside, with jungle-foliage wallpaper and fluorescent lights softened by a gauzy mesh curtains. Blond-wood tables, Jetson-like plastic chairs and black-clad waitstaff complete the mod-squad feel, though the patrons are the neighborhood's standard blend of yuppie-meets-grunge.

The Food
An encyclopedic list of bargain-priced Thai dishes makes this a paradise for cash-strapped food lovers. From traditional starters such as crisp, flavorful egg rolls to Tom Yum noodles with its exotically comforting balance of lemongrass and lime, meals begin with a bang--especially if you request it spicy. Laht Nah, crispy rice noodles and vegetables covered with a thick, sweet-salty sauce, is an interesting departure from the ubiquitous pad thai. Spicy eggplant, a heaping portion stir-fried with tofu, bell peppers and Thai basil, demonstrates the kitchen also has excellent skills at the wok.

Bad Service

by sflocalguy

I went to Osha with a group of friends to celebrate a birhtday. The food was good, but the service was very bad. The waitress served us the wrong dish and then charged us for it. Part of going out is the service. This is not a cheap restaurant, so no one needs this kind of behavior from a server. There are much better restaurants in ths part of the city with good service. I recommend going to them and NOT to Osha.

Pros: Food is good

Cons: Horrible service - go to another restaurant

Great DISAPPOINTMENT

by jc415

I have never felt so disrespected by any server after coming to this place. My partner and I ordered a simple entree which took so long. The server never came to serve us water, neither he hesitate to give us re-fill. By the time the food came, it was cold. I kindly ask the waiter to replace it but instead he said, "I can put it in a microwave" . I was not going to pay for a microwaved food. He look at us with disgust, and he never came back to make sure that we are satisfied. I respect all the servers, i thought that it is such a noble job but also this specific waiter should keep in mind that they play a crucial role. Im deeply saddened by this experience, I hope that the owner/manager would pay attention to the service that they present. It is not just about the quality of the food but also with the service.

Pros: modern interior design

Cons: service

best deal in lunch time specials

by newguysfo

This is a simple review. My whole Office loves this place. We went for lunch together and every body was happy with the food, service, quantity, ambience etc. Each of us then went back individually and still love it. So, I recommend OSHA for Lunch, it's five star. I don't know anything about dinner.

Pros: recommending the lunchtime service

Cons: hard to find parking

Great Thai place

by ls04

The pad see you is my favorite dish here. Most of the items on the menu can be ordered vegetarian which is nice. I like the atmosphere and decor,. There is usually a bit of a wait (not too bad though).

Great modern thai food.

by korkyboswell

I love the food at this place - and they deliver! It's a simple system they have of ordering a sauce style and then adding shrimp, chicken or tofu and that's why the food comes out of the kitchen fresh and vibrant. The seating is a little uncomfortable and the music can be a bit too loud for older adults to feel relaxed here - ie, it can seem a little 'clubby' - but those fresh rolls and tofu satay make up for all of that! Mmmmmm.

Pros: Great food and mirin cocktails

Cons: Music can be loud sometimes

Takeout, Great Food.

by justineelise

I normally love this place, but I realized today that never order take out or try to get delivery. They make you talk to 5 different people and 15 minutes later they finally take your order. My best advice is come here for the take out. The food has gotten more pricey in the last year and the portion has mean while remained the same. And the seats are so uncomfortable. But the food...AHHH THE FOOD! Is amazing. I always get the Brown Rice Claypot and BBQ Chicken over fried Rice. Those are my life staples. So get take out. It's fast and easy especially if you have some driving so you can double park and run in. Take out takes no more than 3 minutes from the time they say your food is ready. Takeout...It just makes the most sense.

Pros: Takeout, Great Thai Food

Cons: Limited Delivery, Uncomfortble seating, Crowded

I LOVE OSHA THAI wooo hooo

by meredithgood

My two girlfriends and I accidentally found Osha while walking around on Valencia, and we lucked out! The service was incredibly fast, the food was amazing, and our waitress was the most attentive I've had in a long time. Def go.

Pros: service, atmosphere

Cons: grungy neighborhood if you're not into that

Best Tom Yum and Tom Kha Soup!

by flyerno12

My group of 9 had a 7:30 reservation on a Friday night and were seated promptly.
The food was awesome, especially the soups. The ambience is modern, but also warm. The prices were very reasonable. Plus there is a cool Irish bar right next door called "The Phoenix".

Pros: Food, Scene

Cons: Can get crowded

a late-nite meal!

by promesf

these guys serve very good Thai food, fast and at good prices. i go to the Geary location, as its on my way home. since i generally do take-out orders, they mostly have it ready in 15mins. i love their thai fried rice w/ chkn, yellow curry w/ chkn, and tom ka seafood soup. and they are open really late!

Pros: good food, fast, open late

Different and as Good as Geary

by arptro

This isn't simply the same Geary Osha food at higher prices. I loved the Geary location and was hesitant, but decided to give this location a try. It didn't disappoint. Great decor. Food is a bit more expensive but they also have diferent offerings. At 11:15PM on a Sun night the food the fresh and each ingredient distinctly added to the dish.

Understaffed and rude servers

by hairpin

\I had a horrible experience there the last time I went. I waited the whole time to get a napkin. We requested a napkin twice and never received it. As well, I ordered a curry mild. Well, I have problems with spicy food recently, but I thought it would be ok as they usually aren't that spicy. I got my curry and it tasted more on the medium side. I told my waitress about it, and she instantly wisked my dish away saying that they would "check on it". Even though I had said, "it's fine, I just wanted to warn you". Anyways, she keeps the dish away from me for the whole meal while everyone else eats. I finally get some food back from her, but by that time, everyone is done. I felt like I was being punished for commenting, though I still wanted to eat!!!

Pros: decor, light

Cons: horrible, rude, service

A huge disappointment

by alasnik

On my way home from the theatre tonight I had a craving for Thai food. I've loved Osha's Geary location forever -- great prices, fast service, delicious food -- and since the Mission location is closer to my home, I dropped by there. What a mistake! Food is 30-50% more expensive than at the Geary location ($10.95+ for curries?!), food is neither more plentiful or tastier, the wait is longer, and the menu is MANY TIMES smaller! Okay, so it has a trendy atmosphere, but the seats are worse than uncomfortable (again, strikingly so compared to the comfy booths of Osha at Geary). Why would people rave about this place?!

Pros: Open late, Decent food

Cons: Overpriced, Limited menu, Parking

Music Good, Food Borderline...

by Emanangan

I agree the decor and location cannot be beat. I live only a few blocks away and couldn't wait to try our my "neighbourhood Thai." Disappointing! I try the Pad Thai which should be one of the best dishes in any casual Thai restaurant since it's so standard, but OSHA's pad thai was gluey and oversweet-- a negative comment read on several other reviews. The meat on the lamb satay was good, but it was on the specials menu. And, the sauces that came with the spring rolls and the satay were also over the top-- too much, too strong as if drowning us in the key flavours of Thai cuisine would hide OSHA's shoddy technique. Desserts look temping, but that's all I'm getting next time...

Pros: music, decor, location

Cons: food, sauces, service

Not Late nite

by mvlahoes

This place says that they opened until midnight. Well I went there at 11:30pm. I still had another 30 mins to eat. But when I got the table , the waitress started to rush me.
I mean, if you are going to be open, please serve your customer with respect. But if you want to go home, please don't serve us at all. Maybe you want to consider closing a little early?

Pros: Food

Cons: service, food, atmosphere

Not impressed. Fell prey to the hype. Food dry and too sweet. Found the decor rather sterile. Wait staff seemed bored and disinterested. Parking in that area after dark was truly a drag. Oh well..live and learn.

much better thai out there

by alexafimiani2

There are soooo many better thai places around, I don't know why osha gets such high marks. The place on valencia has nice decor, but the food is just not that good. All the dishes I had (pad thai, curry, ect) were way too sweet and I am pretty sure they use msg.

Pros: decor

Cons: food is too sweet

Hip, trendy Thai place

by jyoung547

My friends and I had a great time there last Friday. Thank god we make the reservatiaon first, or we have to wait in line.

The food is beyond my expectation. The grilled beef is great, the Asian basil add special flavor to it. Curry is exactly medium spicy like the way I want. They have 4-5 choices for rice, try garlic/ginger rice, taste great!!

Dont' forget to enjoy the dessert-- Sticky Rice & Mango. It's served in a big wine glass with a scoop of sorbet on top. The best one I've ever had here.

Parking will be a little tricky. Try some public parking lot on Mission St.

Pros: ambiance, service

Cons: Parking, tiny tables , bathroom

A great treat in the Mission

by lolasmommy

Osha is a great little Thai place- sleek, modern, great lighting, and perfect for a date or small group. The food may not be the most authentic, and they only serve beer and wine- no liquor- but the menu has a lot of options for meat eaters and veggies alike, and everyone we've taken there has been pleased. Getting lots of appetizers to share is always a good idea here- they are my favorites at Osha, specifically the tofu, the beef rolls, the spring rolls, and satay. Stop in for lunch when they have great deals and aren't so busy.

Pros: low prices, atmosphere, good specials menu

Techno Thai

by vana31198

This place is great, open late, good food, fast service. Good for small or large parties, techno in the background, good prices. I go there all the time.
P.S. Not a fancy place, or a great place for a romantic dinner.

Pros: fast service, open late, good food

Do not go late or you will Kick out

by cotasonia

The food was great, but unfortunately we arrived there late; however, the open sign was on the door. First we were rushed to order in 10 mins because the kitchen was about to close. The food arrive, and it was good, however we felt rushed out of the place, the turned the lights back on and off, and over all we felt very uncomfortable and ended up leaving.
The service was rude. The food was good.

Cons: , bad experience, bad atmosphere

Best Thai Food in SF

by chris_craigslist

Forget Koh Samui & the monkey, Thep Phanom or Manora. Osha Thai is not only twice as fun to be in, the menu is highly inspired, delicious and served up by the sweetest and cutest waitstaff you'll find anywhere. The fusion dishes such as salmon sashimi mango salad and the beef wasabi rolls are a Japanese & Thai knockout. The wine list is thoughtful and well crafted. Best I've seen in any Thai restraunt, hands down. Try the Lychee-tini. Make a reservation on the weekend- this place fills up fast!

Pros: Thai Fusion Food, Cocktails, Ambiance

Cons: , Slightly Expensive

Delicious

by ellietaft

It's hard to find a place that has really cool ambience with friendly service, let alone great food. Osha manages to do it all and has become my new favorite place. I haven't ever ordered anything that wasn't delicious. All my friends that have gone there with me feel the same. It is in a great location that makes going out after very easy. My only word of caution is tht they don't go easy on the spice. When they say spicy, they mean it. Go there!

Pros: Food, Ambience, Spicy Food

Agree -- great wine list!

by whiin0

I've been herding a group here monthly, and the wine and drink list just keeps getting better and better. Unlike any other list I've seen, it actually gives a full description in fun fashion -- like having a very patient sommelier talk about each bottle. And these aren't just the usual suspect wines you generally encounter -- I've had some remarkable bottles. Food is great, and plated very nicely. Less so than many Thai restaurants, but it still doesn't hurt to ask for real Thai flavor, or the kitchen may skimp on the fish sauce or chili in deference to non-thai tastes.

Pros: Great wine, authentic thai food, open late

Not all that

by sleshi

I went to Osha because of the rave reviews I read, but I honestly wasn't too thrilled. The presentation is wonderful, the ambiance is great, but the food isn't thee best I've had. Although, I heard the angry ocean dish is amazing (I'm not into seafood), maybe that's where they make up for it. Parking is a pain!!! The service was slow and they were a bit pricey also. Don't go out of your way to eat here.

Pros: Ambiance, presentation

Cons: , Parking, Service

Winning Fast

by downtown_chick

This is quickly becoming our favorite restaurant. The atmosphere, food and service are wonderful-- all at a pretty cheap price! Once we had people that were having trouble with the menu and the manager himself came over with recommendations. Highly recommended as the best Thai restaurant in the city! The only drawback is that they don't have a full bar.

Pros: Inexpensive, Amazing Food, Decor

Cons: , Not a Full bar

Best Wine List in a Thai restaurant!!

by mrf00die

I have enjoyed the original Osha Thai on Geary and the authentic Thai food, but this location adds great atmosphere with a downbeat soundtrack and high design seating / menu. Still authentic Thai noodles, but some fusion concept dishes as well. But as a wine buff, I must particularly congratulate the great personal and eclectic wine list. Just wish that Schwarzenagger Groper Beltightener was available! Besides these kinds of jokes, it offers some real Wine Spectator 90+ wines at a great value! And check out the dessert wines -- great after a spicy meal.

Pros: Excellent Wine List, Authentic Thai, Fusion Thai

great service, the host is super friendly, helped us with our travel plans to bangkok, otherwise, service is pretty business oriented, get seated, eat, clean up. food is good, great value, especially soups, not the most authentic, but good amounts and tasty, great decor, and open late, for what more can you ask?

Pros: host, inexpensive, cool hood

Thank you for opening in the mission!

by sally24

I've been a big fan of Osha on geary since I moved here 3 years ago. They've finally opened a second place on 19th and valencia..which is great news for us mission dwellers. Great tom yum, pan fried duck, green paste fried rice, I can go on..everyone should try this place.
