find another vet to do grooming care

by P M.

we saved a beautiful 7 month old kitten from the animal shelter, and chose to have her 1st time check up at San Carlos Vet. This was a 1st time free check up (courtesy of the animal shelter) so after the free check up, we ended up getting her nails clipped and they charged us $19.50 for something that took 2 minutes. I was furious of this price since I have 3 dogs that when I take them to my groomer, she only charges $7.00 per dog. So do the price of just the nail clipping I'd hate to go back and see what they charge for other services. Never again. Looking for a better vet.

Very good-Honest

by Betty B.

Excellent overall experience. Vet was honest & caring. Difficult case, handled well. Retro designed building with pet topiary out front--cool. Somewhat lower cost than previous Vets. Would recommend.Only negative: female Vet hesitant to Rx Prozac for my Separation Anxiety 12 yr. dog who'd had symptoms 1 yr. & been tried (unsuccessfully) on Clonicalm (Imipramine) and Valium. I had to go somewhere else to get the Prozac which has reduced symptoms in my pup..
Seems that Vet is more cautious than confident.

Great Vet

by NICOLE F. | insider Insider | Rank: 22,284

Dr. Persky is great, attentive vet that truly cares about your pet's well-being. He answered many questions we had about our new puppy. The cost of a spay/neuter was a bit pricey, but regular vaccination charges were the norm. The ensured that we received and returned all paperwork for our puppy's license.

I Highly Recommend this Vet Hospital

by Megan K. | insider Insider | Rank: 22,948

I found San Carlos Vet Hospital when my dog need ACL surgery. It was recommended by a surgeon in the Bay Area and I'm glad I took their advice.

The service we have received has been outstanding. The staff is knowledgeable and friendly. Even though it's a bit of a drive for us, we've continued to use this vet as our primary vet.

Great Service

by Vivian V. | insider_guru Insider Guru | Rank: 938

I used to take my German Shepard, Tank here, and the veterinarians and the nurses were so kind to us. They are not as pricy as the other Veterinarians around San Diego. Although the office is small it's cozy and it makes you feel at home, even for your dogs :)

Almost perfect all-around service

by Margaret D. | insider_expert Insider Expert | Rank: 2,287

I like this vet because they are honest with you about what you do and don't need for your pet. There are several different vets working here. One is a renowned surgeon. I've seen each and liked all except for the female vet.
For instance, one vet told me I didnt' need heartworm meds for my dog since there are no cases in San Diego. Also, when my cats had to be brought in for a follow-up for ear mites, and they had no evidence of needing a follow-up, the vet didn't charge me. Another time, when I had my cats vaccinated, the vet said they didn't need the full range of shots because they were indoor, which also saved me money (and which no other vet had told me before-- they usually want you to get everything no matter what).
The one female vet asked, when I brought my cat and my 3 year old in, if my cat had a safe place to get away from him. I felt she'd automatically assumed I was an irresponsible pet owner and parent. She lacked good "bedside" manner.
The waiting room and support staff are very nice. They have murals on the wall and lots of magazines to read.

PROS: Most vets give you the scoop, save you money
CONS: One vet lacks good bedside manner
