Some of the freshest fish in LA! My friend took my husband and I there and we were blown away by the quality of the fish! We, in turn, took my family there and my cousin from San Francisco (sushi aficionado) could not stop raving about Hamakawa! The slices of fish are huge and so fresh that you would think that they had just sliced it off the fish itself! Their other dishes are good too...especially the Beef Tataki! Plus the place is open late at night.

this time i came earlier and didnt bother with a reservation or put any trust in it.

so now that i've eaten there what do i think? the place was pretty good as i expected, as the sushi was just as good as sushi gens across the street, the other top place in little tokyo.

What i ordered otherwise was a bit lacking, but it was more my fault, even the waitress warned me i may not like it, which i appreciated. It was Tuna Sashimi with a sticky potato paste (i did not know it was a paste). I fully intend to go back and try more dishes that may better fit my pallet, but in the meantime, the top qualiy fish and best red snapper (i think its by default japanese snapper there, which is excellent) in town earn my reccomendation.

Pros: Japanese Snapper, Sushi, menu "variety"

Cons: parking, no actual sushi menu?

I was in Little Tokyo with my parents and my friend, and my dad just picked this restaurant simply based on how crowded it looked. We were in for a very pleasant surprise. The service was absolutely impeccable, the food was great, and the prices were reasonable. Made me wish I lived in L.A. We tried their sushi and sashimi as well as lots of small dishes and their udon. On par with some of the best Japanese restaurants (not one of those very expensive ones like Nobu, but mid-price ones) one could find in NY, and offers a greater variety.

First of all, as a nigiri sushi fanatic, let me just say this: There is no place that can top Hamakawa at the moment, and certainly you won't find a place that serves the FRESHEST FISH and the GIGANTIC size portion that they give you! Now, the honorable mention: The 1st week of May, 2005 (my birthday), my girlfriend had decided that we go to Hamakawa for the 2nd time. When we got there, the tables were full except for the bar and there was another birthday party going on, but we rather wait. Suddenly the crew set up a nice little table on the side of the bar (perfect spot for 2) and everything's just perfect from there on. The sushi was always fresh and good in size quantity and its got this rich silky velvety taste to it. The establishment was squeaky clean and the service and hospitality was excellent as usual. From all the above mentioned, the two times we went there was beyond satifactory.

i found this place several years ago when just walking around Little Tokyo.. havent stop coming here since.. the sushi is fresh, and they give you hearty protions of each piece. i deflinitely recommend the albacore tataki, most of they tofu dishes and their standard sushi, salmon, shrimp, eel. they are great at making traditional sushi. the prices are very reasonable for the quality you get.
i got to know one of the chefs by name and every time i see him he make the greatest sushi for me.
also if you go there late.. make sure to notice the old man at the end of the bar.
he goes there every day around 11pm, i believe he was related to the original owner, not quite sure, but he has been coming here for decades. nice quality to have for a restaurant.

PROS: open late on weekdays (2am)
CONS: the cut rolls arent as big as i would like them to be

I got this info from a Japanese friend who works in Little Tokyo, Los Angeles. This is so far the most authentic Japanese sushi restaurant I have ever been. Their price is reasonable and most of all their sushi is very fresh. Toro is extremely fresh! Their cooked dishes are very good too. Their small Japanese dish is good with sake and beer. We have been going there for years. Hm......just by taking about it makes me hungry....yum.....yum.....

Upon entering Hamakawa, the simple decor did not divulge much about what I was about to taste. The cooked cod dish was great and the nigiri was generous. The fish was extremely fresh and I would recommend this place to anyone who wants a casual sushi dinner or sushi snack without murdering your wallet.

Hamakawa is probably the best value for sashimi in the city. It may not have the uber-trendy atmosphere of many L.A. sushi restaurants, but the sashimi is delicious, cheap and comes in large portions. Overall good food, good service.

I've been coming to this place for years, and Hamakawa never disappoints! The fish is as fresh as it gets, slices of fish are BIG, quality is tops, and service is great. I'd definitely recommend the soft shell crab roll (aka spider roll), which is a meal in itself. Also, try one of the many grades of toro they have. Location can be a little shady at times, however it's worth it! Plus, they're open late!

After reading the high praises and compliments for Hamakawa, I was expecting great sushi. To the very least, I thought it would be comparable to Sushi Gen's (just across the street) sushi. As it turned out, my experience was not bad, but just nothing special. Other than sushi, Hamakawa does offer many other neat food items, like soba, yakitori, etc.. The one great thing about Hamakawa is the late late hours it opens into the night. Any sushi would be great at 1 AM, I suppose.

i personally love this place, albeit its not the most romantic place to go for a date, but it has great food. the chefs are very nice and you can have a nice chat with them.. it has lots of space, but small tables only, at least thats what i have seen.. i am a very big spender on sushi, i can easly rack about $150 for 2 on sushi, so to get a place like this that has great sushi and is at a much lower price bracket its great.. i say though much lower being relative to each person.. i dont mind spending $80 for 2 but you might.. but when you see the large portions of salmon they serve and have a great unagi.. slightly burnt on the edges.. really good.. hmmm.... i have been here many times and have gotten to know the chefs..

I didn't anticipate ordering so much, but it was so good I coundl't stop.

Great service. Great sushi. Enough said.

If you are looking for a trendy-people watching restaurant, then go somewhere else. However, if you are looking for quality sushi and very friendly service, then Hamakawa will not disappoint you. We went there for lunch and were treated to some great tasting sushi, attentive service, and reasonable prices. A definite winner among sushi places!

After reading the reviews on this site, I headed down to Little Toyko to take a look for myself. Hamakawa was a great place to dine - the service was excellent (the waitresses run!) and the food was amazing. I found the menu to be on the small side, but I described what I wanted and the chef made it for me. The rolls are very simple (no fancy sauces or sides), but they are big and the fish is very fresh. We ordered a number of rolls and sushi, sake and beer, and still had money left over to go shopping at the outside mall down the street. It was a great time!

I'm a sushi fanatic and have tried all the places in town (Matsuhisa, Nobu, Roku, etc..........). Although I enjoy going to those fine establishments for a meal, the sushi quality of Hamakawa is on par or even better. The salmon and tuna are always top notch! Be sure to sit by chef "A." Once you get to know him, he'll hook you up! Also, introduce yourself to the guy who looks like Einstein, who happens to dine there every night at 11PM!
