I was a loyal fan for the years after this place first opened and the brother's sister Julianna worked there. I hadn't gone in several years and lately went four times. The waiter still recognized me but I didn't recognize what used to

Went there last evening with friends. After telling the hostess we had reservations, we were kept waiting for over an hour. We decided to sit on the bench inside and my friend ordered a glass of wine. The waitress/manager took her order (rudely and without a smile) and while we were waiting for our table, made us feel as if we were in the way and a bother. After being seated, our waiter asked if we knew about "family style". Of course we do--we've been there about 8 times already. It seems as if every single time they always try to push the "family style". We found out that they usually 1 1/2 times the portion, charge you an outrageous amount, and the portion isn't really that much larger. We had a diabetic at our table who couldn't eat pasta and wanted his own seafood dish. Our waiter (again, another rude and not smiling person), obviously wasn't happy with our decision. Now, for the best part. We ordered 2 desserts to share and the waiter came back and asked us if we were sure we didn't want 3. I'm beginning to think they want to "up the total bill". At the end of the evening, my friends were disappointed and I was embarassed. The food is good but the service lousy. I don't think we'll be back.

This is a wonderful restaurant. Attention students: definitely come here on a first date. I came here on a first date several years ago and will always remember it. I've come back several times since. Whenever the wait is long, they will pour you a glass of wine to enjoy while you wait. Definitely take note that this place is cash only or you and your cute date will be washing dishes!

Great authentic Italian food. I went here with only one other person but I hear they can accommodate larger groups and serve 'family style.' The food was all very flavorful and portions were fair. The desserts are also very good. The atmosphere is very 'cute' but small and there is limited seating compared to the number of people who try to eat here and instead end up waiting outside on college, standing around this small restaurant. Two major downsides for Trattoria la Sicilliana- they don't have reservations which is unfortunate because they get very busy and they are cash only, which I couldn't believe because for a restaurant that is over $20/person, they should take credit!

Try this: spaghetti with black ink sauce. Out of this world!

Other than that, the serice is OK, and it used to be better under the previous management.

I have been going to Trattoria La Siciliana for years--it was my favorite Italian restaurant in the Bay Area. Three years ago, I moved overseas. I would dream of the Gnocchi Alla Norma and the Pesto Penne, and couldn't wait for my yearly visit to Berkeley to partake of the wonderful food there.

After three years of fantasizing, I took my European partner and some friends to the Trattoria. I found the food not just mediocre, but completely inedible. The creamy, garlicky, flavorsome pesto I remembered was reduced to something resembling a gritty pea soup!! It felt and tasted like I was eating sand. When I notified the waitress, she said that perhaps the basil was not properly washed (which completely grosses me out already), and nicely offered to replace it. The second portion of pesto was exactly the same--absolutely inedible. I again complained to the waitress, who then offered something completely different. The Gnocchi Alla Norma she brought was hastily prepared, watery, and bland. We felt that because the restaurant messed up three times, we should at least be comped that dish, but we ended up paying for the whole thing.

I was very disappointed--the food was definitely not what I remembered!. My partner, who spent every summer in Italy, quipped that after living in Europe, I now know what proper Italian food tastes like! Despite the nice service we received, I don't think we would be returning to Trattoria La Siciliana again. But I will always remember it for all the great times I spent there with my girlfriends, and for the former glory of its food...

Pros: Friendly service, great atmosphere, eccentric chef

Cons: Crowded, inconsistent food, not good value for money

Was part of a party of eleven last evening. We were told that we could not order individually due to the kitchen only having four burners. The waiter was rude and when we asked if we could order individually, he brought one of the owners. She gave us the same song and dance. Quite rude. When we finally ordered, the food was poor at best. Several mistakes were made as well. To top it off, the place only takes cash and adds 20% for large parties even though the food and service were brutal. The place was quite busy which proves that there is a large group of consumers that just don't get good food. Never again! Check out some of the other poor reviews.

I think all the five-star reviews must be made by either paid PR people or diners who traveled in from Walnut Creek and, as such, know nothing about food.

I go by this place all the time, live in the neighborhood. There is always a crowd, usually young, out front.

The other night I was starving, walked by, it was very slow, so I thought I would see what the hubbub was about. I ordered a Cesar salad and a braised/roasted (not sure) lamb shank.

The salad dressing was almost pure vinegar, over salted, and barely edible. The lamb was dry and tough - and that is hard to do with lamb! Lambshank should be falling off the bone. I am a very good cook, and I love eating good food, but it was nowhere to be found that night. I have a friend who owns a biz in the same block. She is a better cook and bigger food-lover than me, and she panned the place when I asked, laughed when I told her I ignored her and dined there anyway.

The bill, with a bottle of water, came to $40 ... absolutely ridiculous. Of course, the food was so bad, any price would have been ridiculous. Want a much better meal for less than half that? Try Filippo. Or a much better meal for 3/4 that price? A Cote.

Trattoria La Siciliana is a friggin' JOKE.

Cons: Overpriced bad food. Long waits many nights.

As soon as you walk through the door, the warm smells of spices envelope you and draw you in like the hug of a sweet Italian grandma who knows her kitchen.

Ask for the veal meatball house specialty. I don't know the word in Sicilian, but this mouthwateringly divine combination of savory meat, spices, onion, and love will make your taste buds faint with orgasmic satisfaction.

The staff is incredibly friendly and charming-- like one big family. In fact, they may be family. You will be welcomed with a smile and served in style.

Divine! Go! Eat!

I've been a customer at this restaurant for years and my experience has always been fabulous.
Sometimes the wait is a little long, but is it worth it? ALWAYS! Fact is, they are magicians working to prepare food for so many people, in such a small kitchen, so being upset about waiting is ridiculous.
Spedeini, Rusticana alla Gamberoni, and the Pesto are the absolute flagships in my opinion,
however I haven't had anything I didn't like either. The dipping Oil is hard to stop eating with the bread and I usually pick up a bottle if they have any left. Advice....If you're in a hurry let the chef order for you and you 'll
be surprised!

We had reservations for 6 on a Friday night at 8pm and did not get seated until 9pm. I understand that there was a large birthday party occupying much of the top floor which caused the delay in our seating. however, an hour wait is unacceptable when you have reservations and from what I hear, this restaurant is notorious for making people wait even when they have reservations.

that being said, the food was excellent: we had the ribeye steak, linguini alla silicinia, and rigatoni cosa nostra. all are highly recommended.

This cosy family run restaurant is set in an ideal Berkeley community on College Ave. They've been around for many years, are super friendly, and have many repeat customers. Now, the most important thing! It's a popular restaurant because the food is sensational! It has the best home made Aioli dipping sauce that they also sell for good reason.
They are great about recommending what is special for the day, based on the freshest ingredients or special home made features of the day.
The Garlic prawns are to die for! Enjoy the Food & check out the beautiful family! Angelo and Jerry D'Alo are the head family Chefs. It's a great experience. If it's busy, take it easy, it's worth the wait and they usually provide you with a free glass of wine as you wait.

Pros: The Food, The Staff

.

I agree with the other reviewer that mentioned that the food is amazing, but service can be iffy depending on how the night is going. It does seem as though regulars receive preferential treatment (which is irritating due to the consistently long waits during peak hours), it can be challenging to maintain the attention of the staff, and the food can take some time before it gets to the table (keep in mind that everything is made to order, so expect something of a wait ? it?s worth it). That being said, the food is truly incredible. Their spicy olive oil for bread-dipping is to die for, and their gnocchi a la fumatore is one of the most luxurious dishes I?ve had the pleasure to put in my mouth. Their linguine with pesto and shrimp is one of my favorites as well. I?m usually pretty particular about the service aspect of a dining-out experience, but this is one place where I?m almost inclined to ignore it just to get to the food. Be prepared for potentially excruciatingly long waits, their cash-only policy, and they only offer dishes ?family style? if you show up with more than 2 people. As an aside, I?ve recently heard a rumor that Trattoria might be on the verge of closing at some point due to friction within the family ? I hope it?s not the case.

I have eaten here many times and the food is always really terriffic. There is always a wait for a table unless you eat really early, but that's ok. In the past the service was okay, and you could see how busy your waiter was, which made me think they just didn't put enough servers on the floor, but the food was great so it was still worth it. But recently, the service has taken a nose-dive. The waitress we had last time was really terrible, the only reason we ever got water refills, another glass of wine, boxed leftovers, dessert menus and finally our check is because we kept stopping the busboy, who was better at paying attention when he went by even if we had to spell out what we needed each time. I asked a different server if they were shortstaffed and he said they were not. On top of that, when we got our bill, we had been charged 7.50 per glass of wine (4 glasses), when the wine we ordered was 4.50 a glass. I stopped the busboy, who went and got the waitress. I pointed out that we had ordered a different wine than we got charged for. She said "oh, I never pour that wine because (blah blah)." She unilaterally decided to pour us a different wine than we ordered and charged us nearly twice the price!!! Then she acted put upon and huffily changed the bill to reflect what we had ordered. It was truly shocking. I have seldom had such poor service anywhere. If I have to sit in her section again I would not go back. There are other good Italian places. I wanted to tip the busboy directly and bypass the waitress entirely, but unfortunately I was not the one paying.

We've been to T la S many times and always have enjoyed good food and service. We're prepared for a relaxed, slow paced meal so we're not unused to dinner taking up to 2 hours on weekends. We've hired Jerry and Angelo to cater our company party last year ('05) and they were wonderfully received and commented upon. We're using them again this year, '06 and are looking forward to more rave reviews. I've read the negative reviews and the positive ones and they seem like they're written about different restaurants? As I said, we continue to love the place and take friends there for their first time and have only had positive responses.
We wish them long life and good health!

Pros: Good Sicilian food, served fresh and hot

Cons: If you're ready for a relaxing meal, then a bit of a wait is o.k. - go early for faster seating

I love the food but hate the service. It's not so much the waiters; they are friendly and helpful. The problem seems to be getting seated promptly with or without reservations, and obvious favortism of regulars.

Having been here once before, I brought my aunt here boasting how great this place is. Unfortunately this time was far different. Our service was deplorable. We were routinely ignored while others promptly received their dishes. We got there at 4:45 and were the very first people to be seated for dinner. We ordered an appetizer and two dishes. Our simple appetizer of sliced cheese took an hour to make its way to our table. We didnt get your dishes until 7:15. Well over 2 hours after we were seated. During this time everyone else around us received their food promptly. Almost all had even finished and left before we got our food. Even people who had entered the restaurant more than an hour after us were getting their dishes. I have never had a worse experience at a restaurant.

i think that trattoria la siciliana has some of the best pasta and flavors in the bay area. they are really nice people, but it takes a long time to get your food because there are only two people cooking. the price is reasonable, but they force you to eat family style with parties of four or more, and that really limits your selection. my recommendations are: the linguine with prawns in zesty garlic red sauce (delicious sauce!), the penne a la carbonara (cheesy white sauce, lots of chopped bacon), and the porcini ravioli. oh, if your party is three or more, CALL FOR RESERVATIONS. once three friends and i waited THREE hours for our table - sure, it was at the end of may, around berkeley's graduation, but still, the wait was long... and i guess the most important take-away: we waited and have been back many times since.

My wife and I were going to eat here as we have many times before. We knew we would have to wait but the food would be worth it. We arrive and there was 1 table ahead of us and we are told the wait will be quick. As we wait and watch the owner cook, some friends of the chef/owner show up, state they need to make it to a movie, and the owner gives them free wine, and OUR table, right in front of us. Seeing that we knew what happened, he tried to appease us with a single 1/16th full glass of wine. We ended up waiting an extra 23 min(total:55min) until we were seated. At what point is great food no longer worth it, right here. Couldnt have felt less important.

I have a hard time with the negative reviews. Every time I've been there (5 or 6 times), I've been transported to wonderful place and come out with a smile. Try getting a table upstairs, maybe that will help. I know it can be cold by the front door.

Pros: food, service, atmosphere

.

Trattoria la Siciliana is me and my fiance's favorite place to eat! The restaurant is small and intimate, has a fun atmosphere and a great staff. And then there's the food! I haven't tried anything I haven't liked! All the dishes are amazing! Then to think the chef makes each dish fresh! This isn't the Olive Garden where they heat up some pre-cooked pasta and throw on some sauce that's been sitting around all day. This is the real deal!We take everyone we know here. We love this place so much we're even having our wedding reception dinner here! It's the kind of place you can take a big group and order a couple bottles of wine and some great food and sit back and relax and be loud and happy and no one is going to get uppity about it. We love it and wouldn't change a thing!

This is my favorite Italian place ever, and I am a regular there. But it has its drawbacks. The wait, while long, is made bearable due to the garlicky olive oil dip they serve with their bread. The food is excellent, no matter your selection. I would recommend the linguini a la vongole with clams & white wine sauce, and the veal rolls. Their pastas are just out of this world. However, a few items on their menu seem to be never available because of their small kitchen (why not just take it off the menu?), and their servers can be very very pushy when it comes to deciding on what you want, especially if you have a large group. That said, I take all my foodie friends to this place whenever they're in town, because it's that good.

The wait is frustrating, the food is incredibly expensive and the ambiance is average. That being said, I can't wait to go back. The food is incredible. If you truly love authentic italian food this restaurant is a "can't miss." Bring lots of cash though, no credit cards.

Basically, this restaurant serves the most authentic
Italian food. I was there last night. There was an unbelievable long wait. As soon as we got sat and had dinner, we realized why so many people wait to eat at this restaurant. We had the most amazing sausage and peppers, risotto with clams, mussels, and shrimp. We also had one of the specials, a buccatini pasta with cauliflower, pinenuts, and raisins. What an amazing dinner!! It's unbelievable that there is just one chef in the kitchen cooking all of the dishes.
After last night, I am a full fleged regular.

I know you see a huge range of good/bad reviews of Trattoria - but here is the real truth: Trattoria truly serves some of the most excellent Italian dishes around (Angelo's gnocci, Mama's pesto), but this kind of cooking takes time and you have to be willing to be patient for it (everything is made by this small staff!). Anyone who cooks can understand this. The service is average, but once you get to know the D'Alo Family, you'll come to love this place even more and understand that a family-owned place has its own special and warm kind of ambiance. Be willing to be close and warm to those around and just relax, have a wonderful Italian wine and soak it all in.

Don't be put off by the line out the door because the food and atmosphere is worth the wait (but make a reservation if you can!)! A great place to have a casual family-style dinner where you can catch up with friends over a delicious feast of crab, gnocchi or whatever you fancy!

This restaurant is among the best italian restaruants I've been to. Fantastic food, friendly waiters, and a comfortable neighborhoody ambiance combine to make Trattoria La Siciliana a great place to spend an evening.

The herb and garlic olive oil bread dip is complex and flavorful; you wonder how the pasta could taste any better... but it does! Our party of three had the lobster linguine, tiger prawn risotto, and linguine with olives and anchovies. All were unique and delicious.

They only take cash and it takes a while for the food to come out, but it's definitely worth the wait.

Your table being jostled every time the waiters run by, busboys dropping utensils on you, cold entrees... you get the picture. And despite the restaurant only having a 2 feet aisle between tables, they put a group of five across from us so that the waitstaff and every person going to the bathroom intimately joined our meal! we had a bottle of wine and wanted to eat our dinner in peace, but couldn't with everyone running around. everytime my dinner partner was about to take a bite he had to look around to make sure that he wasnt going to get bumped into and get pierced with his fork!!!! as for the food, my entree was good, but the other entree was straight out of the frig cold. we wound up splitting my pasta and eating extra bread.

I had read rave reviews of this restaurant on citysearch and zagat, but was more than pleasantly surprised that my own dining experienced exceeded my expectations. The tomatos in the insalata caprese were full of flavor, even at this late season. The mozzarella was light and fresh. However, my main course was beyond compare. I had the special raviloi with porcini mushrooms. AMAZING!! I think it was the best pasta I've ever had in my life.

One complaint was the service - our waiter did not come to our table until 15-20 minutes after we sat down. He was quite overwhelmed and rushed. They should be themselves a service by hiring just one more server.
