The pet department has very knowledgeable staff, and takes care of their aquariums well. I have yet to receive faulty advice from them. From this standpoint I like them. But their prices are completely unreasonable and their returns policy is a joke(Honesty, from reading their returns policy, I could not figure out what kinds of returns they will actually except)!
With some fish, you can get good deals here. Their clown fish are the lowest prices I have seen in the county (around $11.00 for young true Percula). They have some other salt water fish for less than $12.00 (Like some blue damsels which I think are around $5.00, a lot of their cleaners are a little lower than competitors). A lot of their coral are very reasonable or on par with competitors. Most of their freshwater fish are also on par with everyone else.
Now, as far as equipment, aquarium additives, and food- this is where they rip you off. Take the market price that most other people are charging for food, supplements, substrate, skimmers, etc... and nearly double it(I have seen some items more than double the price of competitors)- this is the price you will pay at the pet department. They want $8.00 for brine shrimp eggs: Tropics, in San Luis Obispo, charges a little over 4 for the same eggs- Foster and Smith Aquatics charges $3.49 (plus flat rate shipping, which I admit does not pay off if all you are ordering is eggs). Yes I grant that they have little sales from time to time, but knocking a dollar off of turbo snails does not change the fact that they want over $300 for a protein skimmer that sells elsewhere for around $150. In my personal opinion, any business that can have a yearly 50% off monster sale or whatever they call it, has over priced its items already.

In summary:
The employees are well informed and helpful
You can get some really good deals on fish and some corals(For many fish, PD is actually much cheaper than tropics)
Pet department has a very nice selection of fish, which is great- their selection of coral is ok(Tropics has a much better selection of Coral- they sort of specialize in Coral).
Don't buy your equipment or food here(at PD)- they want WAY too much. Drive to SLO and go to tropics- prices are much better, employees are very enthusiastic about their work, and you will actually save a ton of money even after gas (and no I do not work for Tropics, and am not getting compensated for saying this, I am just a regular customer there and do not even intend to tell them I wrote this review).

Again, I really would like to give these people a great review based on their knowledgeable and helpful staff- but their prices are not justified by their customer service alone, and personally, I do not buy the "Paso rent is so high we have to mark prices up" excuse. I am sure that contributes- but double what others are charging?! Come on, give me a break!
