Gas Lite

I took some friends here on a Saturday night and although there was no crowd outside, the bar was packed once we got inside. We eventually fought our way through to a bar and got some drinks but getting on the karoake list was out of the question. We had fun but if I go again then I might choose a weekday to go.

This is a great bar if you want a drink and don't want to fight a crowd. Although it draws a friendly, local group of people (college and up), it never seems too full and is completely without attitude. I have had my birthday party here on a Sunday and it was so much fun! We practically had to whole place to ourselves and since there is karoake every night we all got up atleast 3 times.

Okay, so let me say that the Gas Lite IS awesome. It's open a 6am, it's small, they have free popcorn and a few good bartenders. They also have karaoke.

The problem is that many UCLA students have taken over so it can be a bit trendy and less divey. The time to go is on spring break when all the kids have gone home. The place gets packed though. The karaoke is cool but the facilitator not so much. She tends NOT to stick to the list (letting everyone bribe their way to the top-- or just make friends with her), she doesn't adjust the mic so often you can't hear the singer. Look, I love the place-- but good management could make a few tweaks to make it better.

The Gas Lite is one of the best dive bars I have ever been to! They have the same staff working every week so you can really get to know them. Fun and flirty, the bartender Miranda makes a stiff drink. It's a karaoke bar that's open almost 24 hours and always has fun karaoke dj's. The only food they serve is popcorn but with a little tabasco tastes awesome when you're drunk! Parking on site and cabs make it easy to get to and from this place.
