Big city salon in Foster City

by Misti S. | insider_expert Insider Expert | Rank: 5,910

Barberia has been around forever. I started going there when I was in high school. Heidi is awesome. They even carry Aveda products! They are average priced and all stylists have been through in house training.

Not bad

by E M. | insider_expert Insider Expert | Rank: 3,336

I had a haircut from Terry (the founder? of Barberia) and at the time I wasn't very excited by it -- it appeared to do just the opposite of what I liked my hair to do. However, I have long hair and haven't had another haircut since -- a few months later -- and now my hair looks great. So I would recommend this business. It's better if you have a haircut that looks okay right away but better as it grows in than one that looks great for one day and then horrible later on.

Pricey

by Steven Q. | insider_expert Insider Expert | Rank: 6,714

I got my hair permed at this place and they charged me $85. All I got was the perm (for half a head). They did cut my hair a little bit because it was a little long, but it wasn't a major job. I had to make an appointment ahead of time, which wasn't a problem since it was the 1st time I ever had a perm.

When I left my hair was curvy, wavy, and looked very nice. I was happy. They had actually permed about 3/4 of my head as the only straight hairs left were the ones in the very back which were too short to perm anyhows. I guess it would look funny if you literally permed only half the head as half of it would be straight and the other half would be wavy.

Approximately 3 weeks afterwards my hair had straightened out. I guess with some people the perm goes away quicker.

Because I know my hair straightens out so quickly I won't be getting a perm again from them but for the 2 weeks that my hair was wavy I was a happy camper.

Barberia and their outstanding team of professionals are the most talented and educated, up to date hair designers in town. Terry DeMarco and his son T.J. are excellent business owners as well as stylist. I've been going there since the 80's. Now that's a committed client.

Pros: Very high industry standards

Best Salon in California

by Gail DeMarco

Great Salon and great experience!

I drive 2 hours each way to get my hair and my daughter's hair done every 2 months. My daughter goes to Terry DeMarco Junior and he is phenomenal. He straighten's her hair and make her feel comfortable for a picky little 12 year old. I go to Heidi and she is always on time and does meticulous color and cutting. I feel it is well worth the drive even though I feel I should get a discount since we have the same last name. I would recommend this salon to everyone. We have been going there 10 years.

Pros: They are well skilled Cutting edge and on time

Finally, a salon and stylist(s) that I love!

by ElleElle

Barberia has a system that works! Their timing is perfect. They've got girls washing hair (and giving amazing scalp massages) while your stylist is working with other clients and then transferring you back to your stylist seamlessly without waiting in between.

Over the past 3 or 4 years, I've seen Mimi, Lan, and TJ and would recommend all three highly! I have long hair and they always cut it stylishly without me having to give any direction...just a simple "make it look healthy, or clean up the layers" and they get it done! Lan and TJ have been doing my color for the past year or so and I couldn't be happier with it. I alternate between dark brunette and sunkissed blonde highlights with a lighter brown base and I am always happy with the results. If you are not happy, they will make sure to get it right!

People are always asking me where I get my hair done and I recommend Barberia every time. Also highly recommend TJ for the Brazilian blowouts -- my hair is healthier than it's ever been and I don't have to spend much time on it at all! I used to spend 30+ minutes blow drying and straightening -- now I'm done with my hair in less than 10 minutes, and that includes curling the ends. It's awesome.

Pros: Best Hair Color, Brazilian Blowout/Straightening, & Haircut!

BEST HAIR SALON ON THE PENINSULA

by Hali

First, let me state that everyone is wonderful there. I especially adore all the Receptionist, especially Melissa. I have been going to Barberia for twenty years.

The staff is friendly and everyone is beyond talented, with their skills. When you first arrive you get a warm welcome, and there is fresh water, coffee, tea, fruit while you wait.

They are very talented with hi-lighting. I personally have had many of the staff work on my hair.

I adore Irene, she is so sweet and times seems to fly by when your there.

I have had the Brazilian Hair Straightening by TJ and he is a hard worker. He takes his time, and really wants to make sure your pleased.

I have watched this young man grow up before my eyes to a very professional hair dresser. Terri Demarco should be extremely proud of him that is his son.

Also, the staff who wash your hair work so hard and their not often mentioned, but they truly go to all lengths to see that the customer is happy.

This review is long over due. Sorry Barberia maybe I just wanted to keep your salon a secret, as I still want to be able to get appointments without the word getting out how wonderful you all are.

Barberia your awesome........

Pros: BE TREATED LIKE A QUEEN OR KING FOR A DAY

Cons: sometimes difficult to find parking during lunch hour

Consistantly great service & color!

by PrincessLayers

I have been a customer at Barberia for many years and have always received excellent cuts, color and service. My most recent appointment was last minute - I asked to be fit in just before the holidays. Although Jackie squeezed me in, she did not rush through my hair color. This was my first time with Jackie, and she was great! My hair is wavy and she suggested the Brazilian Blowout to try straight hair for a while.

I keep going back and am always happy! Plus, each time I send a friend, I receive a discount!

Pros: Easy parking!

I visit Barberia regulary and am always amazed at the cleanliness, professionalism and quality I receive every visit! I see Ling for color and any of the other stylists for cuts. I try to rotate cuts, I can't seem to choose one sylist, they are all awesome!

Barberia has recently been remodeled. It is beautiful & spacious. Parking is easy, too.

I highly recommend this salon. I love Lan, Jackie & Tj for cuts!

Pros: Friendly staff, clean

best haircut and color by Liza

by neni

Where do I begin? My first time with Liza was amazing! I have had so many bad experiences with mediocre hairstylists. I am so picky with my cut and color. I absolutely HATE it when my hair is screwed up. That's why I highly recommend Liza. She gives you exactly what you want, but better! I have always had one hairstyle in my mind, went to about 3 different stylists (3 different places mind you) and not ONE could make my image a reality. Except Liza. She made my dream hairstyle come true. The cut was great. Tempting yet fun and manageable. My hair color was funky, vibrant and HOT! All my friends love it. I must say I will have THE NICEST hair walking around town. Thanks to Liza, I love touching my hair and playing with it. And so does my boyfriend. If you are looking for an out of this world (master) stylist, go to Liza! She even has a cool Russian accent! I will definitely be seeing her again!

Pros: coloring and haircuts! (by Liza!)

Cons: none

The Barberia Experience

by robynle

Unlike most of the other reviews, I've tragically despised my parking experience at the Barberia. However, this does not reflect upon the spectacular services rendered at the salon. Approximately every three - four months I make the 2.5 hour drive to Foster City to undergo my long overdue haircut. In the past few years, I've bounced around to several salons in Sacramento only giving them one chance to do a fabulous job on my fine wispy hair.

Then finally referred by my good friend, Laura - I've been going to the Barberia for about a year now. Leonard, my stylist, has been great with consultations and advice. Even though, I may not listen to him sometimes I still love my haircut. He is very patient, has great dexterity and gives me an awesome cut everytime.

The customer service aspect is superb - the place is plastered with happy faces and genuine smiles. There are a ton of stylists to meet your specific needs. If you are looking for conservative, wild, crazy, color, curls - - they've got a stylist for you. I enjoy the experience everytime.

Nothing but the best....

by stellabluzie

Where do I begin, I am not hair friendly at all and upon the discovery of Terry DeMarco's Barberia a dream truly came true. It is close enough to where I work to go at lunch and who doesn't want to be pampered at lunch. I have had several hair stylist work on my hair, Emilia, Ling to name a couple and each and every one was a delight and I left them each feeling beautiful and renewed. There is nothing like a good shampoo during a hard day to put the spirit back in you and this is the place to get it! You are treated as if you were truly someone special by everyone because they think we are and they are not fighting like the old days for customers, where the stylist had to pay for the chair. Terry DeMarco knows how to treat his employees and we the customer truly benefit from just that. From the top of your head to the tip of your toes, you are in good hands at Terry DeMarco's Barberia. Thanks to everyone!

Pros: atmosphere, refreshments, parking, customer service, it is a whole package of good stuff

Cons: none I can think of

Best Personal Haircare on Peninsula

by tahoesierra

I have frequented Terry DeMarco's Barberia for over 20 years! In two decades, my hair style and tastes have changed...OFTEN. Countless people have asked me who does my hair. I have referred numerous people to the Barberia and specifically to Irene. Irene has done my color for 20 years! She has humored my various tastes as a redhead, dirty blonde and brunette. I've had subtle highlights, chunky highlights and a single blonde streak around my face. ALWAYS people want to know ...'Who does your color?' 'Irene at the Barberia in Foster City.' She is professional and patient. She always keeps me informed of the latest products available. Irene is warm and friendly. She has the ability to make you feel that you are her most important client. Irene is more than my colorist. She is a friend. I would recommend her to my closest friends! Donna Kenison

best place in the world

by iloveliza

what can i say? liza is by far a genious of hair color, cut and style. she is a great listener and has the coolest russian accent i have ever heard. she is very straight forward, and does not sugar coat her opinion. she will tell you how it is. if she thinks something will not look good, she will not be afraid to tell you. this type of honesty saved my hair style and color. i took her advice to try something new after always having the same style and color, and i have never felt more beautiful.
the salon was amazing and i love that they had several pitchers of water containing things like cucumbers, strawberries, lemon and oranges. it was very refreshing, and they even have a cappacino machine and that is way cool!
everyone is really nice and willing to work together to make sure that every client is happy. everyone always seems like they are in a good mood and want to be there.
even for someone who just needs a simple haircut, i say come to this place because the atmosphere makes all the difference. you cant help but smile when you are around the people that work here, especially liza.

Pros: happy staff, lots of parking, easy to get to, great service, high quality of work

Cons: sometimes noisy, everything else is allllllll good

Terrible

by yelena13

My last week's appointment was a total disaster. I came in for color and cut with Irene. I had to wait for about 20 mins while Irene was finishing with the customer who came before me. Finally, after I got my color and it was time to wash it off Irene already had another customer waiting, so she asked another girl to wash my hair. After washing my hair that person made me sit in the washing area for 20 mins while Irene was cutting hair of the customer that came in. When I finally went back to Irene?s station I had to wait another 15 mins while Irene was finishing blow-drying that customer?s hair. Finally, it was my turn. But after making me wait for so long, Irene did not even have decency to spend time on my hair-cut. She super-quickly cut and styled my hair since in the middle of working with me she was told she had another customer waiting.

Barberia is the place to go for color!

by blondie1291

When I moved back home from college four years ago I went to several different places on the peninsula and in san francisco. I have medium to dark brown hair naturally but blonde compliments me more, so you can imagine the horror that I was put through with other salons. I would have orange in my hair... a ring of brass around my scalp... chunks of weird colors. It was a nightmare! I had heard good things about barberia and went in there expecting to get what i had gotten for the past year and a half. I met with Antonia who sized up the color and damage of my hair. Not only did she fix the mistakes the other salons had made, but she nursed my hair back to health (without me purchasing any of their in store products!)! I go to her often and even if I don 't like the end result she will fix it immediately. Everywhere I go I receive compliments on my color!! I have referred three friends and two family members there. Everyone there has been so kind and courteous. I have received a few haircuts from there as well and they have been great. I recommend this place for their knowledgeable stylists, great customer service, and relaxing atmosphere.

Pros: competitive prices, knowledgeable staff, wonderful end result.

Cons: There are none!

Happy hair is here again!

by mammamia0131

After leaving Barberia, I realized it was the first time EVER I was in a good mood after getting my hair done. Typically stylists seem like they don't know how to cut my hair, and I have had a long string of bad haircuts to prove it. On top of that, I had severely damaged my hair with box color. But after my first trip to TJ I am so excited that I have finally found I stylist I can't wait to go back to! He took the time to really think about what would be best for my hair, and the haircut is perfect qnd the color is even. Throughout the whole process he made me feel extremely comfortable and was very professional. I will definitely be going back soon and be recommending TJ to anyone with curly or straight hair!

Cool new hair

by emmapal

I just went to Barberia (better on week days / crazy busy
on saturdays) and had color with Lan who was super friendly and did a
great job. Then had a cut with T.J who also was really nice and did a
very good job with my hair cut. TJ was also helpful with giving
styling tips. Everyone at the salon was so nice, No attitude here at
all! Mindy washed my hair and gave an awesome head massage; she was
very nice and helpful, I was offered tea, Cucmber water, magazines...
Overeall, this is an excellent salon. I have been to a bunch with high
ratings, and in terms of competitive price and great service, I will
return to Barberia.

Love this salon

by abbywain

I am a spa junkie and ex hair stylist. When I moved to the Bay Area a year ago, I tried a bunch of different salons. None got it right except Barberia.

I chose Barberia because of the fact that they have two stylists who are members of the Board Of Certified Hair Colorist (as a former stylist, I know this is an elite group of experts).

I am a little unnerved by the recent reviews of this place. I don't agree at all with them : The staff is mostly made up of younger people, with senior stylists there showing them the ropes. All salons have new stylists go thru a training program which is based in on-the-job learning. Most salons reserve this type of training to the daytime, when the salon is less busy. After doing some research, I found out that Barberia is legendary in the area for their extensive training program and new stylists want to be a part of that. Also, Balyage IS a process where the color is applied farther from the root. It is a French technique started by Jacque Dessange in Paris and offers a more natural look than root-to-tip highlights.

Anyhoo, back to my 1st time: I have thick brown hair which I have been highliting to golden for years and most places couldn't replace the job my stylist in New York did. Liza not only got my color exactly right, she convinced me to try a new cut after I promised myself I would grow my hair out. Liza reassured me in her cool Russian accent that what I had wasn't working for my face and sent me off to have my haircut by the hottest young thing to cross my eyes since - well since a long time, I am married now! This guy (forget his name) gave me a simple, and great cut. The salon is large, clean, bright and airy. The staff are competent and friendly. Little extras like free hand massages and berry infused water were great touches. This salon is very busy, and lively. I liked it, but if you want a more spa like experience, go in the morning during the week (my second time I went on a Wed. AM - very quiet).

Pros: Great colorists, friendly staff, easy to maintain cut

Cons: schedule way in advance if you aren't flexible, no spa (but waxing/ make-up avail.)

Worst salon I have ever been to!!!

by 3graces

It makes me sick to see how highly recommended this salon is. I had a haircut and highlights done there a year ago and I still feel the urge to inform the public of the horrendous job they did. The stylist said she was going to use a new french technique called "baliage" or something to that extent, but it basically just looked like she was leaving an extra inch of root before starting the highlights. On top of that she was attempting to show her staff this new technique and without my permission proceeded to calling 7 girls to gather around me to watch. This is not a beauty school and I am not a guinea pig so don't treat me like one! My haircut came out awful as well and was not even. The cost was ridiculous and they pressure you to purchase their products on the threat that your color will turn brassy if you didn't use the product they were pushing.

Slightly above average...

by alina555

Went to Barberia based on the stellar reviews. Maybe I came in with high expectations, but I thought my overall experience was just so-so. They get high marks on having super friendly staff and a clean facility...but my whole haircut experience was underwhelming. The shampoo, cut, and style felt rushed; my cut looked no better than when I used to go to Supercuts when I was young. I'm used to getting a better experience for the same price at other salons. Stylists and clients all seemed to be in the 50+ age bracket....maybe that's where the disconnect is. Perhaps I'll love this place in twenty years!

Pros: friendly staff, clean facility

Cons: lack of creativity, rushed feeling

Friendly people and easy to get to!

by jenneez

I got there and was surprised at how many stations and people were there! It was a Saturday, but a holiday weekend. I saw Irene who was talkitive, fun and was fine with my roots that I was leaving due to being pregnant! She also just cut, I didn't really know what I wanted but wanted more of a style since I could not color my hair. I ended with a long shagish style that is easy to do and fun.
I also got a free hand massage since I was a first time customer and also I was recommended there by a friend who received a $15 off her next visit coupon.
I plan to return and continue to see Irene who says she will help grow my hair during the pregnancy!
PS. It is in a small shopping area so super easy to get to and tons of parking!

Pros: Easy to find, parking, price and friendly staff

Cons: Busy-don't expect a spa like atmosphere. I didn't mind but thought it was going to be.

BEST for EVERY hair need!!!

by sokolata

plenty of parking, the stylist dont work on commission so they are honest if you need a full highlight or a half highlight or a deep conditioner, etc- they dont push services OR products... not too pricey for what you are getting...

where to begin?! I have jet black hair and for years, i could never get a nice brown or blonde color... always orange, red or brassy shades... until I started going to Barbaria, which is the BEST color salon. Antonia, my colorist is great with getting the exact color you want... shes young and very talented... when i needed a down do for a wedding, Antonia recommended another stylist who copied the exact hairstyle from a picture i gave her... I was just as impressed with my hair and recieved sooo many compliments... ive referred 5 friends to Barberia and ALL are impressed... I promise you wont be dissappointed... they're all good but i recommend Antonia for color or cut!

Pros: parking, friendly stylists, cute salon

Cons: no spa

BIG mistake

by mlmc13

I have been going to a highly skill stylist for the past 3 years, located in downtown San Francisco, which is about 65 minutes away from where I live.
I was desperately in need of a tram but do not have the time to go to my stylist; after reading all the positive reviews, I decided to give Barberia a try, since its in my neighborhood. I thought how bad could it be?.Boy, was I ever so wrong.
After 20 minutes/ $74 charges on my visa, I was send away with a 12 dollars haircut, I really dont know if that stylist knows what style means.

What a BIG mistake.

After moving here from Boston about a year ago, I had several color and style disasters despite using highly recommended, extremely expensive salons.

I stumbled on Barberia because my wonderful colorist/stylist, Madeline, is a certified colorist, and I was tired of poor results. Once I found her, my search was over. I later found out that several of my friends went to the same salon and were equally thrilled with the services provided.

This was my BEST hair experience in the last 5 years! I came into the salon with hair that was horrible damaged from Very Bad cuts and worse color attemps.
Location gorgeous and relaxing,by the water.Staff was friendly and not Uptight. Loved the candles.
My stylist, originally from Peru..was fantastic!. She never did anything before asking, Never had an Attitude. Treated me very well.Would frequently check on my comfort.Other than that, she didn't talk much..she was too busy getting my Disaster Hair right.I liked that. I am so happy.I look great and feels great. I have paid the same amount of money-200 dollars-in the past and been Upset with my hair. This time, I got my Hair back. The only thing I guess I missed out on was the hand or neck massage. Not only is the salon beautiful, so am I after my new cut and color!! My stylists Madeline and Antonia did a great job and really put alot of thought into what would not only look good on me, but what I would actually be able to maintain by myself. And all of the people there are so nice!! I am used to going to places that are snooty and sacrifice a good time to get a great look, but I got both here.... and the shampoo OMG the head massage! I would definitely recommend Barberia to anyone who wants constant compliments on their hair and friendly atmosphere. :)

I have gotten my hair done at the Barbaria a number of times and each time I leave very satisfied. The stylists can not only cut and color hair very well but they listen to what I want and are able to answer any question I might have about how the style would look on me. I am always helped right away and offered water, coffee or tea while I wait for my stylist. I would reccommend The Barbaria to anyone who asks.

My stylist at the Barberia gave me a haircut and highlights and everybody I've run into has complemented me on my new look! My stylist was very friendly and attentive, I love my new hair and the price is right! I can't believe how much money I've spent in the past for far less satisfaction! I would highly recommend the services at the Barberia, you leave feeling great! (Especially after a complentary hand massage!) I'll certainly be going back!

Pros: nice people, great atmosphere, complementary stuff!
