Stylish sushi in an ambient, upbeat environment only scratches the edge of the Blowfish Sushi surface. Our creative rolls, such as the upcoming Toshi Koshi- which includes crab, spicy tuna and tempura pieces topped with seared albacore, avocado and wasabi tobiko- will challenge your definition of sushi ingredients while massaging your palette into various dimensions of bliss. In October, 2007, Blowfish will be introducing a new menu with a more comprehensive wine and sake list, an enhanced cocktail selection, and an array of dazzling new rolls, appetizers, and desserts.

The Scene
Japanese anime merges with SF-style grungy chic in this hard-edged hipster spot. Scenes from futuristic films flash on the flat screen behind a trio of punked-out sushi chefs at the bar, while those in the dining room huddle close--squinting to see their food and trying to catch a word between the techno beats.

The Food

Cleverly named, somewhat strange combinations are the menu's specialty. Appetizers, such as the pyramid of salmon and tuna tartares, taste as good as it looks. There's also thinly sliced, ponzu-sauced Halibut Bouquet. Head for the Spider Maki--a pleasingly plump, crispy rendition of the classic. The artfully prepared rolls make a pleasant meal, whether a traditional spicy tuna rendition or a trendy Super Dynamite stuffed with lightly fried yellowtail, albacore, salmon, scallion and chili sauce.

Key Points

  • Sushi
  • Appetizers
  • Hip, trendy atmosphere

The Inside Scoop

  1. What to Drink - Blowfish offers a selection of rare and original sake cocktails, including the Sweet Leilani (sake, peach juice, crushed mint and cranberry juice).
  2. Save Money - The lunch menu features box meals with diner's choice of two tasty treats (from teriyaki to tataki), rice, miso soup, and salad for a surprisingly reasonable $8.75.

Great place to go for a good evening and interesting sushi. However, if you like tasting the fish in your rolls, you will find that it is often overpowered by the sauces.

Ratings_icons Sushi to Gag For

Great staff, awesome sake cocktails, somewhat hip atmosphere but that's about it. Don't believe the hype...unless your idea of sushi is lots of rice, some raw fish and anything else goes as long as it sounds cool and funky. Most of the menu looks good on paper but the food is disappointing to the palette. The Pyramid of Tartar was all avocado and hardly any tartar and the accompanying potato chips totally sucked. The sashimi was fresh but that's standard for any decent sushi resteraunt. The terrible spicy tuna roll was topped with a spicy sauce that tasted like spicy thousand island dressing! Some maki rolls certainly sound inventive but taste so blah...like the 1920th roll. If you want hip sushi, go to Tokoyo A Go Go or if you truly want 'sushi to die for', go to Kirala in Berkeley. Don't waste your money at this place.

Ratings_icons Good sushi, top-notch service

It's pretty tough to find the superlative sushi place in a city just teeming with great places. But Blowfish is definitely good, a little on the pricey side, but good variety and quality. The service, however, is fantastic. I put my arm in my spicy tuna and got sauce all over my shirt. Immediately, without my even asking, there was a glass of club soda and a rag at my elbow.

It's the little things.

Great sushi and I didn't think the prices were any higher than any other sushi restaurant. Sushi is generally expensive and this place didn't seem any higher priced than others. The surprise was the wait. It's a good idea to make a reservation all of the time. They are even busy on Monday and Tuesday nights.

Pros: Variety, Unusual

Cons: Crowded
