For nearly a century, the landmark address of 2100 Van Ness Avenue has hosted some of the finest meals on the West Coast. When Harris? Restaurant opened in 1984, in the old location of Grisons, it continued the rich tradition of luxurious dining in a comfortable sophisticated environment. In fact, Harris? was ranked as one of the nation?s Top 10 Steak houses by the Wine Spectator. Our sister restaurant is Cacti Grill located in Novato, California http://www.cactigrill.com/

The Scene
The throwback decor has the trappings of a venerable steakhouse, with oversized half-moon booths, a skylight banquet room, starched white tablecloths and a nostalgic mural of rural California dominating one wall. Amiable waiters coddle a clientele of Midwestern emigres and carnivorous tourists.

The Food
Like the decor, this traditional steakhouse menu makes no concessions to the modern palate, unabashedly celebrating monstrous slabs of meat and stiff martinis. Garlicky Caesar salad is crowned with a whole anchovy, and time-honored shrimp cocktail is served with a lightly spicy cocktail sauce. Expertly cooked mesquite-grilled steaks are the kitchen's stock-in-trade. The Harris cut is a hulking, bone-in New York that's nicely marbled; the buttery filet mignon is achingly tender. Culinary relics like melt-in-your-mouth prime rib, steak Diane, and steak paillard in cognac demi-glace also make appearances. Desserts include brioche bread pudding and creme brulee.

Key Points

  • Private Room Dining
  • Live Music Thur-Sat Nights
  • Valet Parking

The Inside Scoop

  1. The Extras - An extensive wine list predictably carries many reds, including varietals from France, Italy, Australia and California. Scotch drinkers can choose from nearly a dozen aged brands.
  2. Save Money - Dine in the Pacific Lounge and enjoy a three-course meal for $38, including Caesar salad, smoked salmon, prime rib, New York steak or grilled swordfish and a dessert.

Ratings_icons best steaks in the city

Fantastic steaks in a classy but non-stuffy atmosphere. Very pricey, but it's worth saving up for a splurge once a year.

What can you say...this place serves fantastic meat. In fact the best meat I've ever had was the time antelope was the special. The setting is upscale and the conversations are muted in the elegant dining room. The only downside are the still sky high prices. But when you need a good steak, it's well worth it.

Pros: great beef

Cons: pricey

Ratings_icons Surprisingly good

I didn't know what to expect b/c SF is not a steak town, IMHO. I ordered the Harris steak, which was terrific and more flavorful and tender than my husband's filet mignon. Caesar salad is very good -- the real deal with the anchovy on top. The Harris martini is a generous pour but should have been icy cold. Service is very efficient.

Expensive but GREAT! I love this place. The best steak I've had in San Francisco, and that's no joke.

I have had nothing but excellent steaks and great service at Harris'. The only time that I had a problem was when a steak was over cooked and the waiter took it away, brought another and offered me a free desert or after-dinner drink!

Pros: Great steak, Great Ambience

Cons: Expensive Wine List

Ratings_icons Dismal Service is a Shame!

dclong

When the restaurant still enforced its dress code, the ambience, the food and the service were what one would expect of one of the best restaurants in town.

When the dress requirement was dropped, so was the service which now borders on the amateurish (on a good evening) to the embarrassingly bad on other nights.

Its a major shame! Especially at those prices.

Pros: None

Cons: Lousy service

Ratings_icons Not The Best Steak House in Town!

ninerfan

Very nice setting.Food tasted very good. Our order was accurate and was initially the service was good but tappered off very badly as the night went along.Had to ask for refills on tea and had to ask for a dessert menu from a different waiter that we flagged down. Then when our waitress showed up she asked in a surprised tone"Oh you want to order dessert?".Rather go to Mortons where service is always great.

The main dining room is the best! Quieter than near the bar (but the bar is great for martinis before dining). Always excellent meat, cooked exactly the way you want it. Large portions.

Pros: tender steak, ambiance, large portions

Cons: bad parking - valet

Ratings_icons Not What We'd Hoped

rbliven

The food was OK, but for the money I've had much better. The biggest problem we had was the service. Our drinks weren't refilled, we had to ask for everything, and we even had to ask where the heck our waitress went. This place is nothing special.

Pros: Steak, Seating

Cons: Service, Deserts

Ratings_icons Diner steak served by professionals

scroddum

Both times the same -- Service and ambiance were great. The food -- not. The "Kobe" steak tasted like a Safeway ribeye. If I'm going to drop serious coin on a steak in S.F. it'll be at Morton's.

Pros: good service

Cons: meat quality

Ratings_icons Jazz,Gin and Good Feelings

oldpro

Anne Harris represented a bygone era that no others are able to resurect, she was "it." High ceilings, wall murals, private dinning rooms, Jazz in the bar, real drinks made with hard liquor, and discrete lighting. Couple this with a menu of enjoyable american food and an above average wine list--remember the 1986 Berenger Private Reserve Cabernet for $35.00, even after the Wine Spectator rated in the #1 wine in 1989--I brought a few bottles home and still may have one or two. The service has always been appropriate and professional, noise level is low. What more can we ask for in a special night out place? I celebrated my 1st wedding anniversary there and hope it is there for our 50th. I have four adorable children, but until they are teenagers, would not burden other diners with their presense and hope that other parents have the same sensibility.

Wow- every time I go to Harris' it just gets better! This time I had the Filet Mignon Rossini which it a Filet topped with Foie Gras and a Cabernet truffle sauce. Rich- but soo delicious! The wine list is awesome, and the service is flawless! You must eat here!

Ratings_icons I Have a Challenge For You!

philip_jackson

Typically my wife and I joke and judge a restaurant by testing how long it takes to get a refill on your water glass. Our glasses never made it past being half empty and believe me we tried our hardest to empty that glass. This is an example of why Harris' is a terrific place to eat, since few places provide quality service and attention to the customer. My wife and I both had the Pepper Steak which was excellent. The restaurant and staff are terrific. If you decide to dine here for a special occassion, mention this when making your reservation. The price is a little hefty, however, you'll leave with a terrific feeling. Go ahead, I challenge you to empty your water glass!

Pros: Excellent steak, Superior staff, Attention to details

Ratings_icons It's the best

Harris Restaurant is the best beef in SF -- no question about that. They don't try to hide the beef quality under covers as some other places do. You get beef that is cooked to your request to perfection, good sides, and good service.

Ratings_icons Best steak, period.

So many reasons to go, but of course I keep going back for the best steak in town. Bring friends, because they love groups and do a wonderful job accomodating you with a couple of servers.

Ok...this place is not cheap, so make sure that you have the money to go all out. The fillet is amazing. They have a wonderful selection of wines. I recommend a martini to kick it all off in style! The clams are an amazing appetizer. They have really yummy creme brule. The service is the best around. We always take our out of town guests here. It is a special place.

Pros: excellent service, great food, the best steak

Cons: expensive
