After a week+ of camping my wife Nancy and I were leaving the Hendy Woods for the coast, caravaning in 2 cars (had a work commitment in Sacramento) up the Philo/Greenwood Road when she pulled off suddenly. I thought she was having trouble, but she just asked if I had just heard "that" on the radio; I hadn't, because I was getting zero reception on mine. Then she said that Johnny Winter, Edgar Winter, and Rick Derringer were playing the "First Annual Navarro Blues Festival" (or some such title), the next week, on Labor Day, at the Navarro General Store! I wondered what she had been smoking, but she swore that's what she just heard. Well, we got done watering our trees down below Elk (We're going to be neighbors some day! Yes!), and instead of heading back home down Hwy 1, decided to double back and see if this could possibly be true. When we got to the Store and piled out we saw all these pictures of famous musicians all around--Johnny Winter, John Lee Hooker, Joe Louis Walker (and this was after passing by an amazing larger-than-life statue of Johnny carved out of (what else?) redwood. I'm thinking there must be something in the air affecting my perception--after all, this stop looks like not much more than a bend in the road on Hwy 128 in the lovely (but don't tell anyone) Anderson Valley, and certainly not a place that could put on a show like this! No neon, no billboards, no huge crowds--"just" redwoods--lots of them. Well, after meeting the owner, a most unassuming gentleman by the name of Dave (thank you, Erika, for the intro), he assured us it was true, and he certainly didn't need to twist our arms much to convince us to come all the way back for this one--Wouldn't/couldn't miss it. Even a barbeque. And being with a massive crowd of 500! I don't know you pull off this kind of stuff, Dave, but are we glad you do! Thanks, and keep doing it--please! Makes life worthwhile. HGK

I am a local, here in Navarro. In the redwoods. Yes, it is pretty amazing. We have had some world class music, not more than a quarter mile walk away, in this funny little town, pop. 67.
I guess we are a well kept secret, for the most part, but word does get out. Roy Rogers tonight. Subdudes a few weeks ago. Dave Dart opening for Johnny Winters, Sept. 7th. 2009 Yes, you can get groceries and food too, local Roederer sparkling wine.

Last September 2008, I heard that Johnny Winter was headlining the SF Blues Festival on Sunday. I was thinking of going to see him there. Then, I looked at his tour schedule, and saw that on the Friday before, he was going to be playing at "The Navarro Amphitheatre" in Navarro, CA. I had never heard of such a place. I called the Navarro General Store Friday about 4:00 pm, and talked to a guy named Dave. He confirmed that he was playing that night from 7:00 till 10:00 pm, and I could get a ticket at the store. Googled a map from Sonoma to Navarro, and got there in 2 hrs. Had a killer BBQ dinner, and then saw The Johnny Winter Band get down for a few hours, outside under the Redwoods, in the coolest little amphitheatre, with only about a few hundred other lucky fans! I had a great time. Last weekend 04-18-09, I am heading to Fort Bragg and my route takes me through Navarro. My girl and I stop, and I go into the Navarro General Store to get some munchies and some coldies, and Dave was working. I told him that I had been there last year to see Johnny, and I asked him if any other cool shows were coming up. Dig this, on Labor Day, 09-04-09, there is going to be a cool show! The Rick Derringer Band, The Edgar Winter Group, and The Johnny Winter Band. He said Johnny will come out and play some songs with Edgar and his band, and I'm sure Edgar will probably do the same when Johnny performs, and maybe Rick Derringer too, on rhythm guitar and occasional lead riffs, just like the good old days! I tell you, Dave is "The Man". Thanks Dave for the tickets! See you then.Steve Covey from Napa, CA.
