Average space, world-class DJs

Ruby Skye is one of a handful of clubs that get really big electronic and DJ acts on a fairly regular basis.
I've seen a bunch of DJs here including Mark Farina and the Crystal Method. It's pretty medium sized with not much seating other than in the VIP areas. The VIP is so-so. The balcony view is pretty cool since the space used to be an old theater. The VIP service was pretty spotty, but that's clubbing for you.
The sound system is pretty good and of course loud.
I pretty much only go for the music so I can't really rate it in terms of other clubbing goals but I can say it's not as much of a 'meat market' as some place like 1015. The kinds of acts coming through kind of give you an idea of what kinds of people come here. It's mostly house and techno which means it's not a hip-hop 'in da club' venue nor is it usually a candy-glowstick raver affair.
All in all it's not a bad place that gets pretty big acts. There's no sort of bouncer type exclusivity BS so that's nice. If you don't look homeless and have money they'll let you in.

The great thing about RubySkye is that they always invite well-known world class DJs for show on the weekends, like Tiesto, Paul Van Dyke, Ferry Corsten, Mark Farina, Steve Lawler, Deep Dish.. you named it. First, you really have to appreciate the world of Techno/House/Trance/Electronic music to go to this club, otherwise you are wasting your money. Second, Drinks is around 7-20 bucks, but you will get your money worth, and well this is right in the heart of downtown SF. I wouldnt be surprised if Ruby Skye is probably on the list of the best club in the world. You will also find a mixed of crowd in this club, Europe, Asian, and some American too.
PROS: Great Sound System, World Class DJs, Open till 3:30am

It is unfair for me to review a nightclub because that is not my sign. The idea of queueing up for loud music and crowds does not appeal to me. I guess I have space issues.

The DJ was the best part...music was great, but the place was hotter than....and the $20 cover was extremely steep even in a town like San Francisco...and $340 for VIP booths that only includes one bottle of liquor and 6 passes in is crazy. The night we went, our waiter is automatically guaranteed at least a $40 tip so it was obvious he did not feel any urgency in getting us our drinks...I had to ask for water 3 times...that is unacceptable.

One of the best places to have fun
by NorCalGian
Ruby Skye in San Francisco is an incredible nightclub in the bay area. Located in downtown San Francisco and I had one of the best club experience of my life here.
There may be some negative reviews about the bouncers below, but they must have changed it. Because I didn't have to wait in line too long for will call and the bouncers were friendly and didn't mind answering any questions I had. They do get a little tough, but that's because people are stupid when they are drunk.
Inside, the club is beautiful with a big dance floor on the main floor. The music and djs are terrific and the people are beautiful and everybody is having fun.
Ruby Skye is a definite place to check out in the Bay Area.
Pros: Awesome music, decor, location, bartenders
Cons: can get a loud

Gorgeous nightclub with top international DJ talent
by flirtyone
Ruby Skye is San Francisco's #1 nightclub. This is the best place to go to see the world's top 100 DJs spinning on any given weekend. The music format is house/electronic in the main room, and hip-hop in the upstairs smoking lounge. The decor and lighting in this converted historic theater are top notch and very impressive. It is a big club, and has the best sound system in the city, so it is loud and hard to talk in here. But come to dance until 4am and enjoy the stiff drinks, go-go dancers and performance artists. Bottle service makes your night extra special and helps you avoid the crowds and give you a little more space of your own.
Pros: music, ambience, decor, djs, afterhours, location

The WORST door etiquette EVER!
by HappyBear
Absolutely the WORST!!! I've been to all the hot clubs in London, NYC, Miami and LA, but Ruby Skye is by far the WORST club to deal with..Rule # 1: DO NOT BUY TICKETS. If you buy tickets, be prepared to wait for 1+ hours in the Will Call/Guestlist line. Watch the GA people roll on in hours before you. By the way, when is there a line for ticketholders and guestlist?!?! (UPDATE: we found out that if you can't get in by the time the DJ plays- call TICKETWEB, They will REFUND your tickets because of Ruby Skye's greediness.) Rule #2: Do NOT do Guestlist. This is a joke. Sometimes Ruby Skye sends you an email that says you are on the guestlist, but you are really not. The joke is on you. Oh and wait, it gets better, the bouncer will yell at you because he is not smart enough to offer you the option to pay to get in - instead he yells at you to "Get the F**k out and leave". What kind of place doesn't want to take your money when there was a mistake on the guestlist?!? Oh wait, they must be making it all by taking ticket sales AND by taking in GA $$ at the same time. GENIUS! Wish I could run a SCAM like this.
Pros: Great Djs/Music
Cons: HORRIBLE DOOR MEN and TICKET SERVICE
Posted 11/29/08
Pleased with every aspect.
by scuevas08
Okay, first of all, this is my first review on a club/lounge. Ruby Skie was awsome from the speed of the lines, to the friendly bouncers, to the hostes, the music, drinks, etc. This was our first time coming to this place. We walked up to the line thinking we're going to be here forever...not the case. Line moved along quickly and when we got to the bouncers he greated us, very friendly and he allowed our group to go in together! How many clubs do you go to and they only let a number of people thru the door, sometimes seperating your group. The hostes was very friendly as well. The music was AMAZING! The sound quality impecable! I perposley stoud infront of the subwoofer to get a feel....i could actually stand infront of the speaker and still be able to have a conversation with my friend. In other words, the music was load enough and you could feel the base from the beats, yet so perfectly adjusted that i could still converse with my friend infront of the speaker....wow! The interior of the place was very nice...hard to describe...you have to see it. The bartenders very friendly, but i think the absolute best part of this club is the fact that there are all kinds of people, different ages, couples, punk rockers, tourists, and everyone went to enjoy the show from the DJ and minded their own business!!!!!! Some places you go to and you cant walk around without having someone staring you down...much more mature atmosphere.
Pros: Ambience, Music, Sound Quality, Show
Cons: A bit expensive, but worth every penny.

by DannyBoy415
Went to this club last weekend with my girl. Everything was amazing! Drinks, bartenders and the music! Man we were groovin! Man my head hurt the next day! All I can say is go check this place out. This is where the beautiful people get down and get funky! (although my girl didn't like when she saw me checkin out some of the other HOT chicks there!) Go catch your groove at this amazing place! You'll feel like a rock star!
Pros: Best drinks west of the Mississippi! Great DJ'S! Great Music! Parking closeby
Cons: Last call should be later, but that's a state law I think?

Amazing CLUB!!!
by akajj83
Ok, I don't know were to start, perfect sound system, the crowed is their to enjoy the DJ's and get their dance on!, The bars inside are very large (3 of them) and a friendly helpful staff. Yeah the music can be loud, but for a amazing night blowing your ears out it's worth the damage. There's a cool indoor smoking room on the 2nd floor with some hiphop beats. Buy your tickets online so you don't have to wait in line as long or just show up a little early becuase the crowd tends to pick up around 11:30ish. I've been to this club too many times to remember and i can't wait to show up again with friends.
Pros: music, crowd, drinks
Cons: line outside like most clubs

Great Club in SF!
by Manofmustard
Never written a review of a dance club, but as a live sound engineer, the sound system is fantastic. If only all the shows I did had a system this great. But I degress....
I am mostly writing this review to dispute the 2 most recent reviews of the club. I visited the club on July 4th (yeah I know-independence day) to see Sasha & Bad Boy Bill. Never once was the crowd rude. Plenty of people bumped into me, and nearly all apologized. Sure there were people who were drunk....but come on...this is a dance club. How the heck do you think they make money? Surely not from ticket sales...
Speaking of the bar, I never had to wait more than a minute to get my drink, and they were quite potent. Definitely should not have had the last one that night....
I never had a problem getting in. Yes I bought the tickets by Ticketweb, but had them at Will Call. I don't think I waited more 3 minutes to get into the club. I arrived around 11pm.
I really like the club overall. Never had a problem with the staff at all-none of the horror stories I have seen here on City Search. The staff appeared relaxed and generally seemed to be having a good time.
Pros: Sound System, Staff, DJ's, Dancers, Music
Cons: Last Call should be later

DON'T BUY TICKETS EVER!!!
by tarabear6
DON'T BUY TICKETS TO ANY RUBY SKYE EVENT! If you print your tickets, they make you wait in the GA line. We asked if we could wait in the WILL CALL line (cause it was shorter) and they said they would refuse ticket holders and put them back in the GA line. We waited 1 1/2 hours last night in the GA Line and moved 10 feet. WILL CALL was even worse. We spoke with the owner of Ruby Sky and he said he hated working with TicketWEB because "that's not how Ruby Sky works". THEN DON"T SELL TICKETS!! Its very disappointing because a lot of great DJs come to that place. Now I know why the GA line is so long!
Pros: Great music and atmosphere
Cons: Poor service and an owner who wants to take your money via TICKETWEB and not let you in.

WORST club in SF ....
by sfteki
got invited to go to the famous White Party and had the worst night out in my 7 years of living in SF ....
(1) very rude crowd, probably drunk, on ecstasy, tourists (or all of the above) - and by very rude I mean as in having two drinks thrown off my hand by people walking around (no apologies), elbowed really hard several times by violent dancers (if you can call that dancing), being groped while walking out of the dance floor, having a couple of meat-heads following two of my buzzed friends around to see if they could get some action
(2) extremely loud sound system (playing house music), you could barely hear yourself talk, let alone other people
(3) understaffed bar, had to wait forever to get drinks (which I didn't get to enjoy thanks to the crowd)
if you enjoy any/all of the above, this is definitely the place for you...
The one star goes for the nice decoration of the venue - classical don't judge a book by it's cover .....
Pros: decoration
Cons: crowd, crowd, crowd, sound system, bar

Ruby Skye...
by timame
Ruby Skye has great music... but the bouncers and management has no sense of what the hell they are doing ... If you have a "will call" ticket u gotta wait for half an hour more, if u dont then u gotta pay 10-20 bucks more. If bouncers feel the place is crowded and they can pack more people they may throw you out claiming u r drunk ... if u r not drunk but u dont look dangerous, then in any case u might get thrown out cuz the bouncers are bored .... in short, u r paying atleast 20 bux in advance with no gaurantee of any good time ...
Pros: great music
Cons: good chance of getting throw out if u dont look like u can give em a tough time for throwing u out..

Ruby Skye is not only a very classy Club But features some of the best Trance D.J's in the world. This club has some of the best acts in the city! Their dancers wear some of the best costumes I have seen. Ruby's environment and security keep it a very safe and fun dance club. I should know I have been a regular there for 3+ yrs. I will continue going there as long as my legs permit. I love and have become close friends to alot of their people.
Pros: ambience, D.J.'s, music, dancers, Security
Cons: closes at 4+ a.m. 2 bad it cant stay open 24(7).

Nice Music but bad Customer Service for VIP and overpriced.
by mrjswift
The music was good, they had this great violinist who play to the music being played. The VIP treatment is way below par. Do not pay for a private table and go VIP because it will end up costing you a fortune and the Bouncers and Customer reps there are terrible and will kick you out early if you look like your tired and taking a break on the couches. One Bouncer was very rude and was obviously suffering form a small man complex. He said his name was Tumday which was probably made up because he did not want to be held accountable for his actions. Overall I do not recommend this club. And if you do plan to go to this club go with regular admission and don?t pay extra just to be treated badly.
Pros: Good music.
Cons: Bad service for VIP and expensive.

Over Priced & Empty
by dawnsf
I really am not sure why anyone would pay $20 to get in this club??
1. We got there at 11pm and waited in line for 30 minutes only to get in an empty club -- They play the not
so cool hold the line gimmick
2. Once inside the drinks were over priced - $12 for a martini?
3. 99% of the people there were on a club bus tour and really were quite drunk and rude.
4. The music was just ok if you enjoy extremely loud techno / house type music.
Needless to say we will not be back....
Pros: No need for AC!
Cons: Empty, Overpriced

A VERY trendy but beautiful venue
by gaijinsan
and the sound system is one of the best stateside i've ever heard....just be sure to wear earplugs (unless you don't care about hearing loss, of course). most of the biggest headliners around the world dj here but if you've seen em once it's not too different when they show up again and again every so many months. the crowd is ok for the most part but on busy nights (usually saturdays) be prepared to get stepped on by a lot of bad dancers and partiers under various forms of...er, influence. i recommend this as a place to put on your 'to do" list but otherwise, nothing worth hitting up over and over (i get in free due to knowing the right people).
Pros: great sound system, international dj's
Cons: LOUD sound system, commercial international dj's, rude clientele

This is one of the worst clubs in the city
by rjohnson1
This club must spend a ton of money on advertising and it is not working! They should put the money towards the sound system! I decided to give the club a second chance last weekend and again had a terrible time. They played old techno music all night long...urgh... The club had a line outside and after paying $20 to get in you realized there were more people outside than inside! What waste of money!
Pros: Location
Cons: Music is terrible, Costly

best club i have seen in San Francisco
by cristin343
This club has it all. Great interior, the cover charge weeds out the crowd, awesome music, tons of room, friendly staff. Everything a nightclub should be. They let hot girls go right through to the front of the line! So inside there is definately some eye candy!! : ) the men are a little too aggressive, take your brother or a guy friend to go with you as your shield. My girlfriends and i were so happy when we found Ruby Skye! We will be back!! (not recommended to those who dont like house music or think its ok to pretend that their bra is a wallet) hahaha!! um hello?
Pros: the atmosphere is enchanting

by mommybooty
I get my girls together for a GNO every couple of months and we rock our a$$e$ all night long. We NEVER MISS a night with DJ DAN. Get on the guest list to avoid lines and get star treatment every time! It's crowded, so expect a lot of hot bodies rubbing up against you--whether you like it or not!
Pros: Great music to dance to!
Cons: Sound system is loud.

Touristy, always crowded, not the best place
by writerevie
I've been here several times, and not once did I have a good time. The place gets super crowded and the music, well, it sounds like they're playing the same song all night long. There's only one dance floor downstairs, if you like being elbowed from all sides while trying to dance, this is the place for you. There are many tourists here and the cover charge is ridiculous (usually $20) for a night of mediocre music and people.
Pros: Decor
Cons: Parking, service, music

great dancing nights
by audreyjl
I'm not really into the club scene so not sure how this compares to others in the city but I think it's a great place when you really want to just go out and dance. It's huge. The lines never seem too long to get in and you never have to wait too long for a drink. The music is great to really dance to and there are a lot of different areas to chill if that's what you're looking for. We went for NYE last year and had a blast. Not someplace I'd go all the time but fun every once in a while.
Pros: dance and atmosphere - great set up

San Fransisco + Dance = Ruby Skye
by styo88
I'm from Hawaii and I had never seen anything like Ruby Skye. The music they play is SO San Fransisco; it's nothing but dance. If you've ever listened to energy 92.7 in SF then you know just what to expect. I LOVE dance, so I considered that the best thing about the club. I can see Ruby Skye being a great club if it were crowded, but unfortunately I had gone too late. Me and the gals were coming home (to our hotel) after a night at the Voda bar when we decided to stop by (our hotel was on geary, right around the corner). I think we arrived at around 2 or 3 am. The club was pretty empty, and there wasn't a cute guy in sight, so I recommend going during peak hours. But regardless I'm glad I got to experience Ruby Skye; Not the best experience I could've had, but it wasn't a complete let down. I recommend Ruby Skye if you like an older crowd, if you're in the Union Square area, and/or if you like dance music, and lots of it!

I will never go back!!!
by gretchenapplegate
I went to this place thinking that I was going to have so much fun and the music would be so good and I was terribly disappointed. Let me start with the music, it was worse than anything I have ever heard at any nightclub-Ever! (And I am from Oregon where the clubs are small and they mix in Guns N Roses)! It was the same 1234 beat over and over and I thought I might fall asleep on the dance floor. Then I looked around me and realized that My friends and I were the youngest people there! (I am 24)!
Now onto the rudest, most insulting bartender I have ever ordered a drink from. When I went to pay I grabbed the money from my bra and he wouldn't take it. I thought he was just being nice at first but i quickly realized that he was angry. So I asked why and he said, and I quote "I don't want your money from your bra because that is dirty. How would you like it if you were a bartender and i came up and reached into my crotch to pay you" I explained that I did not have a purse (they do not check purses there). Where would he rather me keep my money, in my back pocket where my butt is sweating? Does he realize that money is one of the dirtiest things on this planet? Does he know where every bill that is handed to him is coming from-doubt it! Not to mention a lot of the bills he is handed have just been used in their bathroom to snort coke! And about the whole pulling it out of his crotch thing-A breast is certainly cleaner than a musty genitalia where he would urinate from!!!!!! I don't urinate out of my breast, hell I am not even breast feeding! I could have respected the guys weird OCD if it weren't for the pompous rude way he went on and on about how unsanitary it was.
I will never go back to this ridiculous club. I am sure back in the day it was one of San Francisco's premier nightclubs but now they are just riding on their reputation from the days of old because this place is San Francisco's premier rip off!
Pros: Looks like a club out of a movie-Shame it is such an awful place!
Cons: Horrible music! Rude OCD bartender!

Had a fun time
by daisy768
I wasn't prepared for a whole entire night of house music but nothing a few drinks couldn't fix. If you're going to this club you MUST LOVE HOUSE/TECHNO MUSIC. Otherwise you will not have fun. That is the only music they play. The drinks were strong and easy to get. They have a coat check which worked out perfect because it was freezing. They have a huge dance floor. I think its pretty cool that they put their DJs centerstage. The cover was $25...now for me that was pretty steep. The only time I've paid anything over $20 was in Vegas. I had fun anyway with my friends and drinks.
Pros: Strong Drinks
Cons: Cover $25, Only House Music

This place is great if you want high energy, fun people, and a place to party until late! DJ's vary constantly but its mostly house music, but some mix in the top 40 into the beat. This place is never dead and it is definately worth every penny!

by georgiatech98
My roommate suggested this club so we went last night. What a waste of money! The whole time it just played techno and house music which is fine for about 30 mins before you get really tired of it. But I must say there was a ton of young people there and the atmosphere was cool. If you like a variety of other music, then I wouldn't recommend this place on Saturday night.

My friends and I always make Rubyskye a stop when in the city clubbin. They have hot dancers and the crowd is one of the best looking in the city. I can always expect to see the top DJs and they are open till 4:30am. Saw Danny Tanaglia here it was a defining moment in the SF club scene.

Not all it's hyped up to be
by ndnguy
Been to this place a few times, each time it was 80% guys and no one really looked like they were having fun. The crowd is really hit or miss, and if you go make sure you check to see which DJs are there because your experience will really vary based on who's playing that night. The best part of the club isn't the dancing, but rather going to the back room and smoking with your friends. But the $20 cover is still pretty steep for the city.
Pros: music
Cons: overpriced

I was here when Mykonys was spinning and the party was just AWESOME! The doorman even gave me free drink vouchers when he found out I was in the Army. I recommend coming here when a big name is spinning cause when I went the previous night it just wasn't quite as jumping. Strong drinks (albeit expensive) and a lack of sitting space ensure that you're kept dancing. I also love how the club is a madeover theater!
Pros: Soundsystem, Dancefloor
Cons: Expensive

Pure Bridge and Tunnel
by proselytizer
This place has all the makings of a great club. Reminiscent of east and west coast clubs in the 80's that lived in converted theaters this place could be magnificent. But it's not. The crowd is pure B&T and the management caters to them accordingly. Sure, they bring in the big names but try dancing to Nick Warren and Way Out West on the piddling sized dance floor while tripping over the purse collection discarded by groups of spurious out-of-towners. What a complete waste of a great space. This is not a serious dance club.

the house scene is dead
by keith_springer_lh
ruby skye is a cool venue as a space, but all they play is house music - they've done like one hip hop night on the weekends, otherwise, it's all house. the scene is dying, and from the looks of things, so is the ruby skye crowd. they feed off of the tourism in the union square area... mos def was there last year, that was off the hook; but alas, that was on a tuesday/wednesday. they need to bring a consistent hiphop weekend night then it would be a cool spot
Pros: nice decor, real upscale, good looking crowd
Cons: , expensive drinks, expensive cover

Had a Fantastic Time!
by rumrunner01
I loved this place. I went with a co-worker while we were in town for a convention and we had a blast. It was all techno music all night long and the dance floor was packed with all sorts of people. Sure it was crowded and loud but everyone was having a great time. There is a special smoking lounge upstairs with a pool table and a dj all its own. Then you can be on the balcony upstairs overlooking the dance floor as well. The entire place was laid out well, I thought, and plenty of room to dance. Not much room to sit (like you'd want to with that great music) unless you reserve a private area. Drinks were pretty good, a tad pricey but not that bad. Very interesting people to dance with and talk to. I'd definitely go again! Had a blast!
Pros: Great music, Huge dance floor, Fun attitudes
Cons: , Sticky floor

yummy bar
by redpandaxo
Always love partying here. The quality of the drinks are good compared to a LOT of other places I have been to. Nothing is worst than going clubbing and being served by a bartender who makes crappy drinks. This place has a GREAT bar with bartenders who know how to mix/make drinks.
Pros: bar, CLEAN
Cons: parking

Still Chugging Along
by elvissinatra
I've been to Ruby Skye at least 10 times now. I spent New Year's 2001 there and had a great time that night (but that's a story for another night). In its heyday this place was awesome. Its still a cool spot but its just not fresh anymore. The excitement in the air that you used to feel as you walked in has evaporated. Maybe this review is a little unfair because it is based on intangibles . . . Service is still very solid for a club of this size though.
Pros: big, music
Cons: lacks energy

Better to go with friends
by kurant
The place has so much potential.... great sound, and the space (inside an old theater) is very cool. One night it was a breeze to get in, not too crowded, and everyone seemed to be having a great time. Another time I rolled by, saw the line stretch all the way down the block with NOT ONE good looking person waiting to get in. So it's very hit or miss, and that's why I recommend bringing your own party here. Bottom line is that Frisco offers nothing better for an upscale, young dance crowd.
Pros: Good vibe, big room, good service
Cons: no music variety, hit or miss crowd

sucks

If you like mosh pits and drunk people running into you all night this is the place for you. We stayed 3 hours and it felt like 8. Sounded like they were playing the same few songs all night.
Pros: doorman
Cons: too crowded, bad music
