Ruby Skye is San Francisco's premiere nightclub and special event venue, conveniently located just off Union Square in the famed theater district. Ruby Skye is available for all your entertaining needs, whether it be corporate or private events.

Editorial by Citysearch

The Scene
Ruby Skye owner George Karpaty has opened a see-and-be-seen club for those who are, in his words, "grown-up, make money and dress nice." Like the clientele, every aspect of the club is detailed and maxed-out plush. Stained-glass portraits circa-1814 highlight the club's decor while maintaining an old-school flavor. (The place once housed the historic Stagecoach Theatre.) The lighting system casts an oceanic effect on the dance floor--very Cirque du Soleil.

The Draw
The real allure for much of the clientele is away from the dance action. Upstairs, a private smoking lounge houses pool tables, leather couches and cigar bar. It's the perfect place for patrons to get away from the noise and engage in getting-to-know-you conversation while puffing on a stogie.

Key Points

  • Beautiful Decor
  • Great for Private Events
  • The Top Acts in Bay Area

The Inside Scoop

  1. Look Good - Although the attire is casual, don't wear baseball caps, tennis shoes, or any kind of sportswear.
  2. Know Before You Go - On special midweek events and most weekend nights, be on the lookout for cigarette gals on foot. Expect to pay approximately $7 for a pack of smokes, $2-$3 for candy.
  3. Save Time - There's an ATM located upstairs, next to the pay phones near the stairs.
  4. The Extras - Friday and Saturday nights, pay $340 for a booth reservation. Perks: $200 worth of drinks, $40 prepaid gratuity, and entry without waiting behind the velvet rope.

Ratings_icons Oh how I long for the days of old...

snoskier

when money was aplenty and where the money was, women were right behind. Ruby Skye has come along way in the 2+ years I have been going there, and unfortunately, its straight down hill. I dont know if it was the guy wearing a t-shirt and jeans last weekend or the absurdly high ration of guys to girls this weekend that made me pine away for the days of old. The music is as great as ever. The decor is very pleasing, the prices modest to pricey (but they always were). But that is about it. The atmosphere is dragging. Any girl dancing by herself was almost immediately set upon by no fewer than 2 guys. In conclusion, go for the music, but pass if your only goal is to hook up. Unless you like guys, that is, very aggressive guys.

Pros: music, decor, shows

Cons: aggressive guys

you'll love this place. Each time I've gone to Ruby Skye I've spent no less than an hour in line only to watch bimbo after bimbo walk up to the bouncer, give him her best "excuse me - i'm on the guest list," and walk right in.

Ratings_icons Nice, but LOUD

smassone

The doormen at Ruby Skye were probably the friendliest of any I've seen but the friendly atmosphere doesn't always carry inside. The decor inside is great and the club is clean and it's definitely a "safe" place to let loose. And of course, it wouldn't be a club without the infamous "dancing girls on the podium" who continue to get more skampy costumes but tend to get the dancing crowd gyrating. Above all, if you like LOUD, then this it. If you want to be able to carry on a conversation, then I'd look for another spot.

Pros: Cool decor, Safe atmosphere, Friendly bouncers

Cons: Loud music, Pricey drinks

Ratings_icons Weekends attract a B&T crowd

bobbymouse

Whilst they get some really good DJs in (some great ones from the UK), if they play at the weekends then forget it. Very bridge and tunnel crowd, you know -- shiny shoes, open shirts, chains, lame attitudes. For good DJs, it should be tickets only so these people don't show up. However, when they have good DJs Sunday thru Thursday the crowd is MUCH MORE laid back, sneakers etc good vibe. And, of course, well done for the smoking room - you can actually feel like a grown up by having a cocktail AND a cigarette. Imagine!! Staff were nice (except one bartender who thought $4 was reasonable for a bottle of 25c water). No tip on that one! Sorry.

Pros: smoking!, weekday vibe, DJs, space

Cons: crowd, weekend vibe

Ratings_icons hit or miss

kennyd

It's Hit or Miss at Ruby Skye. Depending on the dj and the crowd. Ruby Skye has really made an effort lately to bring in some cool djs from the UK that are hot but not yet the superstars of Sasha, etc. Much better than 1015. Depending on the dj, the crowd can either be really fun and "cool" or really cheesy and bridge & tunnel. Truly hit or miss. The club itself is beautiful and they have a SMOKING ROOM!!!!!!! A+ for providing that so you're not forced outside like a kid.

Pros: decor, smoking room, sometimes djs

Cons: sometimes the crowd

Ratings_icons Glamerous but Odd

Ruby Skye is a gorgeous club. Truly one of the most beautiful venues in the bay, however the crowd can be off at times. The club is located in the heart of Union Square, which is near many hotels. This can make for a very non-Sanfrancisco crowd, which is unfortunate. Parking is also a nightmare!!

Pros: Great Atmosphere

Cons: Horrible Parking

Ratings_icons are we talking about the same club?

cjangel

My girlfriends and I went last Sat to party for my birthday and I must say i was so impressed with Ruby Skye. The music ,decor, really cool eye candy was amazing. I dont understand some of the reviews of this club we found it to be one of the best clubs we have ever been to. They do take caution on who gets in so maybe some of the bitter reviewers didnt even make it in.

Pros: sound, music, space

Cons: a little to crowded, line for bathroom

Ratings_icons Not bad for a "mega-club"

XSuperstar

I realize that I'm a tourist here, but I've frequented clubs in cities all over the world. I like a lot of things about Ruby Skye. First of all, I like the swankiness of the place. Secondly, the music was not what I expected for a club near the tourist mecca of Union Square. They actually layed down some fat house beats. The only main drawback was the considerable number of "look-at-me!" wallflowers. I hate pretencious people, but luckily, Ruby Skye is not a particularly pretencious place. Reminds me a little too much of a Vegas club, however (too much glitz, not enough substance).

Pros: Plush seats, great music

Cons: clubby posers

Ratings_icons Ritzy Glitzy Club to be seen

crimsonka

I've tried to like Ruby Skye, but just can't. If black leather jackets with people wearing sunglasses at night are your thing, then this is the place. They consistently have great music, great space, convenient parking not too far, in the heart of downtown. They have everything going for them but the crowd. I felt transported to a trendy LA club. Go once and see for yourself.

Pros: Good sound, Smoking room

Cons: crowd

Ratings_icons Better than LA

pythons

I visited a couple of weekends ago and found this place to be live! I didn't have more than a 10 minute wait outside. Unlike other reviewers, the staff was no less courteous than other places, in fact I thought better. The doormen had to put up with every a--hole who thought they could mooch their way ahead of everybody else. Inside, the atmosphere was outrageous. I thought the crowd was a good mix. I definitely plan to go back.

Ratings_icons Once upon a time

waterlillies95

You know Ruby Skye used to be "the place to be seen" but now it's just gotten a little crazy. The music is still great but the scene is just not what it used to be. Bartendars are rude, the atmosphere just got super pretentious and it just is hard to ever see that placed packed anymore...Such a great veue otherwise...

Pros: music, smoking room, coat check

Cons: people, people, pricey

went here late on a sunday when already too tired to truly engage but still had a great time. loved the space - what a beautiful old building. security and staff were pleasant, polite and helpful. bathrooms were trashed, but it was late. mostly 30+ gay males having a great time grooving to interesting mix of music. definitely will check it out again on a friday or saturday.

Pros: cool space, great music
