Khana Peena Ii

this is by far my favorite indian restaurant in the bay area. it's got all the great traditional indian dishes, like tandoori chicken, and shrimp, as well as your typical other foods. everything is great here. I'd have to personally recommend the Mango Lassi's, which are great supplements to one's dinner. Note that it can get a bit loud in here, as you will need to raise your voice on occasion to talk to someone.

After much anticipation, and numerous recommendations, I just had to try the $6.98 lunch buffet. I was surprised that the food wasn't as good as their reputation. It seemed like they use lots of butter, and lemmon juice in a few of their sauces. I'm sorry, but it didn't taste right to me. Like most other Indian Buffets, the food wasn't as fresh as it should have been - the Naan was soggy, the Tandoori chicken was too dry. And mostly the food was bland. Perhaps I caught them on a bad day.

My expectations were higher for them, I guess.

PROS: Good Location, near UC gate
CONS: Overrated, Food was bland

I didn't think it was possible to eat at one place so many times-- but trust my husband and me: this place is addictive. (He didn't even LIKE Indian food before coming here, and now we go at *least* once a week... and that's unprecedented for people like us who like to try a bunch of different things.) The chicken tikka masala? Fantastic. The tandoori chicken? Delicious. The spinach with potatoes? Superb. And when you can get all of these things and more for under $10? It just can't get any better.
