I went to this with my lovely and beautiful girlfriend. I was not really into the whole tea thing, but I decided to give it a try. While we were sitting there, I was welcomed by a small insect critter (the type that begins with a "r")--this site won't allow me to type in the entire name, that was crawling on the table! I was so grossed out. Never would I go there again.

The silverware was pretty dirty as well. It was not a good experience.

Beware

The best way to describe this cafe is quaint. It feels like home, and they serve the tea in nice china. My sister & my mom have gone here in the early afternoon and had the chance to try lots of their special sandwiches.

I definitely want to go back!

Not only does Chado Tea Room offer wonderful loose leaf tea, they have tons of different kinds to choose from and give a little background information on each kind (Assam from Northern India, etc). The atmosphere fits all styles as well - from tea hats to jeans and flip flops. It gets really busy on the weekends, but if you have a reservation you will always get seated. Also, pay the extra $1.00 for the Chado Cream with your scone. It is more than worth it!

I took my mom, dad, and boyfriend here for Mother's Day and they had a blast. The service was prompt. Their portions were very generous (we even had enough food to take home) at a reasonable price of $15 per person. They even gave each mom a red rose. Its great for groups, catching up with your girlfriends, and very guy-friendly. Try their Chado Afternoon tea. Its a great mix of strong and subtle taste which makes a good pairing with their afternoon tea menu. Make sure to call ahead for reservations. Its a great modern take on an old repast.

Pros: Good food portions, reasonable price, very guy-friendly, 0ver 300 tea selections

Cons: Can be noisy

While I am impressed by Chado's massive collection of teas (over 200 varieties, all of which you may choose for your Afternoon Tea) - they are horribly watered down with barely any flavor left.

The food is decent, they have some interesting take on traditional tea sandwiches (curried egg salad, shredded chicken with cranberries, for example) and the scones & sweets are decent, but unremarkable.

So all in all, not bad - but there are better tea to be had in Pasadena area.

Chado offers lots of teas, with an in depth description of each one. So if you like green tea, black tea, even white tea, you will not be disappointed. Since it is heating up during summer, they were even able to recommend a fruity black tea which they turned into a tasty ice tea with a few slices of strawberries. It is nice and mellow but sometimes can get quite busy, so you might want to call ahead to see what the atmosphere is like that day. If there is a baby shower group going on, you might be expecting slower than usual service. The interior is a simple wood and white scheme, with the most colorful items being their tea pots for sale.

This was my first visit to this tea room and unlike the other tea rooms that I frequent, this room was lacking the charm and ambience of a more English style place. Chado is very reasonably priced, and must be praised for their incredible tea selection. Unfortunately, serving the tea in a coffee mug type cup takes away from the beauty of a true tea experience. Despite the lack in charm, Chado offers very tasty sandwiches and the strawberries with cream were fantastic. Unfortunately, I cannot say the same for the desserts. Both the carrot cake and upside down cake were dry and bland.

Scones were disappointing...crunchy on the outside and they seemed to be toasted, which is NOT how scones are supposed to be served. Also the atmosphere was not like one would expect in an English tea room...the cups and saucers were coffee shop coffee cups. The imperial earl grey tea was relatively good, as was the cranberry and salmon tea sandwiches...but these did not make up for the lack of atmosphere or decent scones. If you want an authentic experience, go elsewhere...it is worth the five or so extra bucks you would pay. If you really don't care about scones or the atmosphere, and just want to have tea without worrying about the price, come here.

I've been a fan of afternoon tea for years. Hoping to find a good LA teahouse. Sandwiches were uninspired and the bread had been toasted long before it was served. Sliced strawberries were days old! The tea didn't show up until 15 minutes after the food. The clotted cream was too sweet; no butter for the scone. A combo of iffy service and poor quality food. Scone was good textured, soft, yummy. The tea was also good, but arrived too late for the meal. A disappointment.

This is a sweet little restuarnt in Old Town Pasadena where you can see the ladies who lunch all wearing bonnets-- seriously. They serve lovely lunches of soups and salads and sandwiches, or you can go in for the traditional "high tea"-- towering silver trays adorned with-- yes, cucumber and watercress sandwiches and the like. My favorite combination to get is the cream of tomato soup (served with lovely crisps of dark rye bread) and chicken salad. I always finiah with a scone-- baked in house and served warm with fresh fruit and creme fraiche.

What is best about this place, tho, to a tea-phile such as myself, is the wall of tea that towers behind the counter. The tea selection is enormous. There is lieterally a book of teas available. My favorite is the birthday tea but they also have light fruity tisanes and white and green teas. T

he teas can be bought to go, as well-- and there is also a wide variety of tea accoutrements-- tea pots, tea cups, tea cozies and the like that add to the decor as well as to the ambiance. Enjoy!

PROS: tea tea tea!!!
CONS: sometimes slow service if they're busy

If you want tea service that is reasonably priced, go here. The teas come with great sandwiches - my favorite was the chicken and cranberries. This is also a great place to have a bridal shower as tea isn't too expensive - $15/person.

While the tea and sandwiches are quite good, the staff here is icy cold and in fact, down right mean. You would think that a tea room would have at least some knowledge about proper etiquette, but not here. At Chado, the customer is always wrong!

OK, so there are parts of this that feel a bit pretentious, and it certainly is not cheap, but I LOVED my visit to the Chado Tea Room.

The variety of teas they serve up is incredible-- probably a bit too much for the novice, since I didn't even know where to begin, but the waiter was very friendly and helpful. Plus, they have a great guide that lists all the teas in full detail.

I ordered the lunch service, which comes on this great tower of a serving tray (3 stacks high). I have to admit not being that excited about the sandwich prospects at first (seemed like standard cucumber finger food fare), but they were very accomodating about substitutions, and the sandwiches I got, including a delicious salmon one, were fantastic.

Working my way down the tray, I got to the scones and jam-- not the traditional dry, pasty British scones, but actually very fluffy and yummy-- almost like biscuits-- tradition be damned-- I'll take these over the usual ones any day!

Then, I worked down to the deserts, in

Was convinced to come here by my girlfriend. It's a good place for tea and social conversations. I must say that the milk tea was quite impressive and the sandwiches were great too. I'm a food guy and there wasn't much for me to fill my appetite. Not what I was looking for when it comes to spending more than what I can imagine, especially for tea. Think I'll just stick with the usual and leave this to her and her girlfriends...besides, this is a ladies' hangout anyways. So gentlemen, beware and be prepared!
