Ratings_icons Great Place to Get Your Haircut

John C.

I happened on this place years ago, and now drive quite a fair distance to get my hair cut by Lilly. She always does a very good job, and I enjoy talking to her. The place is fairly stylish, and I think many of the stylists are good at what they do, especially for the price.

Ratings_icons 30 years of Tomo cuts!!!

Anonymous

Yep, I'd been going to I Magnin's hair salon, but when I got married in 1978 and moved to the East Bay I tried Tomo. My sister's gone there for that long; my dad even tried it. His business partner and wife (well-known Alamedans both go there). I never go without seeing one friend or another -- male and female, all ages. SUCH kind and friendly people, wholesome conversation (and entertaining, if you get Tom (Tomo) or Kimie. OH, I forgot to say that I like their cuts and perms and willingness to try whatever I suggest. Over the years I've taken houseguests from all over the country (college kids, and seniors), even a woman from Ireland, who liked my cut! I wouldn't go anywhere else.

Ratings_icons Not half as bad as some of these reviewers are rating it!!!

I see on here that a lot of people say it's horrible...that has never been the case for me, maybe I'm easily pleased but I don't go off ranting when I end up with a bad cut, hair is hair it'll grow back eventually. I've been going to TOMO for 8 or 9 years now and have had different stylists cut my hair but honestly I've never once complained about my cut. Yes, it is a pretty busy place so don't you think that if this place was that horrible like some of these reviewers are saying that their clientele would be that huge.

Ratings_icons Hair cut at the speed of sound

I have used this place several times with different stylists. And, its always the same. Bad cuts!. There is no style. The hair cuts are consistently terrible. At times I had to go to a different stylist just to fix their mistakes. None of the stylists at Tomo know how to cut straight. A sloppy job. You will end up with some hair longer than other. For the price you pay at Tomo's I'd much rather go to a barber shop for half the price.

I have been going to Tomo's for years and have come to praise Tony for my hair. He is the ONLY one i will have cut my hair at that salon. The only problem there has ever been with Tony is a friend of mine who got her side bangs cut the opposite way she wanted. Tony helped me find the cut i wanted i brought in some prospect pictures and asked what cut he thought would go good with my face and he answered honestly and together we chose a cut that came out beautifully. Be honest with the salon workers. My dad swears by lilly but his is a basic cut that honestly it would take a 5 year old to mess up. Tony does some pretty up do's as well that did my friends senior banquet. I agree with the hair color statement i didn't like it so i don't color my hair there but i can honestly say that Tony does a good job. And who can beat a 20 dollar hair cut that gets heads turning... enough said

Ratings_icons Price wise cheap but no customer relations

I have been to Tomos for a long time. There are a lot of people but I never went to anyone except Tony. He is the best there. He always helped me. The receptionists keep changing and they are too young, dumb and rude on top. Recently, we had to go to a party and I took 2 appointments for me and my daughter. Then my husband and my son also wanted to trim their hair. So I called and I don't know who picked up the phone, when I asked her to check with Tony if he will also fix their hair as well. She said yes, she took the names and erased my and my daughter's names and put my husband and my son's names instead. So I took time off from my office early to go to my appointment and when I arrived hoping I will get a hair cut, they informed me that I only have two appointments and Tony will not be able to do my or my husband's hair. Next thing I know I was running late for the party, and no one will fix my hair. So, it seemed as if I was being harrassed and pleading for someone to fix my hair so I look decent for the party and finally one young girl helped me curl my hair. It seemed to me that their time was important and not for the customer. Many a times I would be on time and I would wait because Tony had someone he was helping. I tried to explain this to the Tomo the owner, it seemed he did not even listen my side of the story, not that I didn't want to pay, he told me he will not charge me this time but don't come back. I was shocked beyond belief as I have been going to Tony for several years now.

Ratings_icons WATCH OUT!!!!

Anonymous

Tomo's is a okay spot to get your hair cut. Its cheap and if you get Tony or Lily it might even come out cute. BUT never get your hair colored there. Not only was I charged 90 dollars for a real bad hair dye job, they also stripped and damaged my hair. When I called and ask for them to do something about it, they told me they'll return part of my money and to never come back. Why would I they did not know what they were doing!!!! So watch OUT!!!!

Ratings_icons i would give it 0..but i cant

its a very busy salon, but i really dont know why?! maybe because the prices are very cheap...probably. anyways, its a ok salon i guess for a haircut beacuase its cheap, but for color..not so much. they use miss clairol which you can buy from alot of drug stores and its really not up to date to whats been going on in this industry in the past 20 YEARS. gosh..i went to beauty school and my teacher taught me to be AWARE of salons like these...he used miss clairol in his beauty school a LONG time ago..back when all they got were perms and wet sets..they also use the cheapest bleach you can find...bw40 which can actually eat throught wood if you left it there long enough...the receptionist is also extremely rude and annoying .. she's 17..young and dumb and likes to call people sweety and hun... doesnt make much sense. other then that, i guess its alright? my advice to people is and i can say its true because i've learned.."you get what you pay for" so if you want alittle bit better you should look around alameda and maybe you might find alot better for alittle more....

Ratings_icons Horrible!!!! Worst haircut ever!

Anonymous

I got a haircut from Tomo, the owner and whom the salon is named after, and he completely butchered my hair! I asked for a trim, in which he chopped off up to 5 inches of my hair. On top of that, he smokes and continued to cough in my face. He seemed to not care that he didn't give me the trim that I asked for. He also smelled like cigarettes the whole time, which wasn't a very pleasant smell while getting a haircut.

Ratings_icons Make an appointment with Tony

Emily R. | insider_expert Insider Expert | Rank: 11,294

Tomo & Company For Hair is my favorite hair salon. I was referred to them by a co-worker who had been going to this salon for a few years now. Tony is a wonderful hairstylist. All the haircuts Ive gotten from him are hip and cute. Be sure to make an appointment though because he is very popular and has a lot of regulars.
