Living on the south side of the UC Berkeley campus, there's a few selections for groceries, but most of them have their quirks. Berkeley Bowl is packed with people with endless lines at convenient hours, Whole Foods is pricey, and Safeway produce sucks. Luckily for those who go to safeway for decent everything else and okay prices, Yasai Market is RIGHT ACROSS THE STREET. They have really FRESH produce. Not a huge selection as it is a rather small store, but what they do sell is high quality with pretty reasonable prices. They also have small shiitake and locally made tofu thats pretty cheap. Can foods, snacks, flours, milk, eggs, and asian condiments can be found here as well, but I go for the veggies and sometimes fruits. Get meats at safeway or at the butcher a couple doors down if you're willing to pay the $.

Yasai has a little bit of everything. Their produce is surprisingly good all year round. They also have fairly good non-fresh items like spices, cereal, drinks, and snacks.

Their cheese and ice cream selection is surprisingly good for such a tiny market. The prices aren't really that different from any other super market.

This is *the* place I go to when I need just a couple of random vegetables.

It's a great Safeway alternative.

This is a hidden secret tucked away in Rockridge. The produce here is always good, and they often have great weekly deals on really tasty fruits and veggies. The staff is friendly, too. Watch for the Saturday mushroom specials. Some of the other products (breads, etc.) can be overpriced, but this is Rockridge, after all, and produce is obviously their specialty. On the AC Transit #51 line, and about a ten minute walk from Rockridge BART.

Among my friends I am known for my coleslaw, and for occasionally repeating myself. One repeated theme is the demise of cabbage and how, when I was a boy in Florida, the cabbage that we picked was so flavorful that it would burn my mouth. I suspect they have always thought I exaggerate.

Despite the fine reputation of our local Berkeley/Oakland produce markets I have not been able to recapture that slightly painful flag of freshness. More secretly I have dreaded a fading of taste sensation with age, though publicly I have pointed an accusing finger at produce market logistics.

Today I bought a head of cabbage from modest little Yasai Market. I am relieved to report that my sense of taste has indeed retained its integrity and thrilled at the discovery of this source of fresh cabbage. It is so flavorful it will burn your mouth.

Pros: very fresh produce, reasonable prices, friendly staff
