Liberty High School in Brentwood, CA 94513 has some fantastic teachers. In our family & close friends' experience (opinions about the school by 20 former students since 2004 were gathered here): it was a mix of approximately 5 percent or 1 person viewing the school as excellent; 15 percent good to very good; 30 percent average; 50 percent poor to mediocre. A student has about a 50-50 chance of being instructed by a decent teacher. Liberty suffers from a "good old boys" mentality that unfortunately rewards long time family residents and close friends at the expense of newer residents. It is a very "clique" oriented school and much of staff are often not motivated to "do their best". The administration is usually more interested in pleasing itself and the teachers (very strongly unionized) . . . much more so than considering the best interests of the students. The best interest of the students seems to be most evident when convenience or parental outrage comes into play. The majority of those in power are primarily motivated by job security than truly doing the right thing! Not much backbone among the principal and vice principals or counselors. Overall, our group rated the administration 1.1 star; counselors 1.8; and the teaching staff 2.2 stars (4 point scale). It is well documented by local newspapers that many of the buildings have health issues due to mold, mildew and asbestos . . . combine this with a less than pro-active principal whose hot button is to avoid burning bridges among teachers . . . and you have a slightly below average place of education. A high level of parental involvement compensates for some of the other shortcomings. In a nutshell, too much favoritism at the expense of the less popular students creates some major disappoinment!

Liberty High School was a great High School that my daughter attended. She transferred there her sophomore year, and became close with a couple of the teachers, and one administrator in particular. These people had a very positive impact on her, and she took away a lot of lessons from them - lessons about every day life, but also about things that she benefitted from knowing very much her first year in college.
Of course, there are always some people who are a little less pleasant to work with. Unfortunately, the employees who have to work with the parents and students most are usually the most easily irritated here. It was sometimes frustrating to have to visit the attendance office, records, etc., because if you caught them on a bad day, some of the people could be just rude.
Despite the little faults, I would definitely recommend Liberty to any family who may be thinking of more expensive alternatives to a public high school. This one can make you very happy.
