My 82 yr. old sister has now been a patient here for a month + and will be here long term.
I don't think any convalescent hospital I've seen so far is desireable because, let's face it, so many people who are sick and/or completely dependent located in one place creates a depressing atmosphere to be sure. Having said that, all of the staff here that I've met so far, are caring, eager to do the right thing and have followed through. I get the impression that the staff really does care and really does want to do a good job. I do think though, that you have to be attentive, making sure the medication is updated by the doctor and not wait for the doctor visit which is once a month.
I also think you have to be diligent in being a voice for your loved one and make sure the nurses know what she/he likes, wants or needs. My sister doesn't speak up and prefers to just go without and suffer...she doesn't want to 'bother' anyone which I think is a symptom of many old people. The therapy department was very good..I was impressed that when she didn't go to therapy one morning, one of the therapist came to her room to talk to her and impress upon her how important it was to keep moving. He had a wonderful caring attitude.

The hospital promised a lot when I was looking for a place for a long time friend that had no family. Unfortunately, it wasn't a great place. She was unable to hold a glass and relied on them to give her something to drink. She became dehydrated (not good for the elderly). They said that she was either sleeping or refused when they offered her fluids. She drank tons of tea when she was at home and that was all she drank except for an occasional coke. Of course, they offered her juice which she refused. I explained and told them to leave a glass of tea in her room. However, it wasn't until I created a huge scene that they finally did as asked. This is only one example of the lack of care and ignorance of the staff. There are many more.

Unfortunately, I haven't seen any of the hospitals that are any good in Modesto. So if you are up for a challenge and have the time to check on your loved one, this may be your only option. However English Oaks is prettier (yes I've reviewed them too). I recommend hiring a "baby sitter" to stay with your loved one, keep a journal in the patient's room and be very vocal and ask lots of questions. If it doesn't seem right or logical, it most likely is not. You have to be the advocate for your loved one!
