I've been a member for several years at Total Woman Health & Fitness. I love it ! I prefer not to work out with men. I would rather not hear the loud boisterous grunting sounds and stinky sweat all of the equipment. I use to belong to one of those gyms. The atmosphere and hygiene of those gyms leave a lot to be desired. When ever men are in the mix the whole dynamics of the gym changes. In other words "PICK UP JOINT !" Also attracts certain kind of women who need the attention of men at a gym. I like having a place just for women. The staff is friendly and helpful, the classes are the best I've experienced and the Truxtun location is perfect for me. The owner is very nice and seemed to be genuinely concerned about you.
It's ok. I like the staff, friendly and nice, except this one girl named Sarah, she doesn't work there anymore (whew). The truxton location is bigger of course, BUT every other treadmill isnt working. The ellipticals make these weird noises when they're in use. You can tell that its time to upgrade. The other equipment just looks like it was bought from a garage sale. Its so old and nothing new. I wish who ever is in charge would upgrade to the latest equipment and machines because there are better things out there compared to other gyms ive been in. I decided to check out the Hageman location and the treadmills are in better condition, it's a smaller gym and has newer equipment, BUT very cheap quality equipment. I'm stuck with them because I have a contracts but once its over, I'm out of there. Its clean though, that;s about it.
I have been a member at Total Woman for over a year now and I love it. Leigh, the owner, is one of the most motivational people I have ever met and because of her I keep coming back and trying harder! She always encourages us all and makes us all feel welcome, regardless of your fitness level. Volkslaugh training made me into a stronger and more confident person and I was very fortunate to make a lot of new friends that I continue training with. Leigh always finds a new way to keep us busy and moving. the staff at the gym are extremely helpful and always pleasant. It's a great place to go work out if you don't want to have to deal with the meat market vibe of the other gyms. Nicole C.
TW offers a variety of classes at all three of their locations. I have been a member at this gym for 3 plus years and I absolute love it. The staff are very helpful and are more than willing to work with you on your fitness goals. I have been a guest at other local gyms and they have great equipment, but it seems like they are pick up joints. Rock on Total Woman!!

I cannot say enough great things about this gym. Hands down the best gym for women. Leigh is energetic and motivating and it is infectious. Volkslauf training is what brought me into TW and the friends I have made keeps me coming back. I look forward to going to the gym because I know not only am I going to get a great workout, but I am going to get to see my friends and smile and laugh and feel encouraged to keep training.
Total Woman has been my gym for over 3 years and is by far the best gym in Bakersfield for women. The atmosphere is relaxed and encouraging, not at all intimidating like bigger chain gyms can be. The staff is friendly and helpful and Leigh, the owner, is always working to offer more training options for the members. There are great classes and extra training available, like the Volkslauf training offered every summer. I look forward to going to the gym because I enjoy the atmosphere every time I am there, you cannot say that about every gym, and sometimes the hardest part about working out is finding the motivation to go, so having an inviting place to go is an invaluable tool. I wouldn't go anywhere else.
I signed up for a one year contract at Total Woman and after the contract expired and even after I canceled in writing, then canceled by the phone, then even canceled via fax, after all of that I was forced to go in there to cancel. I also kept disputing the charge to my credit card company because they refused to stop charging me. It was evident there was no more contract since after one year they started charging me a higher rate. Even after all of this, after I went into the club to take care of it and was forced to cancel my credit card, they were still trying to charge me by calling me up asking me for a different form of payment. I HATE THEM. I dealt with a Shelly and a Kelly. They are horrible in my opinion. They assured me it was taken care of but heck no, they are STILL trying to charge me.
My credit rating is important to me and they are basically trying to ruin my credit by these charges popping on there when I canceled and cannot afford to be paying for two gyms.
Here it is 4 months, and I am still fighting to get them to stop trying to charge me and to give me back my money. I may be forced to take them to small claims court.
If you want to cancel, I recommend having your attorney send them a letter stating you are canceling. That is my next step.
This was their response below but this is the exact person who caused the problem and who we spoke with. Their talk is cheap:

Total Woman is a place that I felt very comfortable at. I'm a bigger woman so I stay away from places like 24 hour fitness where I feel totally uncomfortable. It's not like that at Total woman. Big,small, you're made to feel welcome. The staff is nice and helpful and the indoor pool is wonderful!
PROS: Friendly, Indoor Pool
