Best meat in K town

Last night I came here with several friends to celebrate my boyfriend's birthday and I cannot see how anyone could find reason to complain. The food here is so delicious, and it is completely perfect for a group of friends as an interactive way to hang out. It is relatively impossible to ruin the food; although we got distracted by side conversations and would leave the meat cooking on the grill for far too long, the flavor was still so incredible that the fact that none of us knew beans about cooking couldn't ruin it. We ordered a little bit of everything and you cannot go wrong with anything on the menu: though as a warning, squid is the one thing you do not want to leave cooking for too long (as after a few minutes it will turn rubbery).

This place is great. Anyone I've ever known that knows anything about food in LA mentions this in their top ten.

Pros: Best Korean BBQ in Los Angeles, hands down.

Cons: None, unless you're a douche or a princess.

Thought it was a good, no frills kind of place. Food was good, the service was fast. No complaints.

BE WARNED!........when you see many reviews......it IS because the negative is true......I just came back from one of the worst places I have ever had KB..(this place!!).and we go often. The service is terrible......they just put the food down and you have to call them back to ask anything......we could never get a refill for our water. (we ordered Korean wine) wanted more......couldn't get the waitress (who had an attitude) to come to the table. The barbeque pit was spitting sparks........it burned my arm. The food (compared to other places) was sparse. The floors and chairs were dirty...(It was filthy)..I had to take a napkin and clean my chair. This place made my skin crawl.......We expected crawly things to appear any minute....... They have a B rating........I wouldn't use the restroom there. Needless to say, we will not be visiting this establishment again!!....Stay Clear!!

We absolutely loved the food here. Our only problem was with the parking in the area.

My clothes smelled like charcoal the next day, but I really didn't mind. It just reminded me of the excellent meal from the previous night.

The reasonable prices and tasty eats here will have me coming back soon.

The best K-bbq in Koreatown. Even better, they use charcoal, not gas or electric. So you'll sure smell extra smoky by the end of the night. It's small and you'll expect the usual service from Korean bbq restaurants. I love everything about this place except for the parking and they don't have as much sides as other places, but the whole dining experience makes up for it.

This place serves great Korean BBQ. I really enjoy their food every time I go. Service is good and I like the environment.
HOWEVER, if you did not leave enough tip, waitresses will follow you down to outside and demand us to tip more. That is one thing I do not like about this place.

did you say "none of real korean people don't go here?" grammar aside, who, then, are all the korean people i see eating there every time i go? are they actors? robots? seriously, friend, give me a break. this place is the real deal and no amount of nay-saying or backlash can change that. the meat is excellent, the vibe is dead-on (and, therefore, not swanky by any means) and the beer is cold. want swank? go to chosun galbi or tahoe galbi or even yissi hwaro (which is also durned good). but if you want terrific, charcoal-grilled meat--and the best eel and mino i've had in the city--this is your spot.

This is the best Korean BBQ I've had. Stick to the #1,2, or 3. They're the most popular for a reason. The place has no atmosphere. It's like a Waffle House with a smoker in the middle of it. But what you don't pay for in decor you get back in quantity and quality of the food.

They have parking but it always seems to be full, and it's a bit of a hike from the Westside but totally worth it. Went to a Koren BBQ place here in on the Westside and I got half the portion for twice the price. Great decor, and better service but you since you can't eat either I'd stick with this K-town suprise.

I read all the reviews. I loved it. More atmospheric than many KBBQ joints and with CHARCOAL for goodness sakes. Fabulous! I didn't think the prices were any better or worse than anywhere else and our server was extremely attentive. I love smoke and campfires and such so was unbothered by this. Folks who are travelers and adventurous eaters, willing to soak up the experience - go. Folks who worry about their hair or need a crispy clean experience - go elsewhere. Great time Soot B, I'll be back.

Being a first timer to Korean BBQ; I wasn't sure that I'd like this place..but boy was I wrong. What this place lacks in decor it makes up for with the food.

We ordered short ribs (boneless), shrimp and marinated steak - all the meat was fresh, tasted great and had very little fat. The awesome bbq was served with kim chee, lettuce, soup, and assorted veggies - accompanied with yummy soy bean paste.

I liked the fact that the waitress pretty much left us alone to do our own cooking @ the table, as I've heard of some places where the waitress takes over - standing at your table the whole time. This place scores huge with me for a great lunch spot with co-workers, and would be equally good for a family dinner (minus small children) - I'm seriously impressed by the food - but want to redecorate the dining area.

Loved it - will be back soon!

I'm built for meat...I love meat...and I love Korean food. My husband Eric and I have been to a plethora of places and aside from reeking days afterwards, it is the best green onion salad and marinated beef anywhere. All my pregnant cravings have been satisfied!

I can cook. I don't go out to eat necessarily to be wowed by the unattainable at home. I go out to eat for the convenience, for the variety of flavors that I may not have in my cupboards at the moment and most importantly for the service. I have also worked in the restaurant business for over 7 years, so I understand service as well. So to be able to relax after hard day's work and have someone else do the cooking, cleaning and serving is pretty nice.

Last night I (caucasian) dined at Soot Boll Jeep with my girlfriend (african american) and her brother, sister and mother. We had some of the worst service I have ever experienced.

(this is to all restaurants, but especially to Soot Boll Jeep)

1. Don't be race-ist. Soot Boll Jeep's servers were completely rude and were too busy stocking their beer fridge for the end of the night duties to check if we wanted to order (15 minutes). I had to confront the server at the fridge to bring her to the table.

2. If you say you're open to 11, then let me walk in the door anytime up until 11 and SERVE ME! Don't make me feel uncomfortable because you want to be in bed by 11. If that's the case, say you're open until 9.
Don't drop off my meat and start cooking it before bringing our drinks and our banchan. And don't drop my check off while I'm eating, unless you are friendly about it.

3. Expect a bad tip (a really bad one) if your service stinks with no apologies. If that's your style of service, that's my style of tipping. Hey, I could left nothing for a tip (Tipping is not the custom in South Korea and it is almost never expected - WIKIPEDIA) and probably should have.

4. If you say you take credit cards, don't ask me for cash instead. It's tacky. Plus it makes it obvious that you want to hide your revenues from the government.

Walking into SBJ, one is literally smoked out due to the poor ventilation. This is a very sparse, warehouse-like space where you will definitely walk out smelling like bbq'd meat and charcoal. That said, if you're not going for atmosphere and you're up for doing some laundry afterwards, I recommend SBJ. The meat, although it looks sketchy at times, is delicious. Especally the spicy pork, which is not for the faint of stomach. The variety of traditional side dishes that are included with the meal are fantastic, and a nice cold beer or soju is the perfect accompaniment. And the price is nice. Oh yes, and it takes a firm tone to get the servers to not constantly try to cook your meat for you, but eventually they get the hint.

After hearing rave reviews from Korean locals, we decided to try a new Korean bbq place after always going to the same ones all the time. When you first walk in, it is not a great place for ambience, as they had plastic chairs and the floor was dirty from all the charcoal. We ordered 2 orders of galbi which was very small for its price $19.99 per order. And while we were eating, flecks of charcoal burnt my arms. The fire rose too high and was burning our skin, we had to dim it with cubes of ice. Too much work and hassle to eat korean bbq. And the meat was not as fresh and tender as some other restaurants in Ktown. Pretty expensive for what we got, probably would not come back again. Its not that the food was bad, just average...

We just moved to LA and have been spoiled by the quality of Korean BBQ in New York. I asked my neighbors for advice and one of them (happens to be Korean) said go to Soot Bu!l Jeep. I figure what the hell, if the native swears up and down by it, it's gotta be good. Unfortunately. SBJ didn't live up to the hype; the food was medicore, small portions and the price was certainly not on the inexpensive side. The Zagat said the cost is about $17 per person and mine came out to be $35 per person. Well, I would be glad to pay more for better quality, better ambiance and better service.

I think this place started off as being a great "dive" Korean BBQ place, but all the hype got to their heads. It's a disappointment and I don't understand what's so marvelous about this place. I have had a lot better Korean BBQ in both NY and Chicago.

I'm a Korean BBQ fiend, and I love coming here with my family. I specify family, because it's a bit pricey to go with friends, but then again when it comes to high quality meat, I think it's worth the money. Whenever I come here, I always get the galbi and ju-mool-luk. The wait and the parking can get a bit crazy during dinnertime, but that can be tolerable when you're smelling the sweet aroma of barbecued meat from outside.

Cons: parking, wait

People who criticize this place nitpick about the parking, the wait, and the sometimes pushy waitresses. If you like Korean BBQ, once you've been to this place, you could care less. The charcoal makes it and you'll never go anywhere again that cooks over gas. The short ribs, shrimp, spencer steak and spicy pork are to die for. You'll leave the place wreaking of smoke and garlic but it's a small price to pay for the best Korean BBQ you'll ever eat. I'll be back again and again and again.

The food in this place is phenomenal. The side dishes and serving sequence are kind of baffling. The servers spoke no English and service is very minimal...but who cares, you're here for the food. Order a couple big Sapporos, get some pork and beef ribs or shrimp and enjoy the ride. The Korean BBQ here is the best it can possibly be. Trying getting this kind of quality meat in Seoul....haha...you won't even come close. This place takes all that is great about our wonderful meats and vegetables here in the US and combines them with the truly authentic Korean preparations. Unreal food combined with a nice smoked flavor "you" will leave you floored and ready to come back for more.

I'm Korean and therefore know how Korean BBQ should taste like and I'll have to state that this is my fav Galbi spot. It's a lil pricey but def worth it. You cook it on real charcoal grills and watch out b/c u might get burned with the BBQ grill right on your table. Bad thing is you end up leaving with all your skin, clothes, and anything else you brought in the restaurant, smelling or I should say wreeking of BBQ'd meats. Sometimes the charcoal smoke may get to you but just change your seat and you should be okay. Place is packed on weekends and during dinner times so prepare to wait a long time. Also the service can be improved.

This place was like all the other korean bbq's.
The service was terrible as well as the ventiliation.
I went for lunch and there was only 2 waitresses that helped out.
They didn't even change the tray.
The meat it ok.
Parks cost 10 dollars more per meat selection but it tastes a lot better.

I've eaten at this korean place many a times and each time I have not been disappointed! The food is definitely finger licking good! You definitely need to make a reservation if you're going to have a party of 6 or more (try to keep it under 10!). If you're a carnivore like me, this is definitely the place for you! I recommend all the marinated dishes, especially the shrimp and squid. You can re-live the experience by sniffing your clothes the next day!

Parking is tough though if the side lot is full cuz you may have to walk several blocks.

Order a #2 and cook away! The campfire smell will be on your clothes for a week - but will only serve to make you crave Soot Bull Jeep again! I enjoy the "activity" of cooking (maybe it satisfies my ADD) and love gettin' all messy with my food (satisfies my innerchild). Bring a date and if they can't handle the atmosphere, they probably aren't worth your time. This is an amazing food "experience", not a fru-fru place.

This restaurant's food is delicious, it's one of the best Korean BBQ I've ever had. But over the past few years, they've gradually increased their prices and decreased their portions. What used to be 1 order of BBQ has now been divided into 2. The servers' English is limited, so be prepared to talk to them like they're still in an ESL class. Be sure to dress casual, because you'll come out smelling like BBQ after being there. Parking is challenging on a busy evening.

Really good food. this is the one place to recommend to friends. Just keep in mind that you are gonna reek of the food b/c it is tableside dining. Price is also pretty competitive for the quantity that you get. The restaurant can get busy so try and avoid the busy times like on Friday night or Saturday night. Going for dinner at around 5:30 should help. As other reviewers will state, this is not a place where you go for a romantic date. This is a place where u do one thing and one thing only, eat meat.

Man, I have eaten a lot of Korean in my time but this takes the cake. The meat is delicious. I would recommend anything on the menu.

Been a few times since just recently moving to K Town. Great place to enjoy the number of korean apps placed before you prior to the main dish and mingle over Sapparo or a Kirin. The short ribs and marinated spicey eel are among my favorite. So much fun to cook your own food over a hot grill and taste different foods with friends and drinks. Try and go either early or late, the wait can be a pain, but so worth it when your sitting down taking your time and some other shmo's are waiting for YOUR table...

Cons: Parking, Smokey

I've taken several out-of-town guests to Soot Bull Jeep, and ALL of them still mention it whenever they discuss their trips. It's a chaotic and crazy dining experience... but in the best way. Just be prepared to shower afterwards, as you WILL smell like camp fire.

If you are looking for a place to simply grub, this is the place. The smoke generated from inside the restaurant is a bit overwhelming at times but the charcoal grill makes the food that much better. Make sure you don't where your favorite clothes and be prepared to eat some meat!!!

PROS: good food, smoke
CONS: parking, smoke

My favorite restaurant in LA by far. Get a doggie bag as it tastes just as good cold. An easy parking remedy is to go 1/2 block north on Catalina and valet at THE PRINCE, a Rat Pack bar from the heyday of the Ambassador Hotel that has been Koreanized.

The food and ambience is reminiscent of a lot of bbq places in korea which could be good or bad depending on what your looking for... but if you are looking to simply grub this is a great place!!! The meat is cooked on top of charcoal pit that causes a lot of smoke so make sure you arent waering your favorite outfit cause it may be hard to get the smell out. Parking is a bit tricky

We went there on a friday night and overall it was OKAY. Getting there was difficult, because Vermont Ave and the surrounding streets were jammed with traffic and the parking lot was already packed by 7:45. After 20 minutes of driving around in the questionable neighborhood surrounding the area I managed to find parking four blocks away. All in all, the food was good, but would I be going back...i think not. There are 437 korean bbq places within 4 blocks...I passed 43 while walking from my car.

Pros: Food

Cons: No Parking, Too Smokey, Service not up to par

This is by FAR the best Korean BBQ I have ever had. The meats are extremely tender and are flavored nicely. The coals add to the flavor. All of the kin chee and vegetable are fresh and flavorful. The service is outstanding. This place seems very suthentic, although I have not been to Korea.

Pros: Inexpensive, Excellent Food

My husband and I went to this restaurant per City Search recommendation. That was my first real Korean BBQ experience and I was hooked. Although almost the entire staff do not speak good English, their service is excellent. Exceptional food quality and great atmosphere! It took us 50 minutes to get a parking space but its well worth it. I recommend this place to anyone who is looking for some serious Korean BBQ experience.

Went there with 8 other guys after a Dodger game and had a great time. It was our first time for Korean food but we got the hang of it pretty fast--especially after a few Hites (beer). The Spencer Steak and the tongue were faves, as well as the chicken. The only negative was that one waitress was a pit pushy and kept throwing more meat on the grill. Now I would understand this if they were busy, but that wasn't the case. A well placed elbow kept her away after that.

It's good. It's good. The Thursday night dinner club came here. The parking is bad, the lines are long, and the tables aren't necessarily comfortable. You do leave with BBQ scent all over your clothes. BUT THE BBQ is GOOD! Tried the spencer steak, the kal bi, and the chicken. All very good. Was served mool kim chee and regular kim chee. The green onion/lettuce salad was a great side that was made better than at most places.

The bbq is excellent, there's no question. It is a pretty intense experience and you will feel pretty well smoked yourself when you come out. That and the sketchy neighborhood, painful parking and long lines cause me to hesitate to recommend SBJ as a place to casually drop by after work. But the bbq is definitely good so if that's all you care about then go for it.

Pros: Great food

The best thing about Soot Bull Jeep is the food. The restaurant is not badly sized, but can get SUPER busy. Parking is limited to a teeny tiny valet, meters and residential street parking. The minute you step through the doors, all you smell is Galbi. The meat is a "cook it yourself".

they would recommend only Soot Bull Jeep for Korean BBQ. Food is very nicely marinated. The charcoal grill brings out all the flavors. The restaurant is not meant to attract people looking for a romantic atmosphere, but if you want the best Korean BBQ, this is it!!

One of the best korean bbq joints in ktown. Must try the Kalbi! Word of warning...the scents are so engulfing inside...you'll walk out smelling like kalbi yourself!

Soot Bull Jeep was my first introduction to Korean barbecue and I was impressed. Although my clothes still smell like I went on a camping trip, the grilled beef, ribs and shrimp were incredibly good. It was fun to play with the food on the grill and the waitress helped us out at times. I don't know what most of the side dishes were. Some tasted good and some I didn't like, but I've still never really learned to appreciate pickled cabbage in any form. I will definitely go back again soon to try some other meats.

Though I'm not exactly sure where "there" is, since I've never actually been to Korea, I have to imagine that this is what it's like. It's fun because you get to cook your own food, right at your table, the whole place smells like cooked meat, they have 20 ounce beers and the waitresses are friendly.

Editorial from

Of the hundreds of Korean barbecue restaurants in L.A., this is one of the best. It's smoky and noisy, but you'll enjoy barbecuing your own dinner over the charcoal grill in the middle of your table. Cook short ribs, pork loin, baby…
