Good.

by Amanda P. | insider_expert Insider Expert | Rank: 6,106

The food was pretty good. Not the best, but I only had a burger for a meal. I would go again to try something new, and it's a very nice restaurant. The pies were delicious!

The deli is ok

by Pamela H. | insider Insider | Rank: 27,114

I thought the City Deli was ok. I think there are other deli's in San Diego that are far superior. The food is overpriced for the amout that you receive and the taste is average. It has good atmosphere but the food isn't to die for.

Great cakes

by Sophia M. | insider_expert Insider Expert | Rank: 4,069

I have only been here once for a meal, but have picked up several cakes for various parties and social functions. They make the most amazing carrot cake. Parking can be tough, since Hillcrest is such a popular neighborhood. My friend LOVES the meatloaf at this place. Me, I go for the cakes!

Mmmmm... sandwiches...

by Matthew B. | insider_expert Insider Expert | Rank: 3,368

Need some good pastrami? City Deli is the place. Located in the center of Hillcrest, they are open exceptionally late at night (midnight most days, 2AM on weekends), serve breakfast anytime, have a fun (if fickle) jukebox, and make one of the best corned-beef sandwiches this side of Manhattan. Not the cheapest place in town, it certainly is worth it. And most importantly, they validate parking at a nearby lot (since parking in Hillcrest is impossible).
