I have tried so many times to like this place- I really have. They just make it too hard. First of all, I have called to place an order only to have the person who answered the phone tell me to hold on because they don't have a pen, then they put the phone down and start talking joking around and shootin the breeze telling other workers there what there date was like the night before- all while I'm waiting to place an order. Not professioanl at all. The ribs (beef) could have been called vegeterian they so badly lacked meat. The links were ok. Their potato salad has tasted different everytime and the best time was the first, sadly it's gone more and more downhill each time. Big time lack of consistancy. The cornbread was so greasy and didn't have a great flavor to it. The other sides that we've tried were ok. Just ok. I really wanted this place to be good because there really are not many good bbq spots in the valley. Still aren't. I would say take a drive to Santa Clarita- a new place called the Q-Spot just opened and they are worth the drive any day!

Pros: The owner (Oscar) is very nice.

Cons: Sadly, pretty much everything else.

Well we never really got to eat there.. The place was supposed to open at 11 on (Busy Friday) and when I arrived at 11:20, the doors were locked and some lady comes out from the back telling me she will talk to the owner because I parked too close to HIS car. We proceed to go to an adjacent restaurant and I noticed 3 people standing near my vehicle so I stepped outside and asked if everything was okay. The cook proceeded to tell me I scratched his car and his justification was "A black man always knows when somethin happens to his cah... it was YOU". Was the crazy lady who ratted me out for parking too close to the cook's caddy hired to patrol the parking lot for some free food or, perhaps, crack rock??? It appears so. I took my money elswhere. Note** If you DO decide to go there and pay $11.00 for a sandwich, make sure you STAY AWAY from the caddy parked in the lot because that crazy hag meant business

It used to be great BBQ but as of late all we have gotten was fatty ribs and a bigger bill. I dont think they are taking their old time customers seriously.

Pros: Its the closest BBQ to the Warner Center and they deliver.

Cons: No Pork, are you serious? Prices have been up

Being in the Valley and (sometimes) too far away from Phil's in San Diego, Grandpa Fred's BBQ is top-notch when it comes to BBQ. Having to go there at least once a week, I'm a big fan of their short rib sandwiches. I have also tried their NY Strip sandwiches, along with the brisket when they run out of short rib. The cornbread is what cornbread should taste like, and you really can't go wrong with their sides. The mac and cheese ain't from any box, and the fried okra is wonderful. The collard greens have a little heat to them which makes it nice. Speaking of which, they can change the heat levels of your BBQ, and if the hottest version of the sauce isn't enough, they have their wall of hot sauces for you to choose from. If it's too hot, you can cool down with a nice drinking jar of sweet tea. The gumbo, which is only served on Fridays, is authentic "Naw'leans" style, and the catfish...oh, the catfish!...is nothing short of awesome!

The only drawback, and it's not a fault of Grandpa Fred's own, is the location. Being right next to a karate dojo, finding parking can be tough. However, this is never a problem for me, and trust me, once you're done with your meal, you will want to go for a walk anyway!

But that aside, the best thing about Grandpa Fred's are the people who work there. The cousin of the owner is a very wonderful woman, and will make you feel at home. She was even nice enough to tell us the secret of how the catfish is prepared! I highly recommend Grandpa Fred's BBQ, and I will definately find myself there often!

Cons: Parking can be tough to find.

I had been passing by Grandpa Fred's BBQ on Victory for a while without stopping in (mostly out of fear from so many previous bad BBQ experiences in the Valley). One day I had a hankerin' for some Que and just was't up to the drive to Phillip's on Lemert & 43rd, so I stopped in. To my suprise I was greeted by Black Folks cookin' Collard greens, Fried Okra, and real Hot links in Woodland Hills. I got to pick Sweet Tea as my drink, eventhough they had 5 flavors of diet pop on tap. My one dissapoint ment was that they had no pork the owner is 7th day Adventist, but the beef ribs were fallin' off the bone, and Greens came w/ cornbread as one of my two sides. My other side was the Okra (I couldn't resist). Everything was excellent, the servers were polite and attentive, and the day I was there Saturday they have karaoke and half of the staff sings too. There were two boys singing a Ricky Martin song (it was the cutest thing). Anyway I thoroughly enjoyed everything and look forward to next Saturday (I think I'll have the Catfish)
