I had Wooden Duck create some custom chairs for me. Over the years, my dining room set had become rather battered, and while the table still looked okay, the chairs were abysmal. (Knocked down by the children too many times, I think.) I had some very specific guidelines that I wanted them to follow, and they did to a T. If I didn't know better, I'd think they gave me the exact same set I bought fifteen years ago! I'm very impressed with their work, their attention to detail, and fantastic customer service!

Bought a beautiful French lacquered table, paid $70 for delivery and it arrived with an ugly split between two of the tabletop boards. The delivery company blamed WD, and WD blamed the delivery company. WD insisted that I pay $70 to have the delivery company swap out the table for an undamaged one! They in essence blamed me for the split, not their craftsmanship, making me pay for their mistake. A $1k table should survive a delivery, and if not, WD should make it right. They didn't. Exercise caution when working with them and their delivery service. You might just get stuck in the middle with no recourse.

Pros: Recycled sourcing and beautiful pieces

Cons: Don't stand by their woodwork; questionnable quality; poor service if you discover a defect

.

In a cookie cutter world of SKU #'s and mass produced furniture, the Wooden Duck stands out like a sore thumb. Every piece is a little different, every piece of wood has it's own story. If you hit it right, you'll be sad you don't have a bigger house to put all this wonderful stuff in.

(From the Wooden Duck)
We have been making furniture from recycled wood/ reclaimed lumber since 1995 and are proud to be the largest recycled wood furniture company in California. Our factory in Berkeley has produced some of the showcases pieces in restaurants and wineries around Northern California and our factory in Java has been producing a line from recycled teak for nearly 17 years straight. Come check out our stores in Berkeley and Marin. Check out our website for more details.

The Wooden Duck is one of those bay-area institutions thats worth visiting even if you never thought of buying teak . This isnt the flimsy teak stuff you see at Cost-Plus World Market or Pier One - this is the real thing.

Much of their wood comes from old houses that are being torn down, in places like Cambodia and Thailand where Teak was the main building material for centuries. Teak has two great qualities: its water resistant, and it has a nice dark color.

They have some nice Adirondac chairs, picnic benches etc. Their teak bookcases seem to be a bit large for most apartments or small houses, but it looks real nice in a craftsman style house.

The main thing to do is to not just look for a style, but look for the individual piece. Since much of it is recycled wood, not every piece is identical.

I recommend going there, sign up for their mailing lists and take advantage of their annual sales.

PROS: Beautiful Teak Furniture at reasonable prices
CONS: Not everyones cup of tea

I can't tell you how long I've looked for a cool coffee table with character to replace my Ikea soul-less blob... When I walked into the Wooden Duck it was love at first sight. I wanted everything but managed to escape with just a coffee table and matching side table. The people there are really laid back and helpful.

Pros: selection, quality, stock on hand

Cons: only one location, no web orders

.

The Wooden Duck is a cool furniture store because they make everything from recycled wood, very nice for the environmentally conscious (and those who like furniture with character/a story to tell!). They have a good selection of furniture, roughly half indoor and half patio furniture. Their designs generally have a sturdy, rustic feel.

These guys sell a ton of tables. I think all the restaurants in the East Bay go to them to make tables. We brought in our chairs (from Pottery Barn) and they matched the color for our table. It took 8 weeks (they quoted 6) but it's solid and we love it!

Pros: quality, not a chain, recycled wood

Cons: , not cheap, hours only till 6

I've driven by The Wooden Duck a thousand times as it's right of the Ashby exit but never really had the desire to go inside until I saw a friend's table at a dinner party. When you do go inside it's a little overwhelming as it's WOOD everywhere. We were going to have a table made but ended up finding one off the floor (they had about 50 in stock) for a cheaper price. We love our table and since we now have ours can now let the secret out!

Cons: , not bargain basement, delivery isn't free

They do what they say.... Not a chain with a bunch of clueless workers... You talk to the people and they give you a straight answer. They made a beautiful table for us... Highly recomended!
