I just had my daughter's birthday party at Prehistoric Pet's Reptile Zoo and it was exceptional! Our party host, Savannah made sure that all of the kids in attendance got to share in the fun, even the ones that were a bit shy or nervous about the animals at first.

Every parent there got information about how to book their next party, and if that wasn't enough, we all got to roam throughout the zoo and behold all the interesting animals. The staff was very attentive and catered to all of our needs swiftly.

We learned so much and my daughter has found a new role model in Savannah, she begs me to go and see her daily. Good thing we live close!

Thank you to Prehistoric Pets for all you do for everyone in our community, and thanks for giving my daughter the best Jurassic Party ever. See you again soon.

Horrible! The most amazing thing about our experience was this blond woman doing the photos who was supposed to be "an expert", and was the most ill informed person regarding reptiles and their care I have ever met! She flung the snakes around like they were ropes, and had a severely dehydrated Crested gecko that was being passed around to children to man handle. We were told by another employee that "unfortunately the animals used for photos and parties are used, and reused until they die, then they are replaced by a new batch"... This place is a disgrace and should be closed. (We also learned that large numbers of store animals go into the freezer each week because the owner cant afford to have them treated), the freezer is allegedly full of dead reptiles.

Okay, so here's the deal (as I had suspected earlier):

If you're looking to shop, either do your research beforehand, call ahead, or don't bother. Look, approximately 1/4 of the store is available to anyone to just walk in and browse. Don't like what you see? Just leave. Don't complain.

If you're just looking for that unique experience and to have fun looking at these great creatures (particularly if you have kids), by all means drop by. Again, 1/4 of the store is open free of charge, and if you don't like what you see, then just turn around and go to the beach 10 minutes away. Otherwise, enjoy it! The creatures are awesome, and it's a very hands-on experience! Feed the turtles, hold a snake, take a picture with a BIG snake - by all means, enjoy! Also, if you're thinking of perhaps getting some sort of reptile, it's a good place to go and be able to check them out, and find out what would be right for you. And if you think $5 is steep, just head on down to the San Diego Zoo (though you'll likely spend more at the Starbucks just down the street). Remember, a thousand animals cost a lot to feed - not to mention the employees need pay, too. Remember, it's a business, and as a business they are doing only what's smart to make a profit without ripping you off.

First, It smells like the reptile house at the zoo. This is due in large part to the hundreds of reptiles living there. Second, you do not have to pay to shop as others have claimed. You only have to pay to visit their private collection, well worth the $5 if you have never been. I am told that the place use to allow free admission, but after dealing with parents who would drop their kids while shopping elsewhere, and throngs of kids from "home school" groups, and on "field trips" traipsing through nearly every day, the management needed to do something. So if you do not want to buy anything and still want to view the collection, it is 5 bucks? cheaper than a trip to the zoo, and you won??t be bothered by all the pesky birds, mammals and other non-reptiles that the zoos have. This is a great place to purchase or just browse the many species on display that are for sale.
Pros: Huge Collection
Cons: $5... deal with it -or buy something

New to the area and was very excited to check out investing in several new species for my existing collection, unfortunately you aren??t even able to view their collection without paying a $5 dollar donation or making an $8 purchase! You are however able to view their overcrowded, unhealthy looking collection of turtles, tortoises and large snakes. The staff unfortunately was also very unhelpful and just plain rude. I felt asking questions was a waste of their time, when I attempted to talk with them they couldn??t give me any legitimate answers and wouldn??t even make eye contact. Sadly they probably turn many new enthusiasts away when they have an opportunity and obviously the resources to educate. Sadly I wouldn??t even consider adding one of their reptiles to my collection, in fear of infecting my animals.

I haven't been to the store yet because I live in Maryland but I am planning on going in the summer. I do have a few comments on the comments left. I manage a pet store and no matter how much you clean there's always a seem because of all the pets. Stores like the one I manage and the reptile zoo have more animals then anything else. Animals tend to have an odor. About the guy tryin to return a set-up. After it is open even if it was only for one day it can't be resold as new. Why should the store take the lose because of your mistakes!?! I wouldn't have gave you your money back either. I'm hoping when I go there that I wont be disappointed and the animals are taken care of because I won't think twice about calling up on the if they aren't. I had to comment on some of the comments.

I have been there many times through the years that Prehistoric Pets has been in Fountain Valley... I was there in May and it was FANTASTIC! The new animals and cages in progress were better than many "real" zoo's ! The were asking for $5 per non-customer and FREE admission to customers who bought $8 or more... to view there exotic and amazing collection, talk with you and show you any of their amazing and extensive collection of snakes, lizards, geckos, chameleons, fish, tarantulas, iguanas, gosh, I know I am forgetting some critters... but WOW ! Biggest, smallest, weirdest and most beautiful collection of reptiles + I have ever seen in 1 place. Their animals do not feed them selves! They are well within their right to ask for a small donation! The information given by their staff and ability to HANDLE all these makes it a CHEAP !!!

By far the largest reptile shop and the largest selection of reptiles I've seen. Very interesting place to go to but definitely on the expensive side compared to other reptile shops (and I'm not comparing to PetSmart or Petco because those aren't reptile shops by any means). With the exception of one blond air-head with a pink streak in her hair, the staff is helpful. I do however question certain employees' honesty. The only animals i noticed as being in poor condition are the turtles in the pond next to the main entrance. Other then that, the hundreds of other animals they have are in fair condition. The animals enclosures are small. The main thing I find OUTRAGEOUS is the fact that they charge $8 to enter. You have to pay to browse their merchandise!!?? After going there for years and weekly buying food and supplies there, the fee to enter was a slap in the face. And if they're going to make money off viewing the animals as a zoo then they should pay their zoo license fees and stop trying to evade the law. If your complaining about the smell then you've obviously never been to reptile shops before (rodents and crickets smell no matter how clean you keep them).

I think the store is an awesome place to check out a large variety of reptiles. I am a hard-core herp and LOVE reptiles. Looking at the animals they seem to be in decent health, yet I never looked too hard at their health.

The habbitat sizes are a little small, but the animals are for sale and aren't in permanent housing. Unfortunately their LARGE snakes definitely should have more room!!!

Their specialty is with Reticulated pythons are their store is recognized as bringing about many new phases "color patterns" in this species. I bought a retic myself 18 months ago. He seemed in great health but after having him for a weeek I noticed that he had an internal parasite! *Sometimes these guys are hard to notice, but it was there. I wasn't able to bring it back because I lived 20 minutes away, but he was doing very well until I sold him.

I've visited the store a few times, yet I had never tried to speak with the employees to gain their knowledge, I know too much myself.

-BRANDI S.- I'm not too sure what you're talking about when you say you had to pay $8 just to go inside. They may have been having an event.

Whenever you want to buy a pet, reptile, bird, fish, cat, dog, PLEASE do your research!!
Buy a book, or even go to a PetCo and pick up one of their Companion Animal "Care Sheets".
It's very important to know what the pet you want needs to live a happy and healthy life.
NEVER own a pet at the bare minimum of a cage and water. That's like taking an animal from the Million dollar home where their pampered "Pet Store" and taking them home to the slums!!

-Pet lover and soon to be a degree holder in Biology Pre-vet and later my own Pet Store Owner!

I went to the store, had to pay $8 for each person to get in JUST TO LOOK!! We went in, there were 3 or 4 tanks with dead lizards in them and one enclosure was collapsing into the enclosure under it. I was looking for a specific lizard and they didn't have it [they didn't tell me before i went in either] and when i got inside, i asked about another lizard and they told me it would be just as easy to tame--turns out no, but they got me---made their sale! I'm very disappointed.

As an animal lover and turtle owner, I was very excited to check out "Prehistoric Pets". The facility does have a large number of reptiles, amphibians, etc. However it is immediately apparent that the animals are in poor to bad condition and living in sub-standard environments. The poor turtles had no UVA/UVB lighting (which they need at least 8 hours of daily), some of them were completely soaked with no area to bask, many of them had fungal infections and open sores. Some of their eyes were so infected that they were closed shut. The poor turtles were swimming around blind! One turtle in the back seemed to be dead. The employee I spoke with was clueless and rude, attributing the obvious diseases to the weather! Take your business to a reputable breeder or rescue!!!

I will never go back to this place, it is like a horrible prison camp for Herps. The cages are all way to small, the animals all look neglected. It is filthy smelly over crowded. The workers have no clue about the animals they sell, the live food, worms crickets etc., are even neglected. The employees are rude and do not seem to care about the animals at all.

I have gone to this place a few times to see what they had in stock. I am a reptile breeder and very aware of reptile and amphibian care requirements. The last time I went there, around 2 months ago, the cages where disgusting and most of the lizards very skinny. They had a 4 foot iguana in a tiny cage, it couldn't even turn around. Quite a few snakes and lizards had visible mites, mouth rot, and some toads had the dreaded fungus growing on them which was eating away their skin. I informed the manager about the toads and he just shrugged. This place makes me so sad. I wish they would at least feed the animals and give them a clean cage. Avoid this place if you plan to buy, or if you care about reptiles well being.

I read the book and quickly realized that I didn't have the time to properly care for the snake as I am an animal lover. My family picked up the snake on X-Mas Eve --- I returned the snake on Dec. 26. The first thing the owner said was, "the cage is dirty --- its used." I showed him the receipt that my family had just picked it up on X-Mas Eve --- the snake had not eaten yet! They ended up refusing to refund my money and would only issue me store credit after much protest. A terrible place to do business with --- not a reputable return policy!!!

The place is great. Wide selection with lots of animals to come look at and buy. The smell is tolerable (although the fish pond is filthy) and the prices decent but the staff isn't that knowledgeable. The staff is either rude or just answers questions without really knowing and if you call them on it they get really condescending. But I am not there to chat up the staff so by inventory standards they rock. I bring my nephew just to browse the big snakes and lizards. Just remember if you have something important you need answered, go/call somewhere else. As one staff member told me today, "Just because they sell pets doesn't mean they're experts."

Okay, when I think of this place I immediately think of how bad it smells when you first walk in. Other than that, they have a huge selection of reptiles to either look at or buy. I bought a chameleon there. They had a cage full of baby chameleons and they were too cute to pass up.

They also do parties and stuff for kids. Looks like fun, if you're not afraid of big snakes.

I recently got the chance to head out to Orange County and browse through this establishment. Given the array of specimens they boast, I was excited until I walked inside. First, the place smelled like an unclean fish bowl, and animal feces. There were quite a few abnormalities on their animals, including an abscess on a striped African Rock python's head, one eyed Brooks King snake, and a Burmese with a full blown case of mouth rot. The bedding in each cage looked like the animals had defecated, and rather than replace the bark, the feces had been picked out repeatedly, leaving contaminated bedding to grow bacteria. A male associate was dragging a water monitor into the back room for a temporary relocation, and when the monitor flicked his tongue out, the associate grabbed it teasing the animal and asking "do you want it back." And a female associate showed us their "Ghost" Honduran milk snake, that was plainly an Anerythistic specimen with heavy solid black bands and tipping. IMHO, this store is built on shock factor, and is a circus for the average person. If you know a lot about reptiles and their proper care requirements, plan on being thoroughly repulsed. They take great pictures though.

If you like mites, starving, sickly and skinny animals, this your place! Do not go here or support this business! If you do, you support animal abuse!

Okay, so it's hard to rank as "good" a place that totally creeps me out. However, if you dig "prehistoric" pets like pythons, lizards, turtles and their ilk, you will be thrilled with this shop.

It's unbelievable, and I do not say that lightly. You can get any supplies you need for your fuzzy little friends... and your pet that eats said fuzzies. Blech.

In case you haven't guessed by my description or their name, they specialize in reptiles. Lots of them. Even if you don't want to buy one, you have to go if only just to witness this place.

PROS: Reptiles of all shapes and sizes
CONS: Reptiles of all shapes and sizes

My son wanted a reptile as a pet. So, we went to prehistoric pets in Fountain Valley! We found a menagerie of reptiles!! The store itself has a pond inside, so the customers can view the fish up close. The clerk who helped choose a pet for my son was very knowledgable!! I had to ask a few questions before I decided which reptile would best suit our needs. The store is very clean and does not smell.

This store isn't your ordinary pet store. They have different ones like the bearded dragon and huge lizards. Its' a great place to take your kids . They even do party events.

This is the greatest place to walk around...so fun. You can feed the big turtles and there are just thousands of snakes and other reptiles to look at. Some of the hugest reptiles I have ever seen... My kids love this place. They bring the reptiles to your house for a party-we attended one once at it was great. Thumbs up!

I came to this place once to get some pet supplies and I have to admit that the staff was very friendly. They have an array of products to choose from. I usually go to a couple different pet stores but this store has the best prices. The location is in a newer shopping center and has lots of parking. I always find new accessories to choose from when shopping for toys for my parrot. Very modern and clean interior too.

A great place for a kids party. When they break out the tarantula or the albino python, your children will have a memory for the ages. The staff is knowledgeable and friendly, and it is reptile heaven.

A great place for all your reptile needs. Plus they do great birthday parties. This place is a store but it is set up like a mini reptile zoo. They have a huge monitor lizard that wanders loose in the store. My kids LOVE this place.
