While In-Shape talks of providing improvements to this club, they are more talk than action. This club was founded and is anchored by the tennis players. In-Shape does not understand the needs of tennis players. Lights on the courts go out and are not fixed for weeks. Lens are not cleaned and are filled with bugs, reflecting light and creating dim spots on the courts. Tennis pro shop and restaurant have been removed. Experienced tennis pros were let go or not offered enough to make a living, replaced by development level USPTA "pros". Courts in the back have algae growing on the surface from the winter rain. "New Lockers" were ordered 2 months ago and have sat in the middle of the clubhouse and have not been installed. All I can say is, "Don't sign a contract or join here." Go to one of the other clubs in town and pay a little more for a much better experience.

In-Shape has a fantastic tennis camp for kids this summer. My kids love the tennis camp. The staff is wonderful, my kids have learned so much and they are keeping active and making new friends. I would highly recommend this camp for any parent looking for something fun for their child to do this summer.

Beware if you are considering joining or renewing an existing contract. In-Shape has filed for a zone change for this property. Their claim is that the current property configuration exhibits an inefficient use of land and is costly to maintain. They are proposing to replace the existing facility with 104 2-story 900-1200sf units. The gpa/zone change (GPA/ZC 07-1778) has been filed with the city of Bakersfield. There will be a public hearing for this on March 20, 2008 at 5:30 p.m. at City Hall, 1501 Truxtun Avenue, Bakersfield, California in the City Council Chambers.
By the way, In-Shape has not been straight forward with their many (approx. 600) members about this. This is the way that they treat their customers. I can't speak for the other In-Shape health clubs in town, but many Laurelglen members have not been treated very well since In-Shape became the new owners in July of 2007.
Be very careful when dealing with In-Shape as they have proved to be deceitful and not a positive community partner.

Laurel Glen is a great tennis club and have really great tennis programs. It's new owners are so nice and they are already make improvements and adding more equipment and amenities. The are putting in one of those 30 minute circuit training facilities and I can't wait to try it out.

Laurelglen Tennis Club is a great alternative to national chain gyms. They offer a great fitness club facility plus amazing tennis courts and instruction for children and adults in primarily tennis but also many other athletic activities. Their employees take pride in their club and their instructors are great, especially with children. They make lessons fun! Whatever your athletic endeavor, Laurelglen is a community club with a family feel that will make your workout time something to look forward to. Another item worth mentioning is the cleanliness of their facility--you can tell they really take pride in maintaining their equipment and keeping it clean for the enjoyment and health of their members.

This is a very nice tennis club. They have tennis courts that are very well taken care of. All of the members are very nice people who are easy to get along with. They also have a nice little store in here.

This is a good place to go for tennis lessons or just to have fun playing tennis. They also have a gym and a swimming pool. They even hold swimming lessons here as well. They keep this place very nice looking and it is a very respectable club amongst the tennis community.
