The Scene
Two island bars run the length of this high-ceilinged space, separated by a narrow walkway. After-work dates sit at stools lining either bars and larger parties take refuge at bordering tables and wooden booths. The weathered-wood floors and old-time art--black-and-white photos, colorful paintings of yesteryear's sport heroes--give the place a vintage vibe. TVs flashing ESPN keep things current.

The Draw
Royal Exchange sits on prime real estate. It's a popular lunch spot, as well as post-work drink destination for predominately 30-something white-collar-types. A long line of taps highlight more than 30 draft beers, including microbrew specialties like Drop Top ale. Tickertape-shaped menus hang from corners of the island bars and are divided into stockbroker-themed sections (Blue Chip Burgers, Hot Prospects, Greenbacks). The mammoth Royal Mushroom Burger is served on a soft French roll and presents a savory challenge to finish in one sitting.

Key Points

  • Great for Sporting Events
  • THE spot in the Financial!
  • Irish sports bar

The Inside Scoop

  1. Where to Sit - Beneath exposed-brick walls, a handful of booths in the back offer the most secluded seating in the joint. Don't try to squeeze more than two people into the tiny booths on the north side of the bar.
  2. Parking - Metered spaces often become available in the early evening. Otherwise, the Embarcadero lot is located across the street (Front and Sacramento Street).
  3. When to Go - Royal Exchange is open Mon-Fri, and reserved for private parties on weekends.
  4. Know Before You Go - The bar often closes early on slower nights.

Delicious food

by Carol L. | insider_expert Insider Expert | Rank: 5,752

The Royal Exchange is one of a number of Old style pubs that are found in the financial district. The Royal Exchange isnt my favorite (I prefer Harringtons) but I still go there and I still enjoy it. The Royal Exchange also features the Royal Express, which is a quick and convenient take out window. Id definitely recommend this place.

Good times!

by Doubledown

A great bar in the financial district. I have a great time every time I am there... lots of bars nearby.

Pros: Example: best croissants in town

Cons: What are the drawbacks?

Remember ! ! ! Its ROYAL .....

by staya

Royal Exchange is open Mon-Fri, and reserved for private parties on weekends and often closes early on slower nights. This place is great to stop in for a burger and a beer for lunch. if you are going after work for happy hour, prepare to stand or get their early to secure a table. Ladies, tis true...there are way more men in here than there are women. However, it is a fine place to have a burger at lunch during the week.

Fun place after long day at work

by GGupta

Now, I am a huge fan of pies and beer. A winning combination at any price range! They have a wide variety of beers. The pies are also spectacular... they really do it right.

Mostly professionals after work come here, so they mostly interact amongst themselves, but you can built camraderie when good games are on TV.

Best Burger Around

by roxxy

This place is great to stop in for a burger and a beer for lunch! The meat was perfectly cooked, the bun was not your usual run-of-the-mill sesame, and the fries were perfectly done! I love the huge selection of beers, and the service was great.
I'll have to check it out for the after-work crowd.

Pros: Burgers, Beer Selection, Location

Cons: Busy, Pricey, Parking

Sardine City

by lkcoops

The last place I want to be Friday after work is a bar crammed with people, at least a 20 minute wait for a beer and hot, stale air. There is nothing calming and relaxing about this place. If you enjoy re-living frat parties from your college days then this is the place for you. For those of us who have grown-up since college there are plenty of other bars in the area. However, it is a fine place to have a burger at lunch during the week.

Pros: Good for Lunch

Cons: Stale air, long wait, loud

Crowded!

by shoegal84

This place is crowded at all times. Whether you go in for lunch, or after work for happy hour. However, it is worth it. The chili is delicous, they make a decent burger and beef dip, and the grilled flat iron steak is yummy!

Prepare to wait a bit, and if you are going after work for happy hour, prepare to stand or get their early to secure a table. Ladies, tis true...there are way more men in here than there are women (and boy do they have egos!). Still fun, but I never stay here for more than an hour or so...you must move on.

Pros: Food, bartenders are super friendly

Cons: Way too crowded sometimes

Classic Happy Hour Spot!

by ukgrad04

I've been to the Royal Exchange several times. I always have a great time. It's a great place to meet new people. The apps are pretty good and the bartenders are always friendly. It gets packed on Fridays, so you might want to go early to get a table. There's a really high guy-girl ratio, so, if you're a single woman looking for your mr. right or right now, you might want to check it out.

Pros: Good drinks. Great service. Good food.

Cons: Parking, but take MUNI.

Overpriced boring financial district spot

by colu

Your typical array of meathead jocks and their hangers on congregate here after work to booze and mingle. BORING! On top of the mindless clientele, the drinks are overpriced and the service is way below average, but they remain entitled and snotty. Overall, I would say don't waste your time on this one and try somewhwere else.

Cons: Overpriced, bad service and below average pub food

Good for Post-work

by mark

Royal Exchange is a top spot to meet friends after work for a beer or cocktail. Friendly staff and group of people where you can talk/hear friends and meet new people as well. Royal Exchange has been a staple in my groups social circle for many years.

Perfect after-work place

by tauro

There are other bars right next to it like Schroeder's but Royal Exchange is a bit more casual, better lighting, better to watch sports, and has the more traditional pub food fare. The crowd seems to be a bit younger and the atmostphere is better to meet people.
