My son came home from a friend's house raving about the Boston Creme Pie he had. After some investigation, I found out that the pie had come from French's Bakery on Culver and Walnut. I tucked that information away for a later date.

When it was time for a major family celebration with 15 of our closest friends and family members, I remembered that pie and decided to order it. I called the bakery the day before the event. They assured me that there was plenty of time to get the pies. I ordered 2 pies with a messaged piped on each. I told them that I would be there after 2pm to pick them up. When I arrived at 3pm, the pies were ready but the messages were not piped on them. We waited for the pies to be finished and did not see them before they were placed in the boxes. I was in a hurry so didn't even think about checking the piping before leaving the shop. When we took the pies out of the box, I was very disappointed to see that the piping/writing was horrible. It looked like something that a child would do. Thank goodness that we could make a joke about it and laugh at the work and not a real formal event that appearances count because I would have been crushed. I can't tell you how it tasted because the horrible piping left such a bitter taste in my mouth that I don't remember the pie itself.

When I returned to the shop two days later with a picture of the piping, I asked if this was considered acceptable work. I was told by the manager who had done the piping that it was a complimentary service and she had run out of room. She said that the bakers hadn't done it so she had to. She shrugged it off and didn't seem to care that she had seriously disappointed a customer.

Bottom line: good products if you don't care how they look and can roll with the punches or results.

Pros: decent baked goods

Cons: customer service, cake decorating

I just wrote a review and I noticed that 33% of the 6 reviews written were one star. That is because the same person wrote both reviews. So to compensate I thought I should submit two reviews also. Thanks
This is the best bakery in town. I go there every time we have friends and family over and need a cake and / or French and Italian breads or pastries. I wish they would offer some good espresso like "Diedrich Coffee"

I HATE French's Bakery -- the owner Marianna (sp?) is VERY unprofessional!!! (And I've used this bakery before - it's sad that they treat their good customers so poorly!!!) They cancelled my cookie order I had placed less then 48 hours before my son's 1st b-day party!!! I was in a panic to find another bakery and found French's Cupcakes in Costa Mesa which is AWESOME and highly recommended!!!!!"

I spent an hour printing up pictures of my daughter's favorite computer game, my wife's sister took the pictures in and gave them specific instructions. She dropped the order off at noon Thursday for a Friday evening party. A low-level clerk called Friday at noon and said, "We're really sorry, but your order was put in the wrong place, and we don't have any decorators here today, so we can't do your cake."

We begged them to do something but they were not willing to assist in any way. We found a place that could do it and went there.

We, and family members have had at least 50 cakes made over the years. This was unacceptable and just a little bit cruel. Why couldn't they have sent our order out to another bakery?

DON'T USE THIS PLACE!

After years of having all our custom cakes made here (along with family and friends all using the place at our recommendation), we had the most unimaginable experience here. So bad, that I feel a need to complain publicly and warn others, which is not exactly my style.

My daughter had her 6th birthday party yesterday, it was her first real birthday party. Her favorite thing in the world is toontown dot com, and she has been begging for a toontown birthday for months. So, we had ordered the Disney bounce house, a Minnie character to show up, we'd printed pictures for decorations, and purchased as many appropriate accoutrements as possible.

I printed up several pictures of toontown from the computer and gave them to my wife's sister, who dropped them off at French's, along with specific instructions for the cake, on Thursday at noon. The party was scheduled for Friday at 4:00. They said there would be no problems accommodating the order.

However, Friday morning at 11:00 am, we receive a call from French's. It wasn't the owner or manager calling, it was a low-level clerk. She said, "We are really sorry, but your order got hung up in the wrong place and we didn't see it until now. We don't have any decorators today, so we can't make your cake." I was speechless. I gave the phone to my wife, who spent a half hour on the phone with the clerk, and the manager, begging them to do something to assist us, but they absolutely refused. Even after she called around and found a bakery that would do the rush order, they were not even willing to deliver the pictures to the other bakery.

The bakery which filled our order is French's Cupcake Bakery on 17th in Costa Mesa. They are not affiliated with French's in Irvine. They were very friendly, they made a perfect cake, and it was less expensive!

If it were my bakery, I would have simply sent the order out and told the customer there was nothing to worry about. Seems like a no-brainer.

Absolutely wonderful whipped cream cakes. Staff willing to work with you to personalize and customize cakes. Prices reasonable. Very worth the trip - our favorite bakery without a doubt. Only problem is the parking lot is very congested. Try to go mid weekday.

French's Bakery is the place where I always go when I need something fabulous to bring to a dinner party at the last minute. They have a nice selection of fresh bread to choose from. Their desserts are mouth-watering to look at and taste just as good. One of my favorite things to get is a breakfast pastry. They don't have a huge selection of baked goods, but everything that they offer is delicious.
