Kumon was started 50 years ago in Japan by Toru Kumon, a teacher and parent who wanted to help his son do better in school. The unique instructional method he created was so successful that his son was able to do calculus by the time he was in the sixth grade. Kumon reading and math programs help children master those fundamental skills so important to their overall academic performance. Our founder's belief that every child possesses untapped abilities and the potential to excel remains central to our philosophy. In short, there is nothing a child can't do. The Kumon Method was developed to unlock the potential in every child. That's our mission, and we are accomplishing it every day at more than 1,500 Kumon Centers in North America alone.

Kumon has been a great educational supplement for our children. All three of them have been able to consistently perform at advanced levels 2-3 years above their current grade. The staff, a few adults but mostly high school and college students, is helpful but not necessarily 'friendly'. I have noticed many of the children appear to be afraid to ask for help. The program requires parent involvement as you have to supervise completion of their daily work and check it for errors. On the lower levels, this is made easier by answer key but, they don't have answer books for the more advanced levels. You have to really pay attention to their progress though. I found that, on certain levels, there tends to be an inordinate amount of time where it seems no advancement is being made. The place can get pretty crowded and sometimes it takes a while for them to check their classwork so you'll need some patience.
